But I thought they were looking for bullpen help?

They're going for quantity over quality.

Either that, or the lightning in a bottle approach patented by our beloved team. He had a fluke year in 2005 with a 3.32 ERA (his career stats, both minor and major, would indicate that it was a fluke), so I'm guessing they're hoping he'll suddenly be good enough to replicate that with them because he's done it once before.

I hope you were being sarcastic. Cause I seriously doubt that Hendry would had recieved either Jay Bruce/Homer Bailey for Eyre or Howry or anybody in the org (not name Lee or Ramirez).

I was exaggerating, but I still believe Hendry should have got involved if the Reds are giving up solid players for bullpen help.

All I saw was that they gave up a PTBNL for Schoenwise...who's the solid players they gave up?

Okay, I'm sorry but I can't take it anymore. Listening to Cubs fans make fun of someone else's GM is like listening to William Shatner criticize someone else's singing. It's hilarious. Especially when the GM in question has taken a team EVERYONE picked for last place and made them contenders without even the benefit of an offseason. I'd be happy to provide justification for all the moves Krivsky has made if anyone wants to hear it, but the short version is that they really really need pitching.

Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez for middle relievers....GO!

How dare you make fun of our hero Jim Hendry.

Relax, this thread is tame.

Besides, William Shatner is very underrated as a musician! :)

Okay, then.

First, they're both starting to become pricey. Next, the thing that each provided best -- Lopez' leadoff skills and Kearns' defense -- was easily and cheaply replaced by Ryan Freel. Their offense hasn't suffered one bit since the trade; in fact they now have a more or less set lineup for the first time in years. The point here is that as good as the two players were, they could easily afford to give them up. And considering the fact that Krivsky has spent all season tirelessly dumpster-diving and turning over rocks to add players, it seems unlikely that he passed up Johan Santana to get Majewski and Bray. Bottom line is that it was the best he could do. I'm sure he would have liked more, but nobody was offering more.

The guys he did get haven't helped much yet this year, admittedly. But they're both young and cheap and the trade was designed to help solidify the bullpen for years to come. Whether or not they will do that remains to be seen, but I do know that they see Bray as a strong closer candidate whose "makeup is off the charts", whatever that means. What I like about Krivsky is that he immediately identified his team's weakness (pitching) and is absolutely determined to improve it any way he possibly can. As a Cub fan, I would be pretty happy if Hendry started behaving that way. That's all I'm really saying.

It was one of the worst trades in recent memory.

In brief: Kearns was the 4th best OFFENSIVE RF at the time of the trade, nevermind his defense. Lopez, even though his numbers were down from last year, was the 6th best offensive shortstop in the NL. Neither will be a free agent until 2008.

In return, the Reds get a reliever with a 4.87 ERA. And he's hurt. And a guy with a 4.12 ERA. And a defensive shortstop who's actually a below average defender. Other than that, it was peachy.

If Krivsky actually had any guts, he would have tried to trade Junior Griffey instead.

As someone rooting for the Reds to overtake the Cardinals, I was disgusted by the trade.

That Kearns trade was so SHORT-SIGHTED, that it could had easily been confused with the Cubs.

I am going to say that next yr, because of this trade, will be back down near the cellar of the NL Central, seeing as they STILL didn't address their pitching. Getting Bray was nice for Cincy, but for Kearns/Lopez? I don't know, Kravisky definately tooka big gamble, and ultimately I believe he made the wrong move.

All right; I give up. You guys win. It was a horrible trade, and Krivsky is a horrible GM. I guess those poor Reds fans will just have to wipe their tears with playoff tickets.

Yes, cause that trade is totally why they're in the playoff race.

The Cubs could easily afford to sign Dusty Baker to a 10 year $50 million contract, that doesn't make it a smart move.

No, but that GM definitely is. And if they don't make the playoffs, it won't be because they don't have Lopez and Kearns.

If you're dying of thirst in the desert, and someone offers you an ice cold water bottle for $100, is it a dumb move to "overpay"?

In this case it's more like brine than ice water.

Not if there's a guy two feet away who will set it to you for $5.

I'll be happy to sell you my Reds playoff tickets at 3x face value.
