Thus begins my campaign to always vote against the Stones. They never really did it for me, and the personalities in the band are, at the very least, totally obnoxious. I like "Paint it Black" and "The Last Time" now and then, but otherwise, I have no use for them.

My favorite Kinks song is one that I've never heard the Kinks' version of. There was a short-lived Chicago band called Mystery Driver who performed a cover of "Got My Feet on the Ground" by the Kinks. It was a great tune (and the only reason I bought Mystery Driver's CD). I'm sure I could download the original somewhere, but I can't imagine it's as good as the cover.

I voted for the Stones, but as i've said before, my Stones vote is only applicable to the Rolling Stones 1963-69. After Jones died in 69, they pretty much lose me.

We don't need to have this discussion in every thread about them, but your ability to just disregard Sticky Fingers amazes me.

They could have released "The White Album" in 1972 and I still wouldn't recognize it. The Stones aren't the Stones without Jones. Same thing with Skynyrd. I know it's an absurd viewpoint, but i'm sticking with it. I love their 60's stuff.

The Rolling stones never did much for me, and I like the kinks hits, So I am going with them.

As someone who has The Who as their avatar, you surprise me with your choice. Have you never listened to Beggar's Banquet?

No, I have never really gotten into the Stones.

I have noticed that its seems like every time the Stones are up a lot of people post that they are voting for the other band but the Stones still seem to kick butt.

I disagree about Brian Jones being some sort of reason that the Stones were good. It is common knowledge that Keith Richards has always been the one who gives the final say on a song. Brian Jones was never a song writer. Brian Jones wasnt as good as a guitar player as Mick Taylor was. I would say that the Stones may miss Mick Taylor more than Jones. Brian Jones was only a marginal member of the band for Let it Bleed and Beggars Banquet. He aslo wasnt on the tour that created Get Your Yas Yas Out, which was probably the first great live album.(Midnight Rambler and Stray Cat Blues off that album are just awesome) Also Sticky Fingers and Exile on Mainstreet are both great albums. I will say after that they never did anything as good but had some moments. Saw them in the late 80s with Living Colour and GnR opening for them, just a great show. Mick Jaggar had more energy than anyone on stage that night.

Mick Jaggar and Keith Richards probably did a lot to send Brian Jones into his downfall. I would just contend that Brian Jones was never anymore important to that band than Bill Wyman or Charlie Watts

I respect your opinion and it is your taste. I would just say the end point of Great Stones is Exile on Mainstreet which is a couple of years after Brian Jones demise.

I sometimes wonder if the Beatles would have kept on going or reunited what that would have been like. I think part of their greatness is that they ended. I think that Led Zeppelen and Pink Floyd were probably better for ending. One of the Stones problems to me is that they just havent evolved musically very well with the times but they do seem to try. Some of their better stuff since the late 60s early 70s has been when they just put out a good RnR song like Start Me UP. In the end most of their studio stuff does seem tired and not relivent.

The Kinks did evolve very well into the 70s. Low Budget, Come Dancing, Father Christmas, Superman were all great and didnt sound old or dated at time of release. Still not as good as the Stones from 64 to 72.

I can hang with that. I own a copy of Exile and I like it. I could submit to believing that Exile was the last great Stones LP.

Part of the reason why I'm mad at the Stones for hanging on so long is because I think it hurts their legacy. You mentioned the Beatles, Zep, and Floyd, who all went out pretty much on top. They have a limited canon of work that is very well respected and well known. However, the Stones have a billion albums and I know even BIG Stones fans who can't name them all. If they had a limited canon that ended with Exile. If Exile was their Abbey Road, so to speak, I think their legacy would be much greater than it is now, from a musical standpoint.
