Im not entirely sure a 115 million dollar payroll is going to fix this team, I realize that the division is weak but this team has a ton of holes. Im sure Hendry doesn't see as many of them as I do though.

Sign Soriano, and either sign or trade for a top pitcher, sign a middle class pitcher or sign miller. And these team easily competes in the NL central. I will be happy with that next year with the thought they will improve further next year. however it looks like the Cubs are going to go all out this off-season.

I just don't understand the logic of not being able to win the NL central with an addition of an impact bat and an impact starter.

By trading one of the relievers, you're taking a risk of Kerry Wood being healthy the whole year. I dont think you should count on him bring healthy anymore. You need some insurance incase he is back on the DL.

Eyre was mediocre last year. Keeping him for insurance purposes when you can call up Novoa to strike out a bunch of guys and put up a 1.5 WHIP doesn't make sense.

Eyre was out of shape this year. He still brings alot of value to the Cubs.

You writing that makes me wonder what Lou thinks about off/in season training and the injury bug that hit the Cubs. Maybe he won't let them have their little country club house.

This guy doesn't sound very enthused:

"I know he's a lot different than 'Bake,'" reliever Scott Eyre said. "From what people have said, he's a lot more of an 'in-your-face' guy. He doesn't mess around much. I mean, he'll have fun, but once we're on the field he's very serious.

"I doubt he'll be laid-back. He wants to win, and he'll spark a fire under some people, and maybe some guys here needed that. Or, who knows? Maybe we could've just had a really terrible year."

Asked if an "in-your-face" manager was a necessity, Eyre replied: "I think some guys [need one]. I know at times I got lax and I didn't do what I was supposed to do. But I'm also 34 years old and should be able to police myself. But if he's able to do that, it'll be good for some guys."

Well if you're counting on him to rebound then, that's something else entirely. If he gets in shape and pitches real well then it doesn't really matter if Wood is healthy or not in deciding whether we should keep Eyre.

He still costs too much with very little chance of getting more than what you've already got. Wood can probably be had for less money and a lot more upside. Besides, we've got plenty of decent, cheap and young pitchers who could easily fill bullpen slots.

Bottom line, either Dempster or Eyre needs to go to free up some cash, and Eyre is most likely to get you more in return while not having to pay much of, if any, of his salary.

Please Peolpe everyone bashes Hendry for counting on Wood then they want to ship guys like Dempster and Eyre out of town so we can count on having Wood healthy. Having Wood healthy must be a luxury.

Interesting, thanks for posting that goony. Eyre is a guy that needs to keep in shape better. I wonder who he is talking about that won't like this "in your face" tactic?

He's basically talking about himself. I know that he hates exercise. Like someone posted on another thread, I remember when he said that he liked Baker because, "He doesn't make us run laps at all." He's a guy that won't fit under Piniella's personality, and personally, I think that's a good thing. I'd like to see if we can move Eyre in the next couple of months.

I want Eyre moved because I think his greatest value to the team is as trade bait.

My take is that he's very skeptical about Lou. He thinks some guys could benefit from some in your faceness, but certainly not him. He also doesn't believe he should be force to follow team rules if they require him to do more than he likes doing.

Teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Reds, etc are usually willing to pay a premium for good relievers. Trade him while his value is high, especially if it doesn't seem like he will fit in with Piniella.

Yeah, it sounds like he feels he should have immunity from doing the same drills/exercise as the younger players do solely because he's been in the league for a while.
