"We want Murton to get more time so calling up Pie would take away from that. Pierre is going to play every day."

The basic jist of what he said. Are they just kissing Pierre's butt so they can resign him because I have no idea why he HAS to play everyday.

that's ridiculous. but yes my guess is they are trying to re-sign him or they have a deal with him to get him playing time to up his value. hey, why let organizational needs get in the way of a veteran's greed?

either way, I would call him up and just give an inning here or there as a taste.

I don't neccessarily think Pie needs to be called up, so I'm fine with this. He also tells us Murt needs to play a lot, which is good.

I don't see much wrong with this.

It's not just about Pie for me but the fact that the Cubs are playing for the worst record in baseball and Pierre is going to play every game. Why not try Jones or Pagan in CF? What if Pierre does leave....I think seeing how somebody else would do out there would help for next year.

There's nothing wrong with it, except that we're effectively ending our top prospect's season because we want a free-agent-to-be to get as much playing time as possible. It's a ridiculous statement. Can we only play one rookie at a time? Can't Jacque take some days off? We all know Murton isn't going to play every day anyways, so you might as well replace the days Pagan plays with Pie.

If we let him play up his value more thats fine because than it becomes more likely another team will offer a multi-year deal and we can more safely offer arbitration. Heck, maybe Pierre agreed to not agree to arbitration assuming we let him play so as to help his value in the FA market.

He's gonna play in the AFL isn't he? I as well see nothing wrong with this, especially because Murton gets more playing time.

There's also a school of thought that would say that even if they know positively that Pierre will be re-signing with the Cubs, that it might be worthwhile to see how other plays can handle CF in case Pierre were to be injured. Too bad that won't be happening.

Pierre is on his free agency drive. Hendry and Dusty don't want to interfere with that. As usual, they're both more loyal to individuals than they are to the team.

They should be in charge of a beer league team if that's the case. I do admire Hendry for being a nice guy to the players but there's a point where you have to take care of business.

There was a lot more to the interview by that

Summary of the Interview

Hendry said that the injuries have been unfortunate, but that the team cannot use that as an excuse and that the team needs to be fixed

He said that Murton, Cedeno, and Theriot would be gettting a lot of playing time in September

He said that they would "entertain the possibility" of re-signing Pierre

He said there might not be 10-12 new faces next year, but that they definitely need some new players, and that the team needs to be fixed over the offseason.

As has been reported, he said that another catcher and Ryu will be up tomorrow. Pie will probably not join them, but will work out in Arizona and be ready to play winter ball.

There was a lot of good in this interview-one of the better Hendry interviews I've seen.

At least he's admitting that things are broken. Now let's see him actually fix them.

Yeah but he's going to fix things his way so the point is moot.

I did like hearing him say that the 3 young guys are going to play and I also would like to have heard that Soto would get some time too.

Upsides:

Pie has been playing since winter ball and could use the rest.

Pie's clock doesnt get started, so the Cubs can keep him for an extra year.

Baker and his cronies don't get their hands on Pie.

If Pierre manages to gets his numbers up, he could qualify as a type A FA and get the Cubs two first rounders (if those rules are upheld)

If Pierre sucks, it'll get the team more losses, inevitably leading to Baker's firing and a higher draft pick.

Downsides:

Pie could use some ML experience in order to assess whether he'll be ready next season or not.

The Cubs needs to determine whether or not Pie can be the starter in CF next season, ML ABs would help that cause tremendously.

I definitely think Soto needs to get a lot of time. They don't need to evaluate Blanco; they already know what they have with him. They do, however, need to see whether they can count on Soto as the backup catcher next year, and they won't find that out if Soto is glued to the pine.

I really think this is being done so Pie's service time doesnt start. I really am not against this if it is the case. Especially since Dusty wouldnt probably even consider playing him in Right or Center with Pierre and Jones there. So you would have Murton, Pagan and Pie fighting for scraps in left instead of being the starting OF for the month like they should be in the Cubs case.

OFF Topic but why do they put players on the dl in Sept? I now it probably doesnt really make a difference but what if Barrett was ready to go in less than 15 days?

Why put him through unneccesary wear and tear?

Coats was sent down less than 10 days (or games-I can't remember which one it is) ago, and to bring him back up they had to put somebody on the DL.

I don't think that rule applies any more since rosters have expanded. In 2002 Zambrano was sent down, then called back up just a couple of days later when rosters expanded. This was done to make room on the roster for someone coming off the DL. He didn't miss a start and didn't even report to Iowa.

To me the only reason for putting someone on the DL at this point is if it's the 60-day to create a space on the 40-man roster.

I'm not sure..that's just what Len and Bob said why Barrett was put on the DL.

Hendry also said "We're going to solve this in the offseason and be right back in it next year."

Which is exactly what he said this time last year.

So you'll all have to excuse me. These days I tend to gag uncontrollably whenever Jimbo says something.

i think the cubs will resign pierre & pie will be switched to rf in 07. that said, it is probably a good thing that baker & his crew dont get a chance to mess pie up. he would probably just sit on the bench & watch bynum play in the OF anyway.
