I'll say this. Hendry BETTER make Dusty play Fotenot, Theroit, or heck, even Patterson MOST of the rest of the year. Otherwise Dusty will soon find out how many games you can loose when you have Neifi EVERY DAY. . . . . . .. . (ofcourse he won't ever actually figure it out). .

You know he's talking about Eric, right?

...so I assume we are hoping that Ceda could become a valuable middle reliever in the year 2012?

Kid could still be a starter. Innings allocation in rookie ball doesn't mean much.

Brutal trade.

Shove it Hendry, and shove it Cubs.

What a joke. Hendry couldn't give this guy away for the last year, and you're griping about who he got in return? I'm just happy he's gone and Dusty will play Theriot! (Or at least, he [expletive] better...)

Then why in the hell won't you keep him?

What's so wrong with Walker anyways? He bats almost 300 and we're going to play Perez at 2nd.

Give me a break.

No wonder why we're going to lose ninety games this year.

Well then, isn't it time to think about and make trades for the future.

Walker in the future equals nothing. Ceda will likely equal nothing as well, but might equal something. So Hendry trades nothing for a possible something and you throw a fit.

Interesting.

Enjoy watching Neifi play 2nd about everyday then.

Yes, my point is that it would be a big jump and they'll screw Eric up just like Corey if they bring him up.

I've been prepared for this all year. In fact, I expected it prior to the season beginning. But for the life of me, if Neifi is now the everyday 2B, or Hendry/Baker even SAY he's done a good enough job to be an everyday 2B, I'm going to lose it.

And if Neifi is the opening day starting 2B next year, I swear I'm done with the Cubs until both of these cowns (Hendry and Baker) are run out of the organization.

We've complained about their overvaluation of neifi, we've even been chastised by those who think we're making too much of Neifi's presence on the team. But every hypothetical doomsday scenario we've been warning about concerning Neifi for over a year is looking more and more realistic with each passing moronic move Hendry makes.

So, again, it's not that Walker was traded, or that they don't see him as the future 2B for the team that's got me- I like the production he gave us, but am not such a fan of his that I think he's god's gift to the game. It's really my sinking suspicion that Neifi is their guy going forward beyond this year that's getting to me.

Yep. Neifi starting at 2nd from now until the end of 2007 is the odds on favorite result of this deal, by a wide margin.

I'd like to see what Walker gets ranked at the end of the year before I make up my mind about the trade. If he gets an "A" ranking, I wish we would have held on and offered Arby. If he gets a "B" ranking, I'm happy enough with the deal.

I don't think there's anyway he's an "A". He may even be a borderline "B". IIRC, he was a Class "C" FA after the 2004 season.

I wonder if that's due to playing time. His rate numbers certainly rank well with 2b-men. And Elias doesn't consider defense when doing the rankings.

Could be due to PT, but he hasn't had much more the last 2 years due to injury last year and Dusty this year.

OK. I agree that I don't want them rushing Eric.

No I think this signals we will go after Soriano this offseason hard.

This is the scenario. Walker bats well enough to be an "A", but the Neifi love diminished his playing time enough so that he became a borderline "B"/"C".

ESPN.com's player rankings seem to think Todd Walker no longer exists for some reason, but I'd imagine that's the case.

I wonder if you will post anything here when Perez isn't the everyday starter. Is cynicism necessarily paired up with cowardice? I don't think so.

AA to the bigs isn't that big of a jump, and Eric is already older than Corey was at the time of his promotion. In addition to about the same amount of pro at bats, Eric has his college instruction as well. So he should be more seasoned/ready than Corey was. Not to say I'm gung-ho about a call-up.

What? Did you say that Dusty has been responsible for updating 2B player rankings at ESPN.com? :jocolor:

Maybe they'll go hard, but like with most big name free agents, they'll come up short. That will probably be a good thing though as Soriano will get way more money than he should.

I agree on all points, although it is depressing to know Jim will never have the stones to get a great player.

Put me, too, on the list of people who thinks this is a decent pick-up (Neifi ramifications aside). I am pleasantly surprised that they didn't settle for a toolsy Bynum type player or a AA reliever with mediocore peripheals.

The Cubs came out much better on this deal than I thought. There had to have been essentially no market for Walker, and they got a guy with potential, at least.

I'm pleasantly suprised that we got someone who had a ceiling for Walker.

Surprised? Really? All Hendry cares about is ceiling. What he nevers gets is anybody capable of reaching their ceiling.

I'd rather see Neifi start at second for the rest of the season (and by see I mean not watch) than see EPatt called up.

And I think we all know Fontenot isn't going to see any significant amount of time there.

I prefer ceiling over Hendry's recent run at players with a very low ceiling but lots of speed.

I expected a AAA reliever or a toolsy no hit slick-gloved middle IF.

It's just I have such low expectations of Hendry at this point.

Official press release is up on the front page, but I'll repeat the body here:

The Chicago Cubs today traded infielder Todd Walker and cash considerations to the San Diego Padres in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jose Ceda.

Ceda, 19, was signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent in November of 2004. The 6-4, 207-pounder was quick to post strong numbers, going 4-2 with a 1.50 ERA (10 ER/60.0 IP) in 13 games (nine starts) for the Padres Dominican Summer League Team in 2005. He limited opponents to a .174 batting average against (38-for-218) while striking out 83 and walking just 29.

This season with the Padres Arizona League club, Ceda has gone 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA (4 ER/18.0 IP) over his last six games (three starts) while holding opponents to a .200 average.

In just 89.0 career innings of work, the Santo Domingo, D.R., native has struck out 114 batters while allowing 58 hits and walking 40.

Walker, 33, signed with the Cubs as a free agent prior to the start of the 2004 season. The left-handed batter hit .286 (311-for-1087) with 33 home runs and 130 RBI in 333 games with Chicago. Walker was batting .277 (88-for-318) in 94 games with the Cubs this season.
