wow, i didn't realize he was only at 66 pitches. boy, taking him out was stupid especially considering how bad the pen has been.

lou has been really bad lately.

66 pitches and he took him out? wow, that worked out great. Lou has said the right things but he hasn't followed through. He is just a tad bit better than Dusty and that isn't saying much.

I just looked at the box score and started scrambling to find out if he got hurt. What's the deal with yanking him so early?

His spot in the order came up in a scoreless game with a man in scoring position and 2 outs, so he got lifted for Ward, who lined out softly to Kent.

1st and 3rd with 2 outs, top 7th in a 0-0 ballgame and Hill due up. Ward PH.

I'd rather stick with a pitcher who is rolling than put in a batter who has at best a 1 in 3 chance of getting the run in.

Most would considering the situation. Lou has such an itchy trigger finger. Hill was pretty much dealing.

Great to see Hill bounce back like this. I don't care how people try and spin it, Lou taking Hill out when he did was just stupid. It wasn't the end of the game, let your ace who is basically cruising keep on dominating. Maybe if there was someone on 3rd with only 1 or 0 outs, but a guy on 3rd and 2 outs? Come on, Lou. You know how bad this bullpen can be. Stick with the hot hand and gamble (I know, horrible odds) that one of these bi-polar bats suddenly comes to life.

if it were zambrano and his 5+ era, he would have definitely went back out there.

maybe lou wants to save hill for relief duty this week b/c, as we know, when the pen does something wrong, a completely unrelated player is demoted.

they should have just left hill in the game...i'll take hill in a scoreless game hitting than anybody in that bullpen (except wuertz) in a 1 run game...so he doesn't drive in a run pry...but he would be in when it was 1-0 and ethier never hits

o well...hindsights 20-20 and this team and division sucks

I heard that Lou is so mad at Eyre that he's sending Guzman to Iowa and calling Miller up. :D

Z also hits .250 with some power, where Hill hits .048...i'm not trying to defend the decision to take out Hill, just saying thats why Z would stay in.

Wow, I was worried about an injury when I saw the box score and 66 pitches too. What the hell, Lou.

Lou seems to fear extra innings. With this bullpen I can almost understand that. Still, I was pissed that Hill came out having only thrown 66 pitches.

* Well, I guess it's better than tacking 130+ on his arm like dusty would have done.

another nice outing for rich today... 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. Still a very impressive ERA and WHIP, though his W-L is only .500. You can chalk that up to offensive and bullpen ineptitude.

I've always thought that when a pitcher makes the error, the following unearned runs should really be charged as earned runs.

Someone mentioned this in the game thread. I think ERA is and should be a pitching statistic, not pitching + fielding.

While I agree with that, is there a stat for pitchers that combines ERA, pitcher errors and pitcher offensive output? I don't know how it would be done, but it could be interesting.

If that doesn't make sense, I'm trying to ask if Pitcher A puts up a 4.00 era but hits 6 homeruns, is he more effective than Pitcher B that has a 3.75 era but no hits all season or Pitcher C with a 3.75 era but tons of errors?

I don't know, I think it would be interesting and could be a nice way of measuring overall effectiveness as a baseball player, not necessarily as a pitcher.

well, they aren't. era is a measure of a guy's pitching ability, not his fielding ability. i don't really understand why everyone gripes about this rule. the reasoning behind it is pretty obvious. you don't subtract points from a fielder's batting average because he makes an error.

hill's hot start had me thinking he had a shot at the ASG...but his w/l record is likely to keep him out of it. a couple of his patented 13-14 strikeout games would help his cause.

Well, I'm probably in the minority but I feel that when the pitcher commits the error, he "earns" the run. Either way, it's just my opinion.

As for the bolded part... patented? He's never done that before in the majors. I'd let him do it at least a few times (heck, even once) before we start calling it patented.

I think the problem with that is that by far the most important thing a pitcher does is pitch. Pitching is 80% or more of what a pitcher does while defense and offense make up the other 20%. A pitcher may have 3 or 4 ABs in a game at most and an average of 2 or 3 defensive chances per game, while he throws to probably 80+ pitches to 20+ batters. The difference in pitchers offensively and defensively is not going to make up much of any difference in them in pitching.

geez...how about 10 strikeouts? he's done that a few times...will that work for you?
