I don't know about Ortiz but Manny has sat out the past few games.

Also, how horrible does that lineup look without those two guys? Loretta and Youkilis as the 3-4 hitters. Unbelievable.

They have given it up IMO. Can't blame them.

Their team was better last year, but still, wasn't even close to having the ability to get to the WS.

They will re-tool this offseason with 2 big signings:

Zito

Soriono

That is why I am hoping the Red Sox make a miracle run to the playoffs. It will be impossible to do anything good in the offseason with the Red Sox likely outspending everyone.

Wow...www.boston.com is reporting that Ortiz was sent back to Boston with an irregular heartbeat. This heart issue caused him to spend a night in the hospital during the Yankees series a week ago.

Obviously if he is home in Boston, its highly unlikely he will be able to make it back to play on the rest of the road trip.

Just saw this on ESPN.com. This is going to absolutely kill the Sox with Manny being hurt right now as well. Hopefully he gets better.

They are going to need shutouts from Beckett and Schilling and basically hope everyone comes back.

They have 16 of their final 26 at home. Four of the road games are at NYY, so, I wouldn't count Boston out until Labor Day.

Yes they were. Three weeks ago they were the favorite in the East. Injuries change everything in a strech-run when it happens to a team's leader in either spirit or production.

Beckett is not good. not too likely.

The Sox had been a very lucky team for the first 3 months of the season. Their pythagorean record was screaming for a decline

In case anyone was wondering, the cubs are above their expected wins. If the Cubs and Pirates played to their expected wins, we'd be in last in the NL.

I think the Sox are pretty much dead anyway.

He's good against the Cubs....too bad the Red Sox don't have to face us

Gotta disagree. The loss of Damon really hurt that team.

Oh I completely agree. They were dead right when the got swept at Fenway by the Yankees. This is still the Red Sox trailing the Yankees and not the other way around. The Red Sox are done. No playoffs for Boston this year.

what hurt that team is not having any pitching - the offense is fine. losing wakefield hurt a lot.

Timlin's post AS break free-fall has killed the bullpen, especially given that their innings have increased with the loss of Wakefield, Clement, and Wells.

There's a multitude of reasons why Boston won't make the playoffs this year:

1) Wells being hurt for most of the season

2) Wakefield being out for too many starts

3) Beckett picthing like a #4 or #5 starter rather than the #2 they were hoping for

4) Crisp not living up to expectations and offensively taking a big step backwards from last season coupled with Damon putting up great numbers in NY.

5) Basically having no pitchers to carry them from the 5th inning where too many starters have ended to Papelbon in the 9th - See Saenez & Tavarez.

Papi is in the hospital with heart problems, Varitek is out until who knows when, Manny and Pena are back in Boston and I heard today that they're hoping to trade Wells by Thursday.

They're pretty much over for 2006 and they have alot of retooling to do for 2007.

Right now I think they have more people on the DL then the Cubs do...however a lot of the people on the DL just went on recently, unlike the Cubs.

They have barely gotten anything out of Clement for the last 2 years, and hes on the DL too.

I think fans are really going to jump on Theo for this mess (and already are). The thing is, he made a lot of gutsy decisions while dismantling the championship team, he mostly stuck to his philosophy. I have no problems with the Crisp trade when it was made, the Beckett trade mostly too. Hanley Ramirez would have been great for this team, and Beckett was a walking injury the last few years, but the gamble had big upside, and they got a lot out of Lowell until recently.

I think the Red Sox ownership realized this was a transition year anyways (athough a transition year in Boston is nothing like one on the Northside), and to be competitive most of the season in a 'transition year' is pretty good. They have a lot of young pitching talent that they are developing and probably will be great in a year or two. The key for them is to not let time waste while Manny and Ortiz are still in their prime. The Red Sox will be back in the playoffs next year, fear not.

Personally I think you're about dead on with my feelings as well. I honestly don't think Theo expected them to have been in the hunt as long as they were because realistically the only way they could have added talent at the deadline was to trade some of their young arms which other teams wanted. You're right that Theo is taking a gamble, and likely one which will either make or break his link with the Red Sox in 2007 or 2008.

It's a tough gamble to make to believe that you have star arms in the making with Hansen, Del Carmen and Lester - at least 2 of those kids HAVE to be better than average by 2008 for his gamble to have worked because despite Boston having a high payroll, I just don't think they're going to go overboard to pay big money for free agents. If it turns out 2 of the 3 pitchers fade and don't ever live up to expectations, all it will take is one of the guys Theo traded (A. Sanchez, H. Ramirez or A. Marte) to become a better than average player and he's going to suffer the wrath of the fans despite getting them a WS ring in 2004.

You're absolutely correct that they really can't afford to waste too much time with Ortiz and Manny passing the midpoint of their careers, but I'd add Schilling, Wakefield and Varitek to that list of names as some guys who may not have many years left. I expect the Red Sox are going to look quite a bit different in 2007 and even more different in 2008.

I'll tell you one thing - as a Cub fan moving out to the east coast a few years ago, I used to think Cub fans were tough on their team sometimes, it's NOTHING compared to the ridiculousness of Boston fans!! One minute you're the best thing since sliced bread and the next they want you out the door for a sack of peanuts!! They're absolutely idiotic at times!!

Just when things couldn't any worse for Boston - they did. Papelbon left the game in the 9th holding his throwing shoulder after a breaking ball to Overbay.

They are supposed to get most of the guys back early next week (Tek, Nixon, Ortiz, Gonzalez, Pena, maybe Ramirez). 5.5 back with 28 to play is probably too much. If Papelbon is done, they are done.
