On the flip side, teams eliminated...

UEFA: Spain, Italy, England, Croatia, Portugal, Bosnia-Herzegovina and maybe Russia

CAF: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon and maybe Algeria

AFC: Australia, Japan, Iran and likely South Korea

CONMEBOL: Ecuador

CONCACAF: Honduras

Maybe this should be in the "Gam" thread, but how are the number of spots in the World Cup by geography assigned? I assume it has something to do with world rankings, but does it change ever?

It's pretty much just assigned randomly by FIFA according to relative strength of each federation, with the host federation usually picking up a freebie. They've lately been splitting bids between federations and having a playoff for the final couple spots, and this cycle there was a CONCACAF-OFC split (Mexico-New Zealand) and a CONMEBOL-AFC split (Uruguay-Jordan).

Things just got interesting.

Korea needs to beat Belgium by one more goal than Russia beats Algeria to advance.

Also, if Algeria and Korea win, Algeria wins the group and Belgium is second.

Algeria would love a piece of us. We could be their Ghana if we knock them out again.

They deserve it for bunkering for a useless draw in 2010.

Tough spot for Algeria here. They know if they can get a goal and Korea gets one, they'll win the group. But if they give one up, they're out.

Russia is going to press no matter what, they just need to counter.

What do you mean "again"? Back in 2010, it seems like they would have had to win by 2 goals after England went up 1-0 on Slovenia early in the game. They were not in a true "win and you're in" situation.
