i think i would rather see the cubs go after catalanotto. he can spell murton, lee and (hopefully!) aram along with pinch hitting.

For the bench, what the hell? Why not start him at 2nd base?

He batted .296/.357/.456 with 13 homers and 74 rbis.

.348 BABIP and a .273/.331/.404 career line

fluke season

I didn't know that. Should have looked at the stats throughout the years.

If you can spell catalanotto then you're not going to have a problem spelling murton, lee, aram, or pinch hitting now are you?

Article also says that Hendry wants Pierre back.

(Throwing up noise in the backround)

That's not going to happen. He knows what Pierre is going to want, and he also knows the Cubs have more holes then Natalie Maines (of the Dixie Chicks) have working brain cells. Even Hendry knows he can't afford to give Pierre "Furcal contract", when everybody with a brain cell knows, Pierre ain't worth much more the utlity man money.

Tony Graffanino is another attractive bench option. He can play all the IF positions (including 1B in a pinch), I believe he can even be an emergency 3rd catcher.

With Dusty gone, I can think of worse options than Mark Bellhorn as a reserve infielder. At least he can get on base and hit the occasional longball.

I do not care to see Freddie Bynum return for the bench, please, no. I also see no reason to have Ronny Cedeno in that role, either trade him or put him at Iowa to refine his game.

If the Cubs get a legit 2B or SS, I wouldn't mind keeping Izturis as an expensive reserve IF.

And of course, if the Cubs aren't willing to give Theriot a fair shot at a starting job, at a bare minimum he's earned a certain bench job.

We have lots more problems than reserve IFs, for which there are many serviceable options.

Bellhorn/Theriot coming would provide Piniella with options for the middle infield and outfield late in the game and would cost less than a Millon between the two. This would allow Hendry to spend big on Craig Wilson. I want Wilson if Jones is with the Cubs next season or not. He's a big RH power bat off the bench that can RF/LF/1B/C/DH/PH he'll probably get around 4 million next season.

We don't need a defensive wiz on the bench. I'd prefer they trade him, but otherwise he needs to play. I agree totally about Craig Wilson. He is the perfect platoon player if Jones is still the RF and would be great at giving DLee or Murton a day off. The problem is that he will probably go to a team that will offer him a starting position.
