I'd really like to know who the prospects were that the Cubs were going to get until Izturis suddenly became available. Hendry said a few times that they were High-Level. to me that means they were AAA players but not necessarily high-quality. I guess I just hope that Izturis can still be better offensively given the fact that age is on his side.

During the game Hendry mentioned that getting Izturis gave him a head start on putting the team together for 2007 in order to avoid the situation they are currently in with this craptacular 2006 team.

8:00 AM Saturday morning

Jim: He dude, Maddux said he would like to play in LA, who do you have availible for a trade?

LA GM: Well, Jim, we have a few guys @ LAs Vegas, Joel Guzman or some kid named Either. What do you think about one of those guys?

Jim: Well, I guess I was thinking of someone, well, abit more talented. What about Cesar Izturis? I like him, he can catch the ball. We'll even pick up a good portion of Maddux's salary...

LA GM: (passed out because of sheer surprise. Isnt found until Monday afternoon at 3 pm)

Jim: Hello? Hello? shoot..maybe i asked for too much.....

LA GM Assistant: hey, dude, you ok???

LA GM: (slowly awakes from a 2 day slumber) woa..man..I had the weirdest dream. I had a dream I was talking to Jim Hendry and he wanted to take Izturis off my hands and basically give me Maddux...weird.

LA GM Assistant: Had to have been a dream. Jim isnt that stupid. why is your phone off the hook?

(LA GM and LA GM Assistantglance at eachother)

LAGM: quick, GET JIM ON THE PHONE!!

and the deal is made. seriosly, we got hoodwinked.

To think the Cubs had a shot at Either or Guzman for Maddux is insane.

Someone on this site posted a false rumor, or heard a false rumor that would send LaRoche to the Cubs for Maddux. Now when everyone seen that, they jumped to conclusions. No way in hell would the Dodgers deal LaRoche for Maddux. Lets be realistic in what the Cubs could of have received in return for Maddux.

didn't hendry actually say he could have had a couple of high-level prospects for maddux, but chose izturis instead?

if hendry actually did say that, then people have every right to criticize what he got in return.

Yes, he said it when he was talking to Len and Bob during the game.

I am wondering, but honestly, I am lazy. I keep reading that Hendry gave up the opportunity to get prospects but instead chose Izturis. Rather then read the 50 page Maddux thread, where are people getting this info. I have yet to see any of it substantiated.

Slow down, that never happened.

I took full responsibility for the Maddux for LaRoche thing because I was openly pining for him and never posted any rumors, sources, or whatever that said the Cubs were talking about Maddux for LaRoche. I wanted that trade to happen, despite the incredibly low probability that it would, due to the rumors that Ramirez would opt out and that the Cubs were reportedly looking to trade him.

I never reported it like it was a fact.

Anyone who construed it to be me actually reporting that as a credible rumor is a nitwit.

If im the Dodgers, im not dealing 2 highly regarded prospects for a 40yr old pitcher.

Ignorant statement. I never accused you of anything. Its when some random person post a rumor/ trade they would like to happen, people jump all over it, and begin to think it is possible. Then they get mad, because they think they could of got a highly regarded prospect or two in return for Maddux.

Jim Hendry himself said he could've gotten 2 high level prospects for Maddux, but couldn't pass on Izturis. I don't know what else could qualify as conclusive proof.

According to Hendry, he turned down two "top prospects" from the Dodgers when he realized that he could get Izturis. That is what he said on air with Len and Bob. So obviously Coletti was willing to trade those "top prospects" unless Hendry is lying.

I'm not accusing you of anything; I'm clarifying something you're saying. No one on this board ever posted that the Maddux for LaRoche rumor would happen, to my knowledge.

Jim Hendry said himself that the Cubs could have had a package of highly regarded prospects for Maddux. Considering he came out and actually said it on the game tonight, I'm inclined to believe him.

My guess is that it was two prospects, but not the actual top prospects that everyone has been salivating over. I wouldn't put it past Hendry to stretch the truth to make his move seem better. Sounds like he was just doing a sales pitch to me.

On the other hand, if he really was offered two top prospects or Izturis, he'd be stupid to pick Izturis.

Yep, like I said in a previous post. No way would the Dodgers deal 2 "highly regarded" prospects for a 40yr old pitcher. Im pretty sure Jim would make the best deal for trading Maddux. He stated this several times.

Did you figure in Coletti's serious man-love for Maddux?

I dont think Coletti was banking the rest of his season in a Maddux deal. If he was so desperate for Maddux, then why didnt this move get done weeks ago? If you ask me, Coletti was not desperate for Maddux.

This is the same GM who signed Glendon Rusch and Neifi Perez to multiyear deals, outbid himself this past offseason for guys like Eyre, Howry, and Jones, and was put over a barrel in the Juan Pierre trade because he figured this team desperately needed a stereotypical speedy leadoff hitter despite already having two guys on the team in Murton and Walker who were more than capable of filling that spot.

Needless to say, all of the good will and faith I had in him after the Lee, Ramirez, and Nomar trades has been used up completely.

I never said the highlighted portion. What I'm saying is that it has been reported that he wanted Maddux to be on the team for their playoff run. Buster Olney has said this. It is a known fact he loves Maddux. But, he would have never made the move if they were not making a playoff run.

He did not make any deals before Friday's Betemit trade. So that is when his trading began.

Personally, I think it was a dumb trade for Dodgers in terms of the acquisition but good in terms of losing the contract of Izturis.

Oh, no way. I don't have a link handy, but someone used to have a quote in his sig from Eyre talking about how Eyre had established some ideal terms with his agent and Hendry's offer just blew those away.

As I recall, both Howry and Eyre were surprised at the number of years and contract figures they got from the Cubs. Neither was expecting those kinds of contracts.

I could be mistaken in remembering this and other teams could have thrown comparable contracts at them, but I've seen this particular point brought up often enough by different people to make me believe I'm remembering it correctly.

Heck! Eyre has an NTC. There are elite players without NTCs.

So you payed a couple of extra million for Howry and Eyre. Not a big deal. Im not second guessing those deals. Howry and Eyre are 2 of the best set-up men in the league.

I don't remember Howry, but I remember Eyre's agent was shocked at the deal Hendry offered...Eyre didn't think twice about signing with the Cubs.

I'm happy to have their services and hope they will continue to produce like this during their time on the Cubs.

That said, the fact remains that Hendry outbid himself with both of them.
