Unfortunately, I think the choice will be someone like Piniella. Hendry knows that he needs to get this team back to contention (83-85 wins) next year and going with a young manager who seems to have some "issues" isn't the answer. It would be nice to hire someone like Girardi and show some improvement next year with 2008 as the goal, but the new regime needs to make an impression next year.

You're probably right.

My bet is Piniella....unfortunately.

If not him some other grizzley old vet coach. (See Jim Leyland and what he did) That's been the Hendry mantra and I don't expect it to change.

Vance may have convinced me on Dierker. I managed to get a couple insights from his book and, while not perfect, he's world better than Dusty. Although that doesn't say much.

My bet.......Girardi as Hendry is going to try and appease a restless fanbase. He's probably already nervous thinking about the convention.

I think if Hendry goes with "popular opinion" he will go with Lou or Joe.

I think Hendry will stay clear of Girardi. Girardi is known to not only have conflicted with Loria but with Dombrowski as well. Hendry will know Girardi would be popular and if he got into a power struggle with him, then Girardi's popularity would likely make him the winner in the long run. Hendry will avoid that issue by not pursuing Girardi.

I want to know what influence McDonough will have. He's a marketing guy. Going with the popular pick of Girardi would indicate to me he's calling the shots.

Quite possible Vance. I do think that Hendry might find out why they had problems though as he should do if he truely wants to find the best person for the job.

Hendry will be in full CYA mode this offseason. He has to can his handpicked manager. His mentor and boss is running for the hills. It's easy to realize that your head can be on the chopping block when your watching the two nearest you rolling down the corridor.

Hendry will do everything possible to save his job this offseason. I fear this because I'm not sure he's capable of understanding what needs to be done.

My guess is Piniella will be the next manager and it scares the bejeebus out of me.

I have a strong feeling it will be Brenly. The Trib is considering its options. If they plan to go private they'll need to sell off assets to raise cash. I think they're considering a sale of the Cubs (Fitzsimmons only denied that there is no imminent plan to sell). Hendry, Brenly & McDonough are all short-term solutions while they figure out what to do with the team.

Brenly's been watching the club all year, so he has some idea of what the needs are. And he strikes me as the kind of guy who will follow the Company line.

There are much better options out there, but he's a better choice than a sharp stick in the eye (Piniella).

Unless the new Prez has told Hendry that he has 2 years to show improvement and continues the Cubs trend of letting contracts run their course.

Girardi should win out over Hendry if a struggle did come up.

Joe = Taking a team that people seemed to feel shouldn't even be at AAA, let alone the majors to a respectable record and near a playoff berth.

Hendry = Taking a team that was one foul ball away from a World Series, with a promising young staff and prospects filled to the brim to once again a desolate franchise with no present and no hope for the future.

If Florida wasn't seemingly allergic to success, they would be wise to lock up Girardi beyond his remaining 2 years instead of letting a few spats get in the way of success.

I can see the conversation on Tuesday..

'Great job Joe, you took a team that we nearly guarenteed would be the worst in baseball coming into the year and nearly took them to the playoffs..I think it goes without saying that you are fired.'

Then Stone comes back and takes Hendry's job after a year back in the booth and then hires Lou after Bob struggles to win. The pieces of the puzzle are now adding up.

Dombrowski???

He is with Detroit, and has been the past few years.
