He has really been impressive the last few games. He should be starting everyday for the rest of this season, IMO. Would a middle infield of Izturis-Theriot produce enough? We could trade away Ronny for pitching possibly...

Thoughts?

Emphatic no to Theriot starting. He's a utility player that's going through a great stretch, counting on him beyond that would be foolish.

I think he would be a wonderful 8 hitter and a decent 2. I haven't seen a lot of his defense to judge him at second or SS though.

Perfect world, Theriot takes Neifi's spot as utility man for next year and is actually used correctly. Of course, if Cedeno and Izturis are starting ahead of him, and all are hitting like they are this year....then there will be an argument for Theriot.

I'd like to see Theriot start the rest of this year, however, at this point I do not see him as anything more than a spot starter. I'd love for him next year to start twice a week. Once at SS and once at 2b. I think it is important to give players a day off here and there. Especially when they are not much better than your bench players. Assuming we do not drastically upgrade either of those postions.

Well if the Cubs get AJones, ARod and Soriano for the middle like I expect them too Theriot would be a perfect sub!

Agreed, though Theriot brings something that neither of those guys do which is plate discipline. He walks, and he swings at strikes. That approach puts him ahead of about half the team and light years above what Neifi brought to the table.

Theriot has always been looked at as a utility guy. I doubt he's shown enough to convince anyone that he's a long term solution. However, given Patterson's success at AAA coupled with the Cubs need for a 2nd baseman that could bat 1-2 in the order, might the Cubs consider Theriot as a placeholder until Patterson is ready?

He reminds of Jamey Carroll . A good utility player.

which would be nice after the ones we've had the last couple of years

And people said that David Eckstein shouldn't play sports because he was so small, or not toolsy enough, blah, blah. If Theriot can play, like him play. You never know what Theriot can do, unless you give him the opportunity to play.

So, yes, I like to see him be seriously considered to start in 2007.

On the flipside of that thinking, that's pretty much how we got saddled with Cedeno.

Would you feel different if he continues this tear until the end of the year?

Not at all.

Again, Cedeno. Unlike, say, Murton, Theriot's history up until this point likely dictates he will not be this kind of player longterm. That's not say he couldn't, which is why I'd like him as the main middle IF backup, but history indicates it would be probably only slightly less foolish going into next year with Theriot at 2nd than if you did with Cedeno.

I believe Theriot is a better option starting at 2B than Cedeno. Good enough defense and a much better approach at the plate. His level of improvement at different Minor League levels show me that he could be a .300 avg/.370 OB/30+ SB player.

Well it depends on what our strategy is for next year. Are we making some big FA splashes to try and buy a winner? Or are we going to take this a little more slowly and try out some younger players?

If we decide to go with youth he would be an upgrade to Cedeno. Based on his minor league career you could probably expect a .350 OBP out of him. The big thing is slugging. Except for his hot streak he's had right now he has never shown power. I don't expect that to change long term so the only way he is more than a utility guy for his career is if he could sustain a .370-.380 OBP. Not impossible, but not terribly likely.

Your quotes can come back to haunt you.

Cedeno needs a good hitting coach. When he was with Joshua he didn't hit like this. Moreover, he's been moved from SS to 2nd, then sat a number of games, then played at 2nd, then moved back to SS. Not smart moves by the Cubs with a rookie who has been struggling at the plate. But then again, they are the Cubs.

More moreover, in Winter ball last year he didn't play an inning at 2nd even though the Cubs were supposedly hot and heavy after Furcal. Again, not a smart move by the Cubs, but then again they are the Cubs.

BTW: Cedeno was rookie of the year in his league in Winter ball.

Ronnie has hit very poorly and has showed very little plate discipline. He's never had much, but at least he use to be able to pick a pitch to hit.

This is all true.

Of course, even Izturis had a stretch where he was one of the best hitters in the NL.

Which I already alluded to. Murton doesn't have the extnded craptacular history that Cedeno does, so his success isn't really as "out of the blue" as Ronny's was.

If we had an Alou type in LF and an Ajones type in RF then I wouldn't mind theroit at 2B at all. He seems to take alot of pitches and make good contact. But we are at the position where we need to upgrade 2B, CF, and RF. And if you can get a great bat for 2B you've got to take it.

Exactly.
