For now I'm saying middle of the pack (I don't think they're really as bad as this year's record would indicate). That could change if Hendry has a good offseason, but after the last couple of years I'm taking an "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude.

If we hire Girardi or Fredi or Dierker and make some decent FA moves, then I'll be optimistic. Until then, not so much.

I'm in agreement with goony. I'm not really optimistic now, but I think it's too early to judge. Some properly spent FA dollars and I might feel a lot better about next season.

The true optimist or blind would just click the best scenario before answering.

then there is us realist that would like to see, analyze the facts then get our hopes crushed

I want to see what happens in the off-season before I even begin getting my hopes up. Though, they will likely screw themselves over anyhow.

I'm pretty much always optimistic before the season starts. A lot has to happen for the Cubs to be good but in a way they are actually better now than they were on opening day 2006. For example:

*Hendry's not going to rely on pitchers that he's knows aren't going to be healthy

*A lot of young players got valuable experience this year that they could benefit from down the line

*some of the dead weight (Perez and Rusch) is already gone

*What was a bad division this year doesn't look like it's going to get any better.

2007 will be another bleak year. I don't see how it can't be. Too many holes, not enough resources (FA and trade bait). Hendry also thinking that 5 moves will completely reverse the team.

He'd have to have a great offseason + Mark Prior turns into at least 2004 Prior, Wood becomes dominating closer, Lee plays like 2005 Lee, Barrett isn't scared of the ball, the bench is built up, little to no injuries, etc. Doesn't seem likely, but hey anything is possible.

With such a low emphasis on OBP, the only way the Cubs can win is with dominating pitching and a decent amount of power (or the complete reverse small ball). I can't see that happening

The cubs have quite a few holes, but with whats available I dont think it would be that hard to fix things well enough to put us in serious contention.

That being said I've seen hendry work for the past few years and I know he probably wont do any of the things necessary to improve the team. So, Im going to say we'll be out of it by july.
