This is the current poll on cubs.com. Given the level of interest in the minor league system on this board, I thought it would be interesting to run exactly the same poll with the same choices here and compare results. Note that the lack of an "other" option is an omission from the original cubs.com poll, not an oversight on my part.

Gallagher is in last place on cubs.com. Not surprising. I voted Gallagher. I think Pie has the highest ceiling, but Gallagher has a fairly high ceiling as well and I think he has a better chance to reach it.

And that is what the question is actually asking, not who has the highest ceiling, but who is most likely to reach the ceiling they do have.

What is your definition of an impact player?
I didn't have a particular definition in mind (this is a poll taken from cubs.com, not my own). I think I'd consider an impact player to be a starting position player, or for a pitcher, a starter, setup man, or closer.

Pie by default as I'm not so sure about any of the others except Gallagher, who admittedly I don't know much about.

I would not consider a setup man an impact player.

I think an impact player would have to be somebody who is good enough to start for several years while being above average.

I wasn't clear enough, but I meant a top setup man (such as Hawkins his last year in Minnesota, or Rivera with the Yankees before he became a closer). I do agree with you about the position players; I didn't mean an average or below average player who started for one year only because the team didn't have anyone better. I don't think a player needs to be an All-Star to be considered an impact player, but does need to be a solid starter for several years. Perhaps a super-utility player (such as Tony Phillips or Mariano Duncan several years ago) could be considered an impact player as well.

In that case, Pie and Hill should be way ahead of the rest. If you wanted more than just a starting position player, it'd get more interesting.

I'd rank them in this order, from most likely to least likely to be an impact player:

Felix Pie

Rich Hill

Sean Gallagher

Eric Patterson

Tyler Colvin

i'm not sure if people think this is going out on a limb or not, but i am calling right now that colvin will be one of the best position players to come up through our minor league system in a very long time. that may not be saying a whole lot, but i think he is going to be an all-star player, several years in a row at the big league level.

You get all that from an 800 OPS at Boise?
