So Aron and JAB start both matches in October now?

The Panama game is going to be an exercise in "Don't get hurt, Don't get a 2nd yellow", so definitely that one at least.

I didn't think yellows carried over to the WC.

Random thought, if there was no Messi or Ronaldo where would we rank van Persie in the greatest strikers in the world right now.

Up to date Hex standings:

USA - Qualified, 16 pts

Costa Rica - Qualified, 15 pts

Honduras, 11 pts, 0 GD, 10 GF

Panama, 8 pts, -2 GD, 7 GF

Mexico, 8 pts, -2 GD, 4 GF

Jamaica, 4 pts, -6 GD

That's right, Mexico is currently in 5th. Worst of all, they're already in trouble in a potential tiebreaker, because the odds of them winning the 2nd tiebreaker on goals scored is impossibly slim.

Games left:

Jamaica @ USA

Panama @ Mexico

Costa Rica @ Honduras

Honduras @ Jamaica

USA @ Panama

Mexico @ Costa Rica

The biggest of these is pretty easily Panama @ Mexico. It's the only game left between two teams with something to play for(unless you think Jamaica is going to win on US soil), and quite honestly, Mexico needs to win. Another draw leaves their playoff hopes up to getting a better result than Panama when both are playing teams with nothing to play for, with Panama playing the superior team at home. Lose to Panama and it's over barring some 2010 Confed Cup level stuff.

During the Besler outrage on Twitter I saw mention that if you get your 2nd yellow in the final qualifier you're suspended for the first WC game. I might be wrong.

Some fun Chicharito statistics:

- Chicharito had nine touches in the first half, 10 fewer than any other player.

- By the 55th minute, that was up to 11 touches. That's not completed passes, or dribbles, or won headers ... just "touches."

- He completed 10 passes and missed on eight.

DOS A CERO!!!

Is it wrong that I was hoping Clint would miss the PK solely to keep the 2-0 scoreline?

Also, I love the possibility of us controlling Mexico's destiny in the last game of qualifying.

Great angle of Johnson's goal that makes you wonder how Corona thought that ball would ever get to him.

Yeah, just a terrible play by the GKer.

He played that like the rest of the team either being scared of being run over or just didn't care. That was a HS goalie mistake.

I'm still in a good mood today. Fascinating to think how much most of us wanted Jurgen gone 7 months ago. He's made some great in game adjustments the past 4 months.

He's still prone to over thinking and tinkering with starting lineups and putting players out of position when first choice players are unavailable, but he's earned enough credit to get away with it for now. As long as our first choice team is available, he seems to have found a consistent lineup.

USA is now 13th in the latest FIFA rankings. Mexico down to 21st.

Almost time to start thinking about seeds and a draw again. Would be awesome if somehow Iceland qualified and we could get stuck in a group with them and Iran.

I don't see Columbia or Belgium pulling off #1 seeds and getting in a group with them would really suck unless they are #1 seeds. Outside of that I would take a group with Italy or Uruguay as a #1 seed.

Want nothing to do with Argentina or Brazil, would take Spain, Germany or Holland over them. Despite the ranking I don't see Holland not as a #1 seed.

The USMNT isn't getting a seed. Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Germany and Italy are locked in for sure, and Netherlands/Colombia/Belgium/Uruguay/Portugal are likely in line ahead of the US at this point.

Among those teams, aside from hoping we only get 1 of them, I'd take anyone not CONMEBOL, basically. I want no part of a South American team in the group stage, and if the US can somehow avoid that, they're in good shape. Well, I guess no to Brazil, Argentina, Colombia or Uruguay. Ecuador and Chile I'd prefer not, but it would beat a Germany/Netherlands group I suppose.

EDIT: Of course, saying all that, I fully expect them to end up in a group with Germany, Egypt, and Netherlands/Belgium, in the "kill me now" group.

Good as this team may be, Belgium's ranking is too high. I'd put them in the 10-15 range myself.

So I agree with you - I'd be very surprised if Belgium got a #1 seed.

Obviously, as soon as those rankings came out, the topic of WC seeding was discussed in the local media, with their focus on how late the seeding would be decided. I'm guessing there will be a lot of behind the scenes discussions at FIFA if those rankings hold.

So I'm looking for good soccer podcasts. Any suggestions?

Depends on your area of interest but these are the two I listen to.

Men in Blazers

5 Live Football Daily

I second Men in Blazers (though it's only a weekly pod). Those guys are hilarious.

They focus on the EPL and the US men's national team along with a little Champions League later in the season or if there's a notable result in the group stage.

So Fifa might now investigate the Besler yellow and CR antics before the US game.

Costa Rican Football Federation official Juan Carlos Roman told Al Día that the Ticos could be forced to play their next home World Cup qualifier, against Mexico on Oct. 15, before an empty stadium as punishment.

Cool. So we're helping out Mexico now. Okay then.
