One of the biggest reasons why the Yankees are hated outside New York is that people see them as just "buying" their players, and putting little emphasis in player development. They exist in a huge media market, and obviously have more money than any other team in baseball. They can splurge and outbid for top-notch talent.

Now consider if the Cubs did this for one year. Would you care if the Cubs just outbid everyone in the free agent market to sign high priced players to possibly form a championship caliber team? Or would you think that such an idea is unfathomable since it would make the Cubs no better than those damn Yankees?

I don't think a high payroll dictates any less satisfaction from a fan's standpoint, or at least it shouldn't. Even with a much higher payroll, a team still has to have a good philosophy, players performing beyond expectation, lack of serious injuries, and some luck.

Nope. You want the talent, you either spend years developing it or you go out and buy it. Sure, you can pull off "blockbuster" trades here and there, but the rest, for better or for worse, is the name of the game now.

I don't care if the trib paid off the other teams to lose vs. us! Give us a ring dammit!!!!

Agreed.

How pathetic is it that I'm 25 years old and highly doubtful I'll see the Cubs win the World Series before I die?

I have no confidence in this organization to be able to "buy" the right players to win a championship.

Exactly.

They spent 95 Million on a bottom 5 team in baseball.

Pathetic.

After 98 years without a championship, and 30 years of my lifetime (22 watching them) without a championship, I want to see them BUILD a team and minor league system that is constantly competitive.

It's taken this long to do it, why not do it right?

Unfortunately, I'm beginning to lose faith in Hendry as having any ability to do this. The minor league system has started to decay after it looked so promising when he took over as GM. Hendry's time as GM is starting to eerily mirror that of MacPhail (with the abberation being 2003).

If a fan from a smaller market team came up and told me that we might not have won the title if we just didn't have the money to buy everyone in sight, I would agree with them. I'd still happily take that bargain though and take the title :D

How do you explain hatred of other teams? Most people that were Yankee haters hated the Yankees before their payroll exceeded 100M or did not have the highest payroll in the league. Their spending sprees over the past decade have just added fuel to the fire.

It wouldn't bother me a bit if the Cubs "bought" a WS instead of going through a season of playing mediocre rookies.

But the Yankees have shown that it doesn't really work all that well. You just end up overpaying and getting stuck in bad contracts.

Come to think of it, Hendry would be perfect for this strategy.

Hatred of the Yankees and their resources date back to 1920's and their purchase of Babe Ruth.

If I had any confidence that the Cubs could develop a mainly home-grown team that would contend for years (much like we were fooled into thinking we had after 2003) I'd prefer that. However, since my confidence in their ability to do so is approximately zero I'm in the anyway they can win camp.

I can't speak for that -- I've only been around since the 70's.

But you did speak to that. That is why I corrected you.

I thought we were discussing current haters, not my deceased ancestors.

the yankees are hated more for winning all the time than they are for their spending. no one would care how much they spent if they never won. that and for their oversized bandwagon.

Then you need to be more precise with your use of the Queen's English, no?

Say what you will, but they always find the postseason, and they'll probably win their division this year as well.

Come to think of it, how many of the Yankees starters came up through their system?

Jeter

Wang

Cano

Cabrera

Basically would we want to be like the Marlins team that won the WS in the 90s, or continue to be the Cubs?

I'd take this organization buying a ring, no questions asked.

Let me get this straight, the choices are spend $200 million and win the World Series or spend $110 million and continue fighting for 5th place in the weakest division in baseball. I think I'll pick the former.

Maybe this year will be different, but they've yet to show that spending the extra money actually works. That's what happens when you're stuck paying the Randy Johnsons of the world $15+ million a year.

And practically speaking, if a team tries to buy a championship in a single season, the odds are that they'll not only fail, but that they'll have to drastically cut payroll for several seasons and go into rebuilding mode.
