ah, old game threads are fun...

GO TO HELL, RICH HILL!!! I LOATHE YOU WITH EVERY OUNCE OF HATRED I CAN MUSTER!

Oh, Rich Hill. You've wooed me! I'm all yours!

I wish someone wrote a book that detailed the offers that Hendry received for Hill last year.

Yes, I'm firmly on the Rich Hill bandwagon

Hill reminds us what AAAA means. Man, he is just awful. Three straight walks, sac fly, walk, grand slam. He did that all to himself. I'd rather have Glendon Rusch.

Me encanta Rich Hill!

What the hell, man? Most of us bashing him earlier prefaced repeatedly that we WANT to be proven wrong. Now that we have been proven wrong so far, pretty much all of us are admitting we may have jumped the gun and praising Hill's stepping up to the ML level. These "told you so" posters are getting pretty tedious, especially since they're not really "catching" anyone at anything and really only seem to be wanting to annoy/embarass other posters. I mean, you pick two of my posts where I was clearly just ranting, mostly for comedic sake, and ignored the dozens of others where I actually explained why I didn't like Hill earlier and how I hoped he'd prove my apprehension wrong and all of the posts where I've specifically said he's shown that my previous opinions might very well be incorrect. Not cool.

He's just showing that Hill is proving you wrong right now. And might I add I understand some of you WANTED Rich to do well. But you certainly weren't showing it. While some of us kept saying we wanted to see him given a FAIR SHOT. IE: atleast 8-10 consecutive chances to get over his lack of confidence. He's seemed to gotten over that hump, so right now, just. . .

Before we annoint him the next coming, keep in mind he was pitching against a Giants team that didn't get in the city until about 2am and was without a red-hot Bonds. Good performance, but it was hardly dominating given the circumstances.

give me a break. just admit that, as of right now, you were dead wrong about him.

Oh, come on. Did you ever admit when he was sporting a 9+ ERA that you were dead wrong about him at that time? He's had a few good games, and some absolutely miserable ones. When he starts putting up numbers like he did today with some sort of consistency, then we'll talk.

Since Hill's second callup:

JUL 27 - 3.1 IP 4 ER

AUG 01 - 8 IP 3 ER

AUG 06 - 7 IP 1 ER

AUG 11 - 4.2 IP 6ER

AUG 15 - 2 IP 0ER (Relief outing)

AUG 21 - 6 IP 2 ER

AUG 26 - 7 IP 1 ER

SEPT 1 - 8 IP 1 ER

6 out of his last 8 games, Hill has been very good.

I don't think abuck's argument was ever, man Rich Hill is pitching great despite his 9+ ERA.

sorta like he's done over the past month plus...a span during which he's been unquestionably the cubs best pitcher? or do we have to dig up the '27 yankees and have him shut them out 12 times?

I'm pretty sure everyone wants Hill to succeed, abuck. You seemingly want him to succeed to show everyone how smart you are.

not at all (though i am, admittedly, very, very smart). i never even said that hill would be good, though i did (and do) think will be successful. my main contention during the million hill arguments that i had was that you couldn't write him of based on his limited starts, which many, many, many people were doing.

Given the amount of flack abuck had gotten up till August, I think abuck has shown a lot of restraint for not having any "I told you so" posts till today.

Then again, we should be giving abuck more flack for just saying he thinks he's very, very smart.

yeah, well, maybe you shouldn't have said that you wished rich hill would go to hell. that wasn't very cool either.

:D

and they weren't even really told you so's. just showing how quickly people's opinions (and a player's performance) can change. i'm sure everyone who said they didn't like hill are glad to see him doing well now. i've been wrong about tons of guys, and i'll be wrong again in the future (despite my immense smartness).

though i do have no problem throwing blatant, obnoxious told you so's at people who definitively wrote hill off after 40 innings (not saying that any of the people i quoted did that)...i'm not above that one bit. there were some pretty annoying "experts" out there right up until august or so. strangely enough, most of those people haven't posted in many hill threads since then.

5 of his last 6 starts have been quality starts (6 or more innings, 3 earned runs or less). He's averaging about 7 innings, barely over 2 earned runs, almost 6 Ks and 2 BBs per outing, despite having his schedule thrown off when our braniac manager decided to bring him on in relief the day before he was scheduled to start, and the shutout relief appearance isn't figured into those numbers. He's had one bad appearance in the last 5 weeks. How much more consistant does he have to be before you'll talk?

