The Djaxx will be the Cubs AA affiliate next year?

I am hoping they will be, but judging by the crowd size at the game I went to I highly doubt it.

I was in West Tenn this weekend to watch son pitch final game of season tonight. I had heard that a decision has been made on the team but will not say anything until officially announced... I will say that it is very disappointing as a parent to have been here on numerous occasions and the dismal attendence this team seems to draw. Its amazing that during the entire game the attendance was never announced and nothing in the sovenuir shop.

I know this may be a dumb question but happens when they aren't affiliated with the Cubs? Do the players go to a different affiliated team?

A MLB team signs a contract with a minor league organization that will be their affiliate. In the event that the Cubs have not renewed their contract with the Jaxx, they will find a new organization and sign a contract with them that will start in '07. Meanwhile, the Jaxx will have to find another team to sign a contract with.

So, are there unaffliated minor league teams just waiting out there to be affliated with a ML Org?

It's not unusual for a contract between a MLB organization and a minor league organization to expire. FWIW it's my understanding that there are a lot of affiliation contracts that are set to expire at the end of this season.

if I remember right, the contracts between minor clubs and MLB teams can be signed for either 2 or 4 years...I believe the Chiefs contract is technically up at the end of the year, but they must have some belief that they'll be staying with the Cubs. The final year as a Cardinals affiliate, our souvenir shop had pretty much everything go on sale the last month of the season, and that hasn't happened this year! At least in the Midwest League, it seems that all the contracts are due in the same year, so there's a lot of swapping that seems to take place...so when we signed with the cubs, the Lansing franchise signed with Toronto and Quad Cities got the Cardinals.

nope. September 2008. 4 year deal.

I think that's true in the Southern League as well. I know at least that Tennessee's contract with Arizona is up, as was Carolina's contract with Florida (although that one has already been renewed).

well, that explains things! In general, there are teams that sign 2 year deals though, right? thanks nate :)

If by chance, the Cubs won't reupped with the D'Jaxx is there a particular city/team that has been linked to the Cubs?

Some people on here seem to think that next year they will be the Tennessee Smokies and they are located about 20 miles east of Knoxville Tn.

That's the rumor I heard about in January or so.

One more piece of the Southern League puzzle has fallen into place. I read a brief blurb in my local newspaper today that Milwaukee extended its agreement with Huntsville through 2008.

Wow, they've been with the Brewers for a long time. I think the last affilliation they had before the Brewers was with the Twins.

There was an article in Sunday's News Sentinel about the affliiation swap

http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/smokies_baseball/article/0,1406,KNS_329_4965426,00.html

For those who don't want to read the article, it says that the meetings between teams can begin at the end of the season (today for the Smokes) and must be concluded by September 30th or MLB and the NABPL will pick your affliates for you. It says that's a rarity as most teams get deals done long before that date. I was surprised that the DiamondJaxx hadn't drawn 100,000 this year. The Smokies have been awful and have drawn over 250,000.

yikes. I'm sad things didn't work out. It'll be interesting to see how this impacts not only the affiliation contract but our relationship with the Jaxx in the event that the the Cubs do renew their contract. I did think it was interesting to read that mayor farmer had been working so close with the new ownership group for the past few months. Maybe if the mayor worked at all with the current ownership group things would be different.

If the sale is approved, Jaxx General Manager Jeff Parker will remain with the team, Stuart said. Stuart said he has not spoken with David Lozinak, vice president of administration for the Jaxx, about remaining with the team, "though we would certainly like to do that."

The Cubs should have a much better AA affiliate. The I-Cubs, D-Cubs and Peoria are very well supported. Hell, the rookie league teams are even quite popular. Less than 100,000 attendance for a AA team is pathetic.

I didn't realize Tim was associated with the Jaxx.

If they come to East Tenneseee, I'd say attendance will improve dramatically. Since we've had Arizona, attendance has dropped a bit due to not being in contention for the SL title, but we've still drawn at least 250,000 for the last several years.

Nate, any guesses on what will happen in the MWL next year as far as new location and diff. affiliates? I've heard several rumors, but none appear to close to being true.

I only live about an hour to an hour and a half south of the Smokies' stadium so it'd be awesome if the Cubs' AA moved to Knoxville.

The reasons given in the News Sentinel make good sense too.
