Fun fact of the day: Geo Soto is hitting .272/.367/.495/.862 since the all-star break (~120 PA's)

He's penciled in as my backup catcher for 2007. It would be stupid to spend money on a veteran cacther, unless Barrett is traded or moved to a new position.

Yeah, Barrett's young enough and his bat is good enough that he is needed to play 130+ games behind the plate. Soto would be perfectly fine for 30 or so games.

I agree. His offense should be comparable to Blanco's. I always heard that he is good defensively. Is this still accurate?

I think it is important to be strong defensively up the middle. Barrett is only okay, so having a strong defensive back-up is ideal.

While I think the power is a bit of a fluke, he's always been able to draw some walks. I see him being something like a .250/.320/.360/.680 guy next year, which I'd be just fine with from a backup catcher. It's not amazing production, but it's good enough given the league minimum salary.

Tough 1-0 loss for Iowa and JK Ryu tonight; Bizarro Derek Lee had a two hit CG SO.

West Tenn knotted at 2 heading into the bottom of the 9th. Scott Moore got the start at SS.

Daytona got clobbered 8-1 with Ryan Harvey getting the lone Daytona RBI.

Peoria with a good showing in tonight's game, winning 3-1. Almost everyone chipped in with hits, walks, and quality contributions.

Robert Hernandez got off to a rough start in Mesa, giving up 3 runs, 6 hits, and 2 BBs in 3 IP. Mesa is losing 3-1 in the 4th.

West Tenn lost 4-2. Mobile scored two runs in the bottom of the 9th (obviously a walk-off home run; otherwise only one run would have counted).

Yeah, Mobile's Drew Macias (no relation to Jose) hit a 2-run HR with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th against Bobby Brownlie (Colt Morton was at third base).

EPatt makes the Team Photo in BA's Hot Sheet:

Eric Patterson, 2b, Triple-A Iowa (Cubs): While he put up OK numbers at Double-A West Tenn, hitting .263/.330/.408, Patterson has been on fire since getting called up to Triple-A on Aug. 19. In 36 at-bats with the I-Cubs, Patterson is .417/.425/.528.

A shame that they'd use Brownlie in a game situation like that; that's like the Cubs using Rusch in a similar situation.

Of course, that game had no bearing on their playoff chances anyway. It's the games involving Huntsville and Chattanooga that will determine their fate (including the Jaxx five game season-ending series against Chattanooga).

Did Scott Moore really start at SS?

Yes. He's been getting playing time at SS and 1B (just like Jake Fox has gotten PT at LF, RF and 1B) and will continue to do so for the remainder of the season. Moore and Fox will play their regular positions a bit too.

If Moore could keep up his batting numbers at SS and be adequate there defensively, he would experience a boon to his prospect status, no?

Jesse Estrada looked better than I've ever seen him (in 2 seasons)for the Chiefs...hopefully he'll be able to carry it into the playoffs! The most amazing thing to me anyway was his pitch count...he only threw about 72 or 73 pitches through 7 innings - it was awesome to see. Woo hoo! :)

Making his fourth spot start of the season, Chiefs right-hander Jesse Estrada allowed two hits, no walks and one run in seven innings.

"Right now, Estrada is in that (No. 3) spot," Davis said. "You get in the playoffs, a short series, we're probably going to need him out there. Especially lately, he's thrown the ball real well. You get in a short series, you better fire your bullets.

"He was pitching ahead, keeping the ball down and keeping them off-balance. He did just about everything pretty well."

Estrada kept his fastball low in the strike zone and utilized a late-breaking slider. Estrada stated his case to follow Mitch Atkins and Scott Taylor in the rotation when the playoffs begin Sept. 6.
