What are the Sox asking for him, and why are they so anxious to move him? I think he'd be a fine addition as a #3 or #4, and it would surely make Carlos happy to have a countryman on the pitching staff.

I would also like one of the non-Matsuzaka Japanese FA pitchers and something like a Ted Lilly to round things out. Trying to be realistic about what the Cubs COULD do, I don't think there's a snowball's chance they get Daisuke.

Zambrano, Garcia, Hill, Saito, Lilly? Not bad...

I thought Garcia's velocity was way down toward the end of this year and 05 playoff push was showing up this season.

So you're saying he'll be our #2 or #3 starter?

I'm starting to think Hill will be our 2nd best SP next year. I don't know why, but I just have that feeling. I'm not even that upset about it. If we can add a couple real solid #3s to fill the 3 & 4 spots, I'm ok w/ that rotation.

I don't know what the Sox want for Garcia, but I don't think I want to pay much. I think he's a 3/4 at this point.

I'm counting Hill as a 5 possibly 4 until he proves he can pitch as well as he did at the end of 2006.

He may pitch only good enough to be a 4 or 5. But I just get the feeling that none of these front of the rotation SPs are going to end up in Chicago. I'm just hoping that we're not the team that wildly overpays for a guy like Suppan.

Unless the Sox pick a huge chunk of salary and the Cubs don't give up much in return, I want nothing to do with Freddie Garcia. He was bad most of this year.

I agree, he's only had a couple good seasons in his career. This season seemed more like the norm.

Garcia would be a perfect 3. He has been pitching in the AL his entire career. His whip last year was only 1.28. In 30 IP vs the NL this year he gave up 7 runs and allowed 33 baserunners. So if his ERA was 4.53 last year in the AL my bet is it would be under 4 in the NL. Making 9 million next year seems pretty fair for that kind of production. My bet is we could trade Eyre straight up for him.

Garcia was the only starter towards the end of the year that was doing anything for the Sox. If I remember, he had three games in a row where he had a no-hitter or one-hitter through 6 innings in September. He also pitched in the WBC, so that could also explain why his velocity was down. I would definitely have him in the Cubs rotation, no doubt about it.

i like hill. i want him in the rotation. but if he is our #2 at the start of the season we will be bad. that means we added nothing or next to nothing to the starting staff.

we almost lost 100 games this year. after april we had the worst record in all of baseball.

unless we had 4-5 postiton players a staff of

z,prior, miller, hill and marshall is not going to work. we have no idea what prior and miller will be able to do and we can not repeat the 4 young pitcher thing and compete! adding a meche or lilly might help the consistency but fixing the back end of the rotation will not help this team enough to win.

we are not close to competing right now.

also there is no way lou Piniella signed on to manage a team that is planning on rebuilding.

it is also pretty clear that if we are paying Piniella to manage, hendry must put a serious contender on the field very soon.

Awww, crud. Now I'm stuck in a logic loop.

I'm not saying to count on Hill on a 2 yet, but counting him as a 5 seems foolish.

If Rich Hill is our #5 starter next year I like our chances.

I don't know why, but I have always expected Garcia to become an injury prone pitcher at some point. Signing with the Cubs would make my prediction come true.
