According to Ken Rosenthal, Mulder is considering season-ending surgery on his arm (which effectively ruins his chances at a big dollar contract, as if his stats didn't do that already).

Given that he's a Chicago native (although a White Sox fan supposedly) should Hendry continue his tradition on giving a one-year "make good" contract to post-surgery pitchers for 2007? He's a great pitcher when healthy, and is only 29.

What do folks think about it?

The Cubs might lose Wood so the DL list would look loney without another name pitcher on it next to Prior.

I think Hendry might be a little gunshy when it comes to pitchers with arm injuries, at least ones he has to count on in 2007. IMO, he's going to go after an innings eater type guy.

If you are going to give make good contracts, you have to build in a team option for the 2nd year. It makes no sense to pay a guy to rehab, but then not have a chance to profit after he's better. I assume season ending surgery would affect his 2007. By 2008 he might be good. If you offer a $500k guarantee in 2007 with a $1m buyout in 2008 and $6m team option, then it might make sense. But just paying a guy $1m to rehab with no recourse for the team after the season is stupid.

Post of the year.

Lets add another pitcher with arm problems.

Why not. Go for it.

That was quite an ignorant post. The thread started with a question, should the Cubs go for another reclamation project. He did not create a "let's get Mulder thread".

Why do we want another reclmation project:

When we have:

Prior

Wood(ole, Jimmy has visions of Wood still dancing thru his head...maybe

as a dominant closer)

Miller(Jimmy's cocky and Miller will be back so he can prove it was worth a gamble)

Is there anyone else we can nuture back?

People need to stop with this "reclemation project" crap. Get a freaking

pitcher that can give you innings.

So your answer is no? My answer would be possibly. I would have to know more about the surgery, and make it worthwhile by giving the team the option. You wouldn't sign him as one of your starters for 2007, but its a similar, if not better, investment as you'd take in a young kid who might never make it past AA. Mulder has high upside if healthy.

I would have no problem with these reclamation projects as long as they

have a backup plan, which they never do.

I wan't to blow this whole team up as I said in another post..but If I was

gonna truly "GO FOR IT" this is how I would do it.

1. Zambrano

2. Zito or Matsuzaka

3. Vicente Padilla

4. Sean Marshall/Rich Hill

5. Prior/Mulder/Marmol/Miller

Worst case scenario:

Prior, Mulder, and Miller remain hurt. Marshall and Hill Suck.

Not likely

Best case:

Prior, Mulder, and Miller get healthy and throw up their career avgs.

Marshall and Hill continue to improve.

also not likely.

Most probably.

1/3(prior, mulder, miller) stay healthy and post career averages.

one of the young guys steps up.

Thats how you take risks..by covering your but.

Hendry should take notes.

Mulder's velocity was wayyy down in his return. I don't think the risk/reward is any better than just letting a younger guy pitch. No thank you.

Yeah, I haven't been a Mulder fan since his first few seasons in Oakland. He was looking like the best of the Big 3 for a while (Hudson, Zito included), but easily was the one you could predict wouldn't continue his success. The Cubs need real help. No more of this lightning in the bottle crap, unless there is legitimate high reward chances. Mulder if healthy, IMO, is still a low end #3 starter.

The worst thing about Hendry's reclamation projects is that they waste a spot on the 40-man roster. And this offseason we have too many youngsters who need protecting to waste a spot on a crapshoot like Mulder.

Man, the Cardinals were so stupid to go after that reclamation project Chris Carpenter.

I personally would pass on Mulder because I don't think his velo is coming back - even to the levels they were at during his last days in Oakland/early days in STL.

Mulder is the type of guy who, if he were healthy around spring training and wanted to come in for a shot, I don't mind. But if he's going to play hardball and demand a 40 man roster spot, no way. Make him earn it.

I don't see the point? That was the Cardinals. I'm talking about the Cubs.

Show me one Hendry "rehab project" that has panned out.

And please don't bring up Ryan Dempster who was a flash in the pan.

And as I stated I have nothing against a reclamation project as long as there

is a contingency plan.

Well how about first we list the Hendry rehab projects and their relative success, because they really haven't been that many I don't believe.....

Ryan Dempster - moderate success until recently

Wade Miller - still unknown

Chad Fox - Never could recover...I believe he cost around $600k, but I could be wrong on that

So if Miller pans out at all, I'd call it 2 of 3, and it wasn't like Chad Fox was counted on, or cost a lot.

If anyone remembers more, please let me know...I'm not trying to ignore anything for arguments sake...

Oh and please don't bring up Wood and Prior...they were injured while playing for the Cubs, and thus don't count as "reclamation projects".

What was the contingency to the Cardinals rehabbing Carpenter?

Plenty. coming off 2003 they had

Woody Williams

Matt Morris

at the front end

Aquired Jeff Suppan as a 3

They unknowns were Jason Marquis and Carpeneter.

They had 3 sold starters though in place.

going into 2004 there was a pretty solid consensus that St. Louis did not have the staff to contend - much less win 100+ games. they got pretty lucky in the way things panned out - and they built a stellar pen.

The starting pitching on the FA market is very slim. I think Hendry might have to acquire a pitcher through a trade(John Lackey, Tim Hudson).

John Lackey won't be available unless it's for a steep price.
