DiamondJaxx.com[/url]"]Pavlik got the start for Juan Mateo, who was called up to Chicago after the game. Mateo will be pitching for the Cubs out of the bullpen.

Not what I was expecting when I read the Ron's DJaxx game summary...

Thanks.

What do you make of this? I mean, we have Guzman and Ryu in AAA after cups of coffee up here earlier this season. I have never heard Mateo mentioned as a potential helper to the Big Club (at least not in 06') until now. Makes me wonder what value the org. puts on Ryu and Guzman at this point.

As luck would have it, I had the pleasure of watching Juan M. start for the DJaxx vs. Montgomery Biscuits Thurs. July 20 2006. What I saw, looked to me like the performance of a very strong prospect, winning another game for the DJaxx. I saw exactly what one would expect, given his career AA stats -- good control, few walks, several strikeouts. I figured I would eventually see this guy at wrigley someday. I don't know what problem the neurotic Cardinals had with this guy -- I would guess the dirty Cards will be proven wrong in their negative judgement, shortly. Overpowering stuff at the MLB level? I can't judge that. But too good for AA, so give it your best shot Juan.

Someone else (Guzman?) will have to be called up to start Thursday since Rusch pitched in relief tonight. Mateo may be up just for a couple of days as insurance.

What the...?!

Why Mateo? I'm sure he shows promise, but I mean....there are plently in line in front of him...

There were plenty in front of Marmol. And look how that turned out.

Wow. I guess this is one of those, "fresh face" moves, Cubs must have just wanted someone that hasn't had a chance yet to get a shot. Mateo has pitched well enough to earn a taste of the big leagues, though.

BTW, I'm annoyed by the number of spelled-out numbers in that second paragraph. I count seven spelled out numbers in the paragraph two alone, at least there are zero in paragraph one.

How soon til Marshall is ready to pitch? I bet Mateo is here for less than a week, and probably won't pitch. That's not necessarily bad.

I heard a couple of weeks on the telecast over the weekend, but I can't find anything concrete.

what's there not to like about Mateo? His numbers have been great for a couple years. Had he shown up to camp in shape, he would be with St. Louis now.

Per Ron Potesta:

Mateo throws hard. He's got a fastball in the low-mid 90's, a good slider and a decent change. Of the starting pitchers on the Diamond Jaxx, he was by far the best and most consistent starter. He is very deserving of the promotion and will be put in the bullpen.

Is it possible that he will take Rusch's spot after he is DFA'd?
Maybe in some parallel universe where Rusch actually IS DFA'd. :D

The part where he's probably not ready for the double jump? I'd rather have seen Ryu or Guzman (though I'd guess it looks like Gooz will start on Thursday)

He's a sinkerballer right?
