Manager Dusty Baker said he plans to keep batting Izturis and his career .295 OBP in the second spot in the order. That gives Izturis additional value in NL-only leagues, but it's sure not going to help the Cubs' playoff chances.

We had Izturis' clone in the 2 hole all through the 2005 season and the results were terrible. It cost DLee a shot at the MVP. It sure will be fun having Izzy in the 2 hole for all of 2007. May as well eliminate DLee from MVP consideration right now.

When I went to the Dodgers game, he was rightfully batting 8th. Why can't Dusty just think for a minute?

On a lighter note, my cousins here* were really upset to hear that Izzy was traded!

My 9 year old cousin: He's the best shortstop in the National League!

Jim Hendry? Is that you?

*I'm still in LA for the summer

He's oddly popular amongst Dodger fans.

Izturis is a 8 hitter in a good lineup. The Cubs dont have a good lineup, so they have to put Iztruis in the 2 hole. If Hendry adds some bats in the off-season, then Izturis will be moved to the 8 hole. For now he will be in the 2 hole.

That's the biggest load of crap I've heard in quite some time. They have to put a terrible hitter in the 2 spot? The only way he doesn't bat 2nd next year is if a competent manager is hired. If Dusty is back, he'll have his double leadoff combo again.

That's what I'm thinking-the quote doesn't necessarily mean that Izturis will be in the 2 spot next season any more tham it is assured that Cedeno will be at second next season or that all the young pitchers will be in the rotation. I like Izturis in the 2 spot for this season-the more at-bats we give him in the next 2 months, the more of an idea of how healthy he is and what he will do when healthy-we can probably almost triple his number of at-bats for the season.

Uhh.... given the current roster, Murton makes a much better option for the 2-hole. I don't see that changing next year -- Murton will still be a better choice than Neifi or Izturis in 2007 too.

Murton dosent hit enough to stay in the lineup everyday. He is more of a 4th outfielder on the Cubs.

If Murton doesn't hit enough to play everyday, what do Cedeno, Perez, Izturis and Mabry do?

The only reason Mabry is starting is because Lee is hurt. Like I said before, Izturis is in the lineup for his glove, and should be used in the 8 hole. You can get by with Izturis in your lineup if you have a solid lineup. The only reason Cedeno plays everyday is because he was the only SS on the roster. Perez starts because he was a better option than Walker, according to Baker.

Can you please explain this? How can the #2 spot in the lineup hit three times as often as the #8 spot?

Quality of hitters on the Cubs active roster:

1) Ramirez

2) Barrett (I could buy him at #1, but I believe ARam is a better hitter overall)

-- gap --

3) Murton

4) Jones

-- gap --

everyone else.

Sure. I meant that he will get more at-bats in the 2 spot than in the 8th spot. The reference to tripling his at-bats was that he only has had 123 AB's after his injury this season-we should be able to almost triple that number of at bats if we start him the rest of the season, and especially if we get the few extra plate appearances that the top of the order gets. 350 at bats gives us a lot clearer picture of what he can do when healthy in 2007 than 123 does.

You didn't answer the question. Mabry is worse offensively than Nevin. Perez is worse than Cedeno, but really all 3 of the middle IF are bad. Murton is better offensively than any of them by miles, and plays a position where defense matters very little. So please explain your logic.

And yeah, if you had a good offense Izturis could hit 8th. So could Perez or Cedeno. Do we have a good offense? No, not even close. Will a good winter bring us a good offense? Unlikely. We will be fortunate to land one of Soriano or Lee, and even if we do land one of them, we still won't be a good offense. The best we could hope for is a redux of 2004, where we slug but can't get on base, and have a very inconsistent offense.

The interesting thing is that Pierre and Murton's numbers are getting closer and closer. They might actually be very similar by the end of the year-not sure about and predictive value that might have, just an observation.

The average and the extra base power have been pretty similar. However, Murton separates himself quite a bit with 28 walks in 281 AB's, while Pierre is at 24 in 447.

Gotcha. I read that as we'd get him 3 times the number of at bats from here out in the #2 slot compared to #8. Which is obviously impossible.

I'd also like to get a large number of AB's to Ronnie from here on out to see what we've got in him and if he can adjust to what the league is doing to him. His avg and obp have gone down each and every month of the season. I would like to see him out there each and every single day, get him the reps and see if he can turn it around by the end of the year. If not, then we know we need a new 2B for next year.

I think we can be pretty certain that Jim's going to stick with Izzy, given his excitement about getting him in the first place.

I would definitely agree with that-we need to know what we have in Cedeno, and we have to play him everyday to figure that out-so if he's not what we're looking for we don't spend 2007 figuring that out. For the rest of this season, I hope that we see Izturis and Cedeno at shortstop and second.
