With the Cubs along with the Nationals, Rangers and Giants having manager openings, I thought I'd create a thread where we can discuss who is interviewing who, who is rumored to be a candidate where, and other information like that.

So, to begin with, it appears that Dusty is being courted by Washington according to the Trib.

Also, it seems as if Washington may be considering Atlanta hitting coach, Terry Pendleton.

The Washington Nationals asked and were granted permission to interview Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton for their managerial opening, a source familiar with the situation said Thursday.

Washington plans to interview Pendleton, the 1991 National League MVP, in the coming days.

Ron Wotus, bench coach for the Giants is listed as a candidate there.

Link.

Wotus, who interviewed for managerial openings with the Los Angeles Dodgers last winter and the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2000, is the only confirmed name in what is expected to be a short list of candidates.

Wotus? Is that a secret service acronym?

Early on, Piniella seemed to get mentioned as a possibility for San Francisco and Washington (and perhaps returning to Seattle, though they seem set for the time being), but I haven't heard him mentioned lately for any slot other than the Cubs. Has anyone else?

Terry Pendleton had a cool catcher's stance.

He'll make a great manager.

i think you are thinking of tony pena who caught for the pirates and managed the royals. pendelton was a switch hitting 3rd baseman not a catcher.

I'm hearing Piniella could be the choice in DC as he does have ties to Bowden.

Former Twin and current A's third-base coach Ron Washington has been mentioned for the job in Texas.

Link.

On Thursday, his name surfaced as a possible replacement for the fired Buck Showalter in Texas.

"I definitely want the chance to manage in the big leagues," said Washington, 54. "The key is to get interviews. Willie Randolph told me he interviewed 11 times before the Mets hired him. I've had three: twice here, and with Florida a year ago."

Washington comes from Oakland, but does he share Beane's philosophies?

This is how the article describes him:

It's going to take an executive who appreciates a candidate with experience, a deep understanding of the game and an ability to talk straight to players to hire Washington.

The Texas rumor with Washington was mentioned to the Twins' Torii Hunter during Thursday's workout at the A's ballpark.

"I love the Twins, but if I was a free agent, the first place I would try to sign would be with Ron Washington's team," he said.

Washington comes from Oakland

That reminds me of some lines from Naked Gun 2

Hector Savage. From Detroit. Ex-boxer. His real name was Joey Chicago.

Oh, yeah. He fought under the name of Kid Minneapolis.

I saw Kid Minneapolis fight once. In Cincinnati.

No you're thinking of Kid New York. He fought out of Philly. He was killed in the ring in Houston. By Tex Colorado. You know, the Arizona Assassin.

Yeah, from Dakota. I don't remember it was North or South.

North. South Dakota was his brother. From West Virginia.

Heard on the Score today that "sources" say Hendry is waiting to see if Bruce Bochy will be available if the Padres lose their series, which would explain his timetable.

Well that could be by tomorrow...

Their "source" is probably this website!

Whatever keeps him out of Chicago.

According to this article, Piniella and Girardi are the top two candidates in Washington, with Baker, Acta, and others listed as possibles.

Former Yankees, Reds, Mariners and Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella and former Marlins manager Joe Girardi are believed to be the team's top choices, with former Giants and Cubs manager Dusty Baker and Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton also among those who have had contact with the Nationals.

Other potential candidates include Mets coaches Manny Acta and Jerry Manuel, but Piniella and Girardi have risen to the top of the pack, according to sources familiar with the Nationals' search to replace fired manager Frank Robinson.

This article implies Piniella and Baker are the leaders and adds a few other candidates.

The Nationals' silence on the matter means there could be other candidates with whom they would like to speak, and several coaches who are considered potential managers -- Oakland's Ron Washington, St. Louis's Jose Oquendo, and Manny Acta and Jerry Manuel of the New York Mets -- are still involved in the postseason

As if things don't get confusing enough, this article says Girardi is the front-runner in Washington.

According to an industry source, Girardi spent Friday in Washington where he interviewed for the Nationals managing job. The Nationals also are expected to interview Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton, but Girardi is believed to be their top target.

What it appears to me is that no one really knows what the hell the Nationals are planning to do.
