Dave Kaplan (WGN radio) just reported that Jim Hendry just announced that Dusty will be the manager for the rest of the season. ANY talk of extention will happen in the off season.

Wonderful. Guess we'll being seeing a lot of Neifi, Bynum, Nevin, and Pagan the rest of the year.

It's true.

That's what I get for typing in complete, coherent sentences.

I was invited to go to tomorrow's game, which would be my first game since the mini-NSBB get-together when Vance was in town.

After reading this, I'm turning down the ticket. The thought of Dusty getting an extension makes me nauseous.

Well I've now gone from pulling for them to humiliate themselves until Baker is fired, to until Hendry is fired... although I might just not care about baseball until the Trib sells the team...

The very concept that they could extend Baker is just mind blowing. Absolutely baffling.

And whatever long term outlook this franchise has does not include Baker, and at this point likely shouldn't include Hendry either.

It's not so much the managing out of the season that disturbs me (I don't like it, but figured that would happen). It's the growing inevitability that he'll get a contract extension that gets my blood boiling.

The fact that they would let him manage out the season can only mean they want him back, and it's just a matter of Dusty accepting. There's just no way they would let him manage out the season if they intended to let him walk. So for me, what matters is him staying on right now, because after that decision, the rest is inevitable.

I think Jim Hendry wanted to maintain the integrity of the playoff races. Afterall, how good could an interim coach be!?

I wonder how much of the decision was based on the lack of available candidate? I wasn't in favor of simply firing Dustry just to fire him and replacing him with a warm body who had no chance of succeeding. Maybe Lou, Brenley or others declined to take over mid-season???

Hey, it's not like a new manager would be a savior right now with Wood out for the year, D-Lee back on the DL and Prior's mental instability.

I must say, hearing Dave Kaplan reporting the story, I did not get the impression that an extension was a forgone conclusion at all. I got the impression that Hendry wanted to silence the speculation that Dusty would be let go this season. He also seemed to imply that Spier's recent troubles made this decision even easier.

I didn't get the impression that a Dusty extention was inevitable at all. In fact just the opposite that it was in even more doubt. That was just the feeling I got so don't just off the cliff yet.

Bottom line, wins and losses don't matter to this organization. It's about doing it their way, if that doesn't work, ignore opportunities to get better and keep doing the same thing that led to failure. Stubborn ignorance.

That's exactly what I read into it as. I bet Spier was gonna be interim, but now that he's off on DUI charges....they might as well let Dusty finish out the year.

Whatever. This year is a waste anyway. They were never gonna fire Dusty before the year was out, and this "no talk of extension until after the season" is a nice and fancy way of saying that he ain't gonna be extended. After all, if he was gonna get extended, they'd do it now, not later.

This clearly means to me that Bakers' contract is just gonna expire.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he is given an offer to come back, but I see no reason why this announcement makes that inevitible and can only mean one thing. this decision means nothing to me in terms of what the future of Dusty Baker with the Cubs is.

another thing it could mean - - all but Rothschild and Quade are Dusty Baker hires. firing him in all likelihood means firing the lot of them. you don't want to do that when you don't have replacements lined up. if you don't have replacements lined up in house, which the Cubs really don't and if they tried it would blow up the management throughout the system, I imagine drawing a bunch of interims from around baseball is next to impossible.

this decision and announcement could mean alot of things.