Yeah? So? The way he was pitching back then, there's no way he deserved to be pitching in the major leagues. I said it then, and I'll stand by it now.

He had to get something resolved, he went to the minors again, sorted it out, and now he's pitching well and I couldn't be happier.

No need to spoil the mood of the day with obnoxious "told you so" posts.

He didn't sort it out in the Minors. He sorted it out by the Cubs giving him long enough to get over his confidence problems. Ironically, it would have never happened if it weren't for all the injuries and us being out of contention. Us Hill supporters beleived this, the naysayers didn't.

As soon as Rich Hill posts here, I'll worry about it. Until then, don't worry about fighting his battles for him like you're his mother.

There's not a single person here I can think of here that ranted about Hill's terrible pitching in his earlier starts that hasn't at least mentioned that it looks like they might be wrong now and that they're enjoying Hill's success. Yet despite that, there are still posters here who feel the inexplicable obligation to be as obnoxious as possible towards OTHER POSTERS here simply because they didn't jump to the same conclusion. If people were being stubborn in admitting they were wrong, hey, alright, I could kind of see the point. But hardly anyone is doing that...quite the opposite, in fact. Hill is doing well...great! People admitted they were wrong...great! People harping on other posters for not liking Hill earlier...pretty unecessary. Especially since we've now seen it from the same posters multiple times now. You made your point, we were wrong, we've mostly conceded to it very happily, now move on.

Us Hill supporters beleived this, the naysayers didn't.

So what? That somehow magically gives you permission to continually and childishly snipe at other posters who have since happily and repeatedly said how wrong they were?

It appears Hill may be getting over the mental barrier of thinking a perfect is necessary to get Major League hitters out. He's trusting his stuff and going after hitters instead of reacting to them, I too, was guilty of thinking he'll be AAAA pitcher because, I thought he'd never overcome the mental pratfalls of the game. There are many other LHP's with lesser stuff, such as his mound opponent yesterday, Lowry, who are effective, no reason Hill can't accomplish the same.

I think the sniping can stop. The important thing, as I see it, is that most people seem to believe in Hill now. What they thought three months ago isn't really important.

What makes you think that he doesn't?

In theory, any public figure/famous person in the world could post here. Do we keep that in mind and ban making any disparaging comments about them?

Posted

the point of abuck's statements, which i don't have a problem with at all, were to show that many advocated his departure from the team prematurely, even when he had showed so much promise in the minor leagues.

no one wanted to give the kid enough time to show that he has some big league stuff--which is very apparent now.

you can't just bring a guy up and expect him to have success--which is exactly what prior and wood had when they came up. few of you have patience with young pitching. it's like, if they aren't phenoms right away we should sack them, and if they're past phenoms, we should sack them for no other reason than they dissapointed us by not being superhuman forever and all of the time.

My post really didn't have anything to do about discouraging comments about players in the event that they post on the site. I was just curious as to how you were sure that Rich doesn't post on or view the site.

Posted

I never said he doesn't view it, I simply said he doesn't post on it. Like I said, he doesn't post here, or in the off chance he does, he doesn't make it known who he actually is. Anyone could be simply viewing this site...that shouldn't make the use of outrageous hyperbole somehow off limits because of the slim chance that the famous/public figure it's about might be peeping in.

My basic point is me making ridiculous comments about Rich Hill doesn't suddenly open me up to continual snarky and borderline insulting comments from other posters who are not Rich Hill.

You think his confidence problems were gonna be sorted out by being a TERRIBLE pitcher in the majors? That's WHY he went down to AAA was to give him a bit of a boost mentally and remind him of his past success. It's not like he was making just okay starts and then we're clamoring for him to get fired. He was BAD. Bad like a tuna cassarole left too long in the sun. How the hell is that going to solve his confidence problems? You leave him in there too long and it destroys what he has left of his confidence.

You can try and make it an "us vs. them" thing, but all it does it make you look petty. We're all Cubs fans. I've never wanted Hill to do anything but kick butt. But whatever makes you sleep better at night...
