"I miss him, and I'm sure they do. He's a guy you need to have around so he can talk to the young guys and teach them a little bit."

- Henry Blanco when asked about the absence of Greg Maddux

Um, isn't that what a coaching staff is there for?

Couldn't that be said about every aging future HOF pitcher, and for that matter player in general?

I really don't think this says anything about the Cubs coaching staff. Nobody on that staff has won 300 games at the ML level. I would hope that every young pitcher on the Cubs team this year (and the last two as well for that matter) tried to get advice out of Maddux at some point.

That quote is so infuriating to me because Maddux was here for 2.5 years and I don't think any young pitcher improved during that time. He can't teach them to pitch. Just like Jordan can't coach players to be great.

Roberto Novoa: "Hi Greg, what's your secret to getting hitters out?"

Greg Maddux: "I throw strikes."

Roberto Novoa: "How do you do that?"

Greg Maddux: "Just try to hit the spot where they can't get a good swing on it"

Ryan Dempster: "Hey Roberto, I saw you talking to Mad Dog"

Roberto Novoa: "Yeah, I was trying to get some pitching advice"

Ryan Dempster: "Did he give you that crap about throwing strikes?"

Roberto Novoa: "How'd you know?"

Ryan Dempster: "That's what he tells everybody which is idiotic because if I could throw strikes consistently I wouldn't be asking him for advice."

I think Maddux helped them in ways that may not show up now but later. The Cubs had a bunch of kids up this year and I don't think we'll see the results until next year or the year after. It's not like some magic rub Greg gave them, just some tips on how to better themselves and we'll see how they impliment them to their own abilites. IMO, Maddux has a wealth of knowledge and you can't lose by listening to what he has to say.

And I bet you don't really gain much of anything either.

I think Maddux did share knowledge...whether or not the kids on the staff are good enough to execute is a different issue altogether.

This quote says absolutely nothing about the Cubs coaching staff and should not be construed to do so. Keep people's quotes in the context they were spoken within.

Or maybe he's not good at sharing the knowledge. Having the ability doesn't mean you can get others to learn to do what you do.

No, thats the advice that McGwire gave to a young Giambi. Not the advice Maddux gave to a young Marshall.

Marshall supposedly spent a whole lot of time around Maddux if I recall, and he improved quite a bit during that time I thought.

I disagree. I've talked to a few ex MLB pitchers of late and you'd be amazed at some of the things they mention that I wouldn't have thought of or expanded what I already knew and none where at Gregs level. Gooney, it may even just be one time to get out of a tough situation when they think back at something Maddux said and maybe that's all it helped, but it helped. For some, it might mean more than to others. I'd love to hear Maddux talk about pitching for even five minutes one on one.

It's also been proven that sometimes peer teaching is a wonderful way of teaching pupils/players something that teachers/coaches may not be able to do. They sometimes have a way of saying it in better ways or in a manner student/players could learn easier from. I agree it doesn't always work but when you have someone you respect like a Maddux talking, I think these guys would listen more than to Rothschild, maybe not all but some. Heck, wasn't it Hank that the article was quoted from...a catcher? I do beleive that very good information is there for them to take but how they apply or applied it is up to them.

Hank seems to disagree with you.

I don't really care what the players say, I care what the results show.

These are the same people who wind up in broadcast booths and anchor desks talking like Morgan and Kruk, jabbering about any and everything.

That's a very valid point. The best teachers are not necessarily the smartest or the ones that have the most ability but the ones that can explain the information in a way for all of the students to understand. Knowledge is nothing for a teacher if you can't explain the material so the students understand what you are saying.

Or maybe some of the young guys don't have the physical tools to implement what they've learned from Maddux. Or maybe they've picked things up during the season, but they haven't had the chance to develop confidence in any new concepts yet and aren't using them. Or maybe it's just not that reasonable to expect a bunch of noobs to pitch like HOFers just because they spent 5 months around a legend.

I say give it some time and see how some of these kids do. Most of the young guys have shown enough promise to indicate they can absolutely compete and succeed at this level. I view Marmol, Marshall, and Mateo as just needing to improve their consistancy, they've already shown the ability.

Blanco didn't say anything you wouldn't hear a player say about any future HOFer, but I get your point. I've never liked the idea of bringing in over-the-hill vets for a mentoring/teaching role. The coaching staff is paid for that stuff, and if they can't do it then someone else should have their jobs, and expensive veteran players who can't perform just eat up payroll and roster spots that could be spent on players who can still play up to their salary.
