How the hell did we get to talking about pitching mechanics? You can tell based on a pitcher's mechanics if he's a good pitcher or not?

Just because you were a former pitcher doesn't mean you're improperly judging a pitcher if W/L is such an important criteria to you.

I dont remember anyone saying that a pitchers mechanics is important for success. But by you bringing it up, yeah it is important. A pitcher with poor mechanics is more likely to break down than a pitcher with good mechanics. Having better mechanics means you have more velocity, and more control with your pitches.

Im not a "former" pitcher. Im still pitching.

While that is mainly true, it still boils down to performance. When judging performance, I could care little about the mechanics used to achieve that performance.

Moving from pitching to hitting...

Take Vlad Guerrero. Fundamentally, there's much he does wrong, but when evaluating his performance, there's no doubt he's successful.

Another example is Jeff Bagwell. I don't know a hitting instructor anywhere that would think his stance is fundamentally sound, yet he gets the job done.

Evaluating peformance is different than knowing the techniques involved. Knowing those techniques may provide insight such as predicting injury problems or projecting a minor leaguer, but they matter little in discerning who has produced.

.

Hmmm....

See Kerry Wood, 1998.

I care about the mechanics, especially when they were as bad as Wood's (Throwing across his body, shoulder lagging, increased pressure, etc).

He had good results, but paid the price.

Since you said anyone can judge a pitcher by how good his mechanics are. I want to know what you think, or anyone else thinks Ben Sheets is doing wrong in this photo?

The fact he is throwing out the stretch in that photo helps lead me to conclude that his mechanics are pretty good in that photo. I'd like to see him more foreward as he probably land short on his stride of where it should be, but his hand placement is fine on his throwing arm as he isn't short-arming the ball.

All his momentum has been linear in that photo as there has been no hip rotation.

It's pretty good overall.

Yeah, he isnt short-arming the ball, but his arm is going to lag behind his body.

In what order do you rank these 3 pitchers?

Pitcher C has a decent career record and had a good season. Pitcher B has a career winning record, and the best seasonal won/loss record. Pitcher A has a career losing record and had a horrible year. If wins and losses are an important stat to measure their value, let's just see who you would rather have of these 3 guys.

Coincidentally, these 3 pitchers have all played together on the same team in the same year.
