If he's their guy, I only hope that Hendry will have the financial leeway to resign Ramirez, and be able to upgrade via FA or trades. He'll need a pretty tamper-proof lineup, because if you give him garbage with Neifi-types on the bench, we're in for more of the same, just with more yelling.

Say it ain't say so Bruce, say it ain't so.

'Tis so. There's still a lot that needs to happen before there's a deal, but he's clearly the Cubs' guy.

Bruce, in your opinion, is this a good fit for the Cubs?

It's a good fit for a desperate GM who needs to win right away. I could see Lou taking a 2 year deal, with some sort of option, to match up with Hendry. He's an old dude, and I don't think he'd be up for more than 2 years of losing if that's what happens.

It can be. The bigger part of the equation will be the players the GM brings in. I've talked to people in different cities who have covered Piniella. They say he's extremely prepared and that he doesn't leave the park on any day without knowing who might need the next day off. I'm told he's very adaptable to the talent he has. This isn't an endorsement or non-endorsement from me. It's just what I've been told.

If the New York Yankees are in the mood to trade Rodriguez this winter, Piniella’s presence could help the Cubs land the superstar.

If signing Piniella means that ARod will come to Chicago, then I support his hiring. Otherwise, I'd rather have Girardi.

I wonder what Aramis thinks of Sweet Lou?

If Hendry really thinks Piniella is the right guy, while not who I would have chosen, that's fine. I just wish he hadn't limited his candidates so much. It seems like there were a lot of options that were never explored.

I doubt he cares. Aramis isn't some Manny-like lazy oaf.

I think its the right move at this time. Obviously, Piniella has more experience than Girardi and we know he knows what he is doing. There are too many questions marks with Joe. As I have said before, I am fine with either one because I don't think we will win next year anyway, but Piniella is the safe choice.

Bruce - can you speak a bit more to this quote?

A lot of us NSBB have just kind of assumed it to be true since they were together in Seattle. Is there any semi-concrete reason to believe they had a strong relationship, even one that would make Alex want to rejoin him?

Also, do you believe this possibility is playing into Hendry's desire for Piniella?

Baker had more experience than Girardi too, and given his "track record" was considered a safe choice.

I'm going to curb my anger until (a) it's made official and (b) I will wait until the off-season transactions. If I'm not impressed... I may be finding other ways to spend those 5-6 months in 2007.

Who are you kidding, you'll be back.

Sweet Lou won't come cheaply.

And won't Jim probably sign whatever manager he gets to a 2 year deal only? Aren't GM's usually unlikely to sign a manager for longer than their own contract?

This is what happens when your GM's job security is very tenuous. Only the safest options are explored.

I really don't want Piniella. After listening to him do Baseball all season and duirng this ALCS he sounds like Dusty except he doesn't preach as much and will probably yell occasionaly.

Lou might be a safe choice, but I think we could do worse.

"We could do worse" isn't exactly a philosophy that wins World Series'.

Dusty crossed with Jim Leyland

Maybe hendry decided that the Tigers were going to win the WS so he might as well hurry up and immitate them? Obviously they won because an old guy yelled at them.
