OUCH! Had to figure something was wrong the way he got beat up yesterday, after missing his last start. Even as a fan of the team that has gotten very little from comparable talent the last 2 years, I don't wish this on one of the great young pitchers of the game.

Wow this is a terrible blow for the Twins. That just sucks.

I hate to see young pitchers get taken out due to injuries. Especially ones as talented as Liriano. Was this overuse you think or just a problem that would happen anyway?

Actually, the Twins say it is the forearm, not the elbow. It is a muscle issue.

Yeah, I was going to say after reading the article, Gardenhire specifically said that it was not the elbow. Change the thread title so people like me don't get unnecessarily scared.

Please call him up:

With Francisco Liriano (forearm) injured, the Twins may call Matt Garza up from Triple-A.

The Twins have done every they can to keep Garza in the minors, but at this point they've run out of other options. "I saw him in Double-A; I saw his debut," general manager Terry Ryan said. "I was concerned maybe we pushed him hard. He proceeded to strike out 13 in front of my eyes." Garza immediately becomes a must-grab in AL-only leagues and has huge keeper-league potential.

Hmm...where have I heard the "It's not the elbow, we swear" excuse before?

No way. Liriano didn't get dusty'd. He was averaging 93.5 pitches/game started.

Which goes to show you there is no way to fully protect a pitcher...

so you should just have them throw 150 pitches per start because they could end up getting hurt anyway.

Where in my post did I say that?

More Garza love:

In fact, farm director Jim Rantz can only remember one other player who started out in Fort Myers and made it to the big leagues in one season--slugger David Ortiz--who accomplished it in 1997.

And that's saying something, considering Rantz has been a mainstay in Minnesota's organization since 1965, serving as farm director since 1986.

"I'll take that one step further," Rantz said. "Garza's the only pitcher we've had to make the Florida State League all-star team, get called up to Double-A and pitch in that all-star game, then head to Triple-A since Scott Baker did it two years ago."

Can't wait till Friday! :)
