Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Angel Guzman (3-4, 4.28 ERA, 54.2 IP, 58/16, 1.24 WHIP) vs. RHP Edinson Volquez (4-6, 3.32 ERA)

West Tenn: RHP Sean Gallagher (4-2, 2.60 ERA, 34.2 IP, 36/23, 1.50 WHIP)

Daytona: RHP Justin Berg (6-6, 4.68 ERA, 98 IP, 76/46, 1.56 WHIP)

Peoria: LHP Jesus Yepez (4-5, 3.42 ERA, 92 IP, 48/46, 1.42 WHIP) vs. RHP Anthony Cupps (6-4, 4.77 ERA)

Boise: RHP Billy Petrick (3-0, 2.10 ERA, 25.2 IP, 19/8, 4 HBP, 1.16 WHIP) @ RHP Ricky Orta (2-0, 4.15 ERA)

Mesa: RHP Jake Renshaw (0-0, 4.50 ERA, 4 IP, 2/1, 1.75 WHIP)

*Take Mesa's probable starter with a grain of salt as they shuffle their pitchers from the rotation to the pen with frequency. Also, Chris Huseby is expected to make his Mesa debut sometime this week.

PCL Notebook"]Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

WHAT WENT RIGHT: The I-Cubs got terrific pitching in the first half, especially from left-hander Rich Hill (6-1, 1.81 ERA, 107 strikeouts). The bullpen was also strong, led by Michael Wuertz (5-0, 9 saves, 1.78), Kerry Ligtenberg (2-2, 8 saves, 2.48) and David Aardsma (2-3, 6 saves, 2.79).

WHAT WENT WRONG: The I-Cubs got little, if any, offense to support its pitching. Iowa ranked near the bottom of the league in runs scored and doesn't have much speed or power. Outfielder Felix Pie (.256-7-39) has been inconsistent all season.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "It's been an uphill battle." -- I-Cubs manager Mike Quade told the Des Moines Register after his team passed the .500 mark by winning six straight games, sandwiched around the All-Star break. Iowa was nine games under .500 on June 4.

SL Notebook"]West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Diamond Jaxx were 0-4 following the break, a mark that left them 12-12 and in third place in the SL North, two games off the lead.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: The team scored eight runs in 39 innings in its first four games following the All-Star break, losing 3-2 in 12 innings, 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 in nine innings. The Diamond Jaxx collected just 18 hits, 15 singles and three doubles in the process.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Sean Gallagher is going to have to settle down if he wants to keep advancing in the Cubs' system. He was 4-0 with a 2.30 in 13 starts at Class A Daytona and is off to a 4-2 start in six starts with the Diamond Jaxx. But the right-hander who walked 21 batters and struck out 80 in 78 1/3 innings in Florida, has walked an alarming 23 batters, including six in a loss on Thursday, in his first 34 2/3 innings with West Tenn.

WHY THEY WERE LOSING: In the first four games of a series against Mobile, West Tenn's 3-4-5 batters went a collective 4-for-47 (.085).

FSL Notebook"]Daytona Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Cubs won their first three games of the week, scored just two runs while losing their last two and left work on Saturday atop the FSL East with a 14-6 record and a 1 1/2-game lead over St.Lucie.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Left-hander Donnie Veal improved to 2-0 in the FSL with a win over Vero Beach on Monday. In 24 1/3 innings over his first four starts in the FSL the left-hander gave up one earned run on 15 hits, walked 11 batters and struck out 17. "To come up to this league and put together that type of streak is tremendous," Cubs manager Buddy Bailey told the Daytona Beach News. Veal had been 5-3 with a 2.69 ERA for the Peoria Chiefs in the Class A Midwest League. But Veal faced harsh reality on Saturday, losing to Vero Beach in a game in which he walked five in 5 2/3 innings.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: Have the Cubs finally unleashed Ryan Harvey, the right fielder they took with the sixth overall pick in the 2003 draft? Harvey, dropped to the No. 7 spot in the lineup two games earlier, ignited a three-run rally after two were out in the top of the seventh inning with his second home run in a game the Cubs won over Jupiter, 5-4, on Thursday. "I've been taking it in stride, just personally trying to learn how to get out of it," Harvey told the Daytona Beach News on Monday. "The three, four, five slots are the RBI, power-hitter slots, so obviously going down in the lineup takes some of the pressure off me and lets me just go out there and hit pretty much."

