The White Sox have been calling around to clubs letting it be known that Javier Vazquez or Freddy Garcia would be available in a trade.

The White Sox expect Brandon McCarthy to join the rotation soon and want a top notch middle reliever back in exchange. According to a source, the Phillies are willing to give up Tom Gordon in a deal with the Sox. The Mets could also be interested, but Duaner Sanchez or Aaron Heilman would be part of the price tag.

Just wondering if either would be worth taking on for next year. Looking at the stats real quick Vazquez is giving up less HRs and has a better K/BB ratio. Although I think he makes quite a bit more.

I would like to see the Cubs get in on this. Vasquez to the Padres. Howry to the Sox. Kottaras and a lesse Padre prospect to the Cubs.

how would a fox/kottaras platoon look in the future? would the padres be willing to give him up? how's his d btw?

The Padres are very high on him and it may take more to get him than that.

His numbers at AA: 276/394/451. Supposedly he has a cannon for an arm. He was promoted to AAA over the All-Star break and did well in his first game with Portland.

I believe he has a cannon for an arm.

Kottaras as a primary catcher with either Soto or Fox as a back-up would be decent. Kottaras is a left, so he would get the bulk of playing time.

I like Kottaras as a player. I think the Padres view him as competing for a starting spot next spring and likely will try to pair him with a veteran catcher. If the Cubs could get him for just the cost of a middle reliever, even one like Howry, I'd do it. The only way the Padres do the deal is if they believe a SP like Vasquez is what is needed to finish the final playoff push.

so then you deal barrett?

Barrett's contract expires after next season. Kottaras was just promoted to AAA. If I ended up with Kottaras, I'd likely play him a half season there while Soto was back-up to Barrett. In July, I'd re-evaluate things. If Kottaras is hitting well, I'd promote him. If we're in contention, I'd keep Barrett and replace Soto with Kottaras and let him be a left-handed compliment to Barrett. If we're out of contention, I'd deal Barrett to a contender.

The Padres are in a different situation. Piazza is under a one year deal, so they can let him walk and give Kottaras a chance to win a job in the spring.

My desire for Kottaras isn't a short-term deal. There's no reason to deal Barrett if a trade for Kottaras is made.

maybe the cubs could send pierre along with howry to the sox, the sox send garcia/vasquez & a good prospect like aldridge or quinn to the padres, and the cubs get kottaras from the pad's & haeger from the sox.

The Cubs and a knuckleballer spells danger!

Vance, you know the Cubs will not trade Howry (or Eyre) this yr. Maybe next yr, but most likely in 2008 when he would be a soon-to-be FA. Why are getting people hopes up, like that?

I would like to see if the White Sox would do a Rich Hill and Scott Williamson for Garcia type deal.

Me too. If the Cubs make a move I hope it's for an impact bat or a potential impact bat. Hendry could have got these 2 guys for pennys on the dollar before.

How absolutely insane is it that Garcia or Vazquez are available for a middle reliever? With the Reds trade and rumors like this, there's at least some hope that we can begin the process of undoing Hendry's dismantling of the team by dealing at least some of our pen at the deadline.

Send them Pierre and Williamson for Vasquez and a B prospect. If Pierre has a wonderful second half we can always sign him back for next year.

Vasquez will give us solid innings. He may no longer be a front of rotation starter, but he sure is a lot more reassuring than Rusch, Williams or Wood.

Zambrano

Prior

Vasquez

Marshall

Marmol, Hill or Guzman

Makes a few of our younger pitchers expendable for a trade for an impact bat.

Vasquez looks amazing as a 4th starter next season if a Schmidt/Zito are signed. Then the surplus arms can get the corner OF. This premium on middle relievers could be great for the Cubs, depending on Hendry's selling ability.

NO!!!! Why involve the Padres?? And Howry for Vazquez or Garcia I would not do. I would demand Broadway and Fields in return for Howry.

Do you know Kottaras?

the Cub is way out of it this year & it is well past time to rebuild. They are absolutely not going to trade minor league talent for overpriced underperformers like vazquez & garcia. Why would they? They will be trading our own overpriced vets or vets w/ value for young talent.

Getting Kottaras would be a better haul than either Broadway or Fields. In the long term, trading Howry and getting Kottaras from the Padres would be better than making the Sox give up Broadway or Fields.

Not to mention, we'd be helping the White Sox more than we'd be helping ourselves.

That's not true at all. If the Sox are stupid enough to trade a SP that's anywhere near decent for a middle reliever, than we should be happy to oblige them, whether it's getting the SP or a top C prospect like Kotteras in return.

I think they feel they can sacrafice a starter b/c they want to open a spot for B-Mac in 2007, and you only need 4 starters for the playoffs. And Vazquez and Garcia are just benificiares of the White Sox high-powered offense. If they were on the Cubs, we'd be calling for their heads. I wouldn't want to give them bullpen help for a Garcia/Vazquez

Yet they are still Starting Pitchers that don't completely suck, which means it is royally stupid to only command a middle reliever(someone who couldn't cut it as a SP) in return. And no one cares how it impacts the White Sox situation with McCarthy.

They'd be sucking majorly on the Cubs. Don't be fooled by their records. They are benificiaries of the high-powered offense. Garcia has a 4.91 ERA, Garland a 5.37, and Vazquez a 5.07. Compare that to Big Z who has a 3.24 ERA. We'd be calling for their heads if they were on the Cubs.

BTW, thanks guys for no one yelling for me to stop.

ERA doesn't mean a ton, especially by itself. Both Vazquez and Garcia have passable WHIPs, Vazquez in particular has pretty good peripherals(K/9, K/BB, opposing line against) with Garcia not terrible in that aspect either. They are worth more than a middle reliever.
