Eh, about Pawelek. He's got the potential for three above average to plus pitches from the left side, which warrants a top five spot in just about any farm system, but while I don't value plus makeup for a prospect way down the food chain, I do think that a bad makeup can mean prospect death way down the food chain.

I am not saying Pawly has bad makeup, but eh it makes you wonder at this point. He's also lost a year of advancement because of it. Had he performed well at Peoria. He could be on the A+/AA plan next year that Gallagher took this year. However, I think they will give him a fullseason at Peoria like they did Atkins. Although they may not. Who knows.

I think the Cubs will more willing to push Pawelek next season than they would with Atkins this season (even though they'd be similar...HS draftees in their second pro season/first in a full-season league).

All this stat talk, is like a foreign language to me. Should I go back to school, to learn what all these stats mean. BABIP/OBP/SOB/AM in the KT, blah, blah, blah.

Call me old school, give the Cubs ballplayers, who can play the game, and leave the stats to the geeks (no offense, ya'll)

Actually, I am not stupid enough to do this, but I'd go with:

1. Donald Veal

2. Felix Pie

3. Mark Pawelek

4. Sean Gallagher

5. Eric Patterson

By not being stupid enough I mean I won't list the Cubs top 5 bases soley on my thoughts. If a lot of players like but I dont, I know I have just my opinion and know that's not always right and I should account for that.

Sorry to bump up something from a few days ago, but Veal over Pie?

The shroud of Corey Patterson haunts me. He's turned it on of late, put his K rate has remained relatively constant all season long as well as his BB rate. What is he? Mike Cameron with a little less walks? Sure he's got the tools, but it's not as if this discipline problem is a new develop.

For what it is worth, I also suspect you're going to see Veal ahead of Pie in several minor league lists including Baseball America's and BA's lust for tools.

Veal also has a pretty major flaw involving walks, is a pitcher with an injury past and is at high-A while ~6 months older than Felix.

Really? I think with the way he turned it on at the end of the season (given his age at AAA...BA will love that), I think BA will give the nod to Pie over Veal.

I'd go

1) Pie

2) Veal

3) Gallagher

4) Pawelek

5) Mateo (if he doesn't count, EPatt)

Edited because I messed up the ages.

Mateo? Really?

I can think of a couple of guys I'd put over him without much trouble...

Who? There's obviously a huge drop-off after #4.

Eric Patterson, Tyler Colvin (yes, I am high on him), Scott Moore, and then possibly JK Ryu, Mitch Atkins and Jake Fox, depending on how the rest of the season pans out and what scouting reports/first-hand accounts come out about each (if Fox will stick at C, Atkins could still add some velocity, Ryu gets called up and has a few good starts).

Also, it depends on how you define the whole prospect thing. If some one like Guzman or Marmol would qualify, I would definitely put him above Mateo.

Ryu has been lost in the shuffle his whole career. He's got a deep arsenal of pitches, and he's doing well in Iowa at age 23. He's a little younger than Mateo and has consistently been a level higher. I'd rank him over Mateo.

Ryu is the only one I'd consider above Mateo. I have questions about where Fox will play in the big leagues, Colvin - ehhh, it's short-season A-ball and he's been ok, EPatt has been ok at AA and Atkins is too low in the minors without the best of stuff. Just not that high on Moore.

Of course, I'd rate Guzman and Marmol (I'd also rate them ahead of Gallagher and Pawelek) ahead of Mateo. Anyways, at this rate, Mateo won't qualify for prospect lists because of his innings pitched at the big league level.

Uh, isn't the point of being a "stat geek" to find ballplayers who can play the game well?