MWL Notebook"]Peoria Chiefs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: A 2-4 week cost the Chiefs two spots in the standings, as Peoria fell from a tie for second into a tie for fourth in the West, three games out.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Jesus Valdez is 8-for-20 (.400) with four RBIs in five games, and Alberto Garcia is 10-for-29 (.345). Mark Reed is 1-for-25 (.040).

HOT STUFF: Matt Avery (3-2, 1.12 ERA) has not allowed an earned run in 10 innings over his last 10 appearances, picking up eight saves and 15 strikeouts in that span. The closer last gave up a run to Kane County on June 17. Avery's road ERA in 15 appearances: 0.36.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "She started going to my games in college, and she didn't know much about it. Now she can keep a scorebook. She loves it." -- Center fielder and newlywed Davy Gregg told the Peoria Journal Star about his wife, Bridget, whom he met at the University of South Carolina.

NWL Notebook"]Boise Hawks (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Eastern Division-leading Hawks went 4-1 last week, bringing their record to an even 13-13.

WHO'S HOT: CF Matt Camp has been swinging the bat well lately, hitting .378 with seven RBIs and five runs scored in his last 10 games. P Jeremy Papelbon has stayed significantly hot, striking out 11, walking one, allowing two hits without giving up a run in his last eight innings pitched. Collectively as a team, the Hawks' bats have awakened. They've hit .301 in the last 10 games, and .313 in the last five.

WHO'S NOT: Although no one in the lineup has hit under .200 in the last 10 games, 3B Elvin Puello has still had a little trouble at the plate, recording five hits in his last 25 chances. P Mike Billek, who had a good outing on Monday, has still struggled a bit lately, allowing eight earned runs and 17 hits through his last 11 innings pitched.

PLAYER TO WATCH: SS Steven Clevenger has been on fire lately, hitting .455 in his last four games.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: Billek helped the Hawks to a 2-1 win over Yakima on Monday, pitching six solid innings. He allowed four hits and one earned run through that span, keeping the Hawks in the game. Eighth and ninth-inning rallies allowed Boise to overtake Yakima in the end.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Hawks hit the road Monday for a five-game set against Everett before returning home to face Yakima.

Peoria wins 3-1. MiLB.com's box score is acting up, so I don't know much more. Listening to Nathan on the post-game broadcast, it sounds like Yepez and Rayborn pitched well.

The Angels lead Mesa 2-0 in the 4th. Renshaw gave up 2 ER on 3 H in 2.2 IP.

I heard Nathan say all that afterwards! And now the box score is fully functional...

Gilbert gives up 3 runs in the 6th and Mesa is now down 5-3 in the 7th. Oscar Bernard has relieved Gilbert and thrown a shutout inning so far.

I think you mean Walters....Gilbert is a LF and from what I can tell he hasn't thrown in a game all year.

EDIT: One thing I also just noticed in the Mesa box score is that Vanderhook threw out 3-4 would-be basestealers today. It'd be nice to have a catcher with an arm like that in the system.

Whoops, I meant Walters. I think I had Gilbert on my mind since he had an RBI basehit earlier in the game.

I can't get the DJaxx broadcast to come in (sorry, Ron!). The Biscuits broadcast is working for me. Is anyone else having a problem?

Guzman pulled in a shutout in the middle of the 4th after K'ing the first two hitters (8 K's through 3.2).

If anybody finds out any news on his latest injury, let us know.

Ugh.

EDIT:

Iowa Cubs pitcher Angel Guzman left the game due to an injured hand/wrist.

EDIT #2: Didn't realize Rocky Cherry had been promoted to Iowa.

Maybe it's a blister or something. Sure beats what it could have been.

The Redhawks announcer said "some sort of arm problem" and apparently the Iowa feed isn't available today.

Pie 3-3 with 3 singles so far.

The Oklahoma announcer just referred to Guzman "leaving with some sort of arm injury."

Doesn't sound like we can get the Iowa broadcast today.

As craig mentioned, Guzman was having a stellar game before the injury: 3.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 8 Ks, 0 BBs, HBP, 66 pitches, 44 strikes.

EDIT: Apparently Jon edited what I just said in into his previous post.

I even beat you on the edit. But not on your edit on my edit.

Bases juiced after a Montanez sac bunt attempt turns into a FC with Soto reaching third safely. Fontenot then hits a sack fly to make it 3-0.
