Now I'm starting to get beyond my depth here. Can someone explain this like I'm 5?

somebody else can but UEFA is the European federation, in charge of the Champions League. Their participants take part in the FIFA elections and they don't think the vote for Blatter should take place on Friday.

Ok, I think I had all that. It was the congress part that confused me. Does that just mean that if they don't move the election, that they'll abstain?

The western part of UEFA members weren't going to vote for Blatter anyway, and Russia will ignore any boycott and vote for Blatter.

Presumably they will not participate, or effectively abstain. With normal situations this would create a perception problem where a leader would not have the support to maintain control, but Sepp and Fifa don't operate normally. This would reduce the quorum but probably increase his percentage of the votes, and that would make him happy.

My guess is Blatter has the votes in the bag and doesn't give a [expletive] about what UEFA thinks.

Blatter's support base is CAF and all the smaller FA's around the world. England and most of the other western UEFA countries already hate him. UEFA has been pushing for a postponement in the election for weeks, so this isn't necessarily news.

Add to that fact that Platini was likely the biggest backer of the 2022 bid amongst UEFA members (his son magically got named as president of some Qatari company afterward) and I'm not sure how much weight that pronouncement means.

Today’s events are a disaster for FIFA and tarnish the image of football as a whole.

UEFA is deeply shocked and saddened by them.

These events show, once again, that corruption is deeply rooted in FIFA’s culture.

There is a need for the whole of FIFA to be “rebooted” and for a real reform to be carried out.

The upcoming FIFA Congress risks to turn into a farce and therefore the European associations will have to consider carefully if they should even attend this Congress and caution a system, which, if it is not stopped, will ultimately kill football.

The UEFA member associations are meeting tomorrow ahead of the FIFA Congress. At that point, the European associations will decide on what further steps need to be taken to protect the game of football.

In the meantime, the members of the UEFA Executive Committee are convinced that there is a strong need for a change to the leadership of this FIFA and strongly believe that the FIFA Congress should be postponed, with new FIFA presidential elections to be organised within the next six months.

I love Blatter saying he is not responsible for the corruption, but yet he is sure more bad news will follow in the coming months.

U20's opened with a 2-1 win over Maynmar. Probably should have been by more. Conditions weren't great with a lot of rain. Looked a little sloppy in the 2nd half.

Italy going back to the 2002 WC and FIFA fixing the officiating that cup. I forgot how bad the SK-Italy match was.

SK-Spain was just as bad also. I remember there being at least one and I think two clear cut goals for Spain disallowed for no reason.

Back to back FA Cups and improvements in the league. Maybe Arsenal can have a chance next year.

Glad Arsenal won because now Southampton gets stuck in the Europa sinkhole (assuming they win the qualifying rounds).

This has probably been covered at some point in the 700+ pages of this thread, but I'm not about to go looking for it.

I've always followed soccer a bit at world cup time, but I'd like to get into the sport a lot more. I watched a bit of EPL last Sunday, and some MLS over the weekend. Are you guys Fire fans? What EPL teams are you fans of? I enjoyed watching random games over the weekend, but I need to invest in some teams to really get sucked in.

I found some old Bill Simmons article where he was looking for an EPL team, and he settled on Tottenham. I like the idea of a team that is consistently not in danger of relegation, but also isn't a team that isn't just buying the best players all the time, so I'm leaning towards them at the moment, but I'm not committed.

My avatar gives away the team I actively support.

In all other games I just want to see good play. 8-)
