Hot as a firecracker

Before you read the quote, just note this little fact. Since the all star break, Neifi Perez is hitting .255/.250/.298.

Now for the quote:

Asked before the game to pinpoint the main reason for the Cubs resurgence, Baker pointed to the offense.

"If you have got (Matt) Murton, (Angel) Pagan, Aramis (Ramirez), Jacque, Michael Barrett, Juan Pierre and Neifi (Perez) hot … if you get guys hot, you're going to win," Baker said.

Yeah, the reason the Cubs have been winning is in part due to the fact that Neifi is scorching. While that 548 OPS might actually seem hot for Neifi, it actually isn't. Dusty's quote either means he doesn't know what hot means, has extremely low expecations for Neifi Perez that would mean a 548 OPS was hot, or he's just dumb as a box of rocks and doesn't know jack squat about baseball. The only other explanation is that he's got an unjustified man love for Neifi Perez and felt obligated to include him in a list of players that actually have been producing lately. It's not like he included everybody in the list, guys like Mabry and Nevin weren't included, not to mention Ronny, whose post ASB OPS is 096 points higher than Neifi's.

Oh, by the way, Jacque's line post all star: .229/.273/.398.

Ramirez, Barrett and Murton are legitimately hot, with 1000+ OPS since the ASB. Pagan is pretty good with a 859, which is very similar to Nevin and Mabry.

Speaking of streaking.

Post ASB, Juan Pierre is hitting .280/.330/.410, a respectable line for a bench player, or 7 hole hitting rookie making $350,000. But hardly anything you'd like to see from your everday leadoff hitter, not to mention a guy making millions who is thought to be in line for a 3/$24-30m deal in the offseason. His overall line still sucks, .276/.323/.372, and that hot July is a thing of the past. Juan is going to finish the season with bad numbers, there is simply nothing more to say about that fact. The only hope is that Hendry judges him on some random stat like runs scored, which the every single freaking game in the leadoff spot Pierre is on pace for a measly 80, a truly pathetic total. 2005 Cubs leadoff hitters scored more than that. 5 NL teams have already scored more than that from the leadoff spot.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......Dusty, you fool.

Jacque Jones and Neifi Perez have been even worse then their abysmal career numbers.

While I want no part of Neifi, Jones hasn't been horrible.

Stats:

AVG .288 | HR 18 | RBI 55 | OBP .321 | SLG .499

Baker was talking about recent numbers, during the team's improved play. And recently Jones has been horrible, slowing eating away at those mediocre season numbers, bringing them back in-line with his mediocre career.

Right, he hasn't been horrible over the season (though not good either), but I was referring to his recent past (as I believe Dusty was).

I tend to agree with you on Pierre. If he's asking anywhere near 7-9 million a year, then forget it. Save the cash...He's 10th in the NL in OBP.

Their starting pitchers have been much better. Anyone else notice that the number of games where the Cubs are behind 7-0 before the fifth inning has been declining?

it's those darn rookie pitchers that poor dusty has been complaining about. during the 11-4 run...

hill, marmol, mateo: 5-1

z, prior, rusch: 3-3

It's really been the entire pitching staff with the exception of Rusch. If you look, all 5 of them have had 1-2 good starts with mostly 1 bad start in there (except for Mateo, who's only had 1 start). In fact though, the pitching staff hasn't been great as a whole during that stretch. They have over a 5 ERA during that 14 game stretch-it's the offense that has scored 5.14 runs a game over the last 14 that has really helped.

He's 10th in the NL in OBP.

You really should qualify that better - he's 10th in the NL in OBP among qualified CF's. If he were 10th in the NL, we'd be very happy with his .398 OBP. Unfortunatley for us, ol 43 is 74th in the NL in OBP. That's simply horrific for a lead-off hitter.

Ok, he's 10th out of 16 teams in the NL. That doesn't sound any better does it?

That still sucks, you know. That puts him in the bottom half of leadoff hitters at 10th out of 16. And 74th overall is terrible.

His original post said that for the contract Pierre wants to get rid of him because he is 10th in the NL in OBP-he didn't mean it as a positive stat for him.

Sorry, but those numbers suck for a RFer in my opinion. 55rbis? Jeez that's terrible.

We're a pretty knowledgable crew here, so let's not fall into the Hendry-Baker trap of the "prototypical leadoff-hitter." Leadoff hitter is not a position. Why a player with no objective value (Pierre) is coveted because he bats leadoff is ridiculous. The Cubs would score more runs with almost any other center fielder. Why get hung up on batting order? Lead off Murton for Pete's sake. Hope the Cards don't exercise their option on Edmonds and offer him a one-year contract for absolutely ridiculous money. We'll still be better off.
