the Cub is way out of it this year & it is well past time to rebuild. They are absolutely not going to trade minor league talent for overpriced underperformers like vazquez & garcia. Why would they? They will be trading our own overpriced vets or vets w/ value for young talent.

In my scenario, we would only be trading for the vets in order to get a very good catching prospect from the Padres. I wouldn't make the deal to keep Vasquez or Garcia.

Not to mention, we'd be helping the White Sox more than we'd be helping ourselves.

I think Kottaras would be a great help to the Cubs in the future, likely more than Broadway or Fields would. A catcher who can post a 400 OBP with a cannon for an arm is a great talent.

I'd gladly give the Sox Howry if the end result is getting Kottaras from the Padres.

What better way could the White Sox improve their bullpen than to acquire Scott Eyre and Bob Howry in one single trade? I would hate to lose our two most dependable relievers but for these two guys I wouldn't hesitate to make this trade. Imagine a 2007 rotation that might look like this:

Zambrano

Vasquez

Zito or Marshall

Prior or Marmol

Garcia

** It would be great to be able to sign Zito but if not, we always have Marshall. I would also try to sign Maddux at a reduced rate and use him as a middle reliever and spot starter. I know I'm crazy but it's fun to dream.

Garcia and Vasquez have been really shaky this year. The market for relievers might be able to get something even more valuable seeing the Reds deal that was just made.

I would like to see the Cubs get in on this. Vasquez to the Padres. Howry to the Sox. Kottaras and a lesse Padre prospect to the Cubs.

NO!!!! Why involve the Padres?? And Howry for Vazquez or Garcia I would not do. I would demand Broadway and Fields in return for Howry.

Do you know Kottaras?

I sure know the cubs have Barrett and a slugger in Jake Fox in the minors.

Even if it was a possibility, Eyre has a no trade clause and absolutely hated playing for the White Sox in the past. So I don't think he would okay a trade there.

I have a hard time believing the Sox would give up their two top prospects for a middle reliever.

Barrett is under contract for only one more year. It would be nice to have an heir apparent.

Fox may develop into a good catcher, maybe better than Kottaras, but Kottaras rates much higher currently.

In Sickel's 2006 Prospect book, he rates Kottaras as a B+ prospect. Sickels didn't include Fox in the 2006 book.

Kottaras is a year younger than Fox and has already advanced to AAA and even has a Future's game selection in his resume'.

While Fox was putting up a 313/383/574 line at single A, Kottaras, while being nearly a full year younger, was putting up a 276/394/451 line at AA.

Kottaras is also viewed to be better defensively behind the dish than Fox is generally viewed. Fox likely projects to have more power than Kottaras, but Kottaras has a higher ceiling and higher liklihood of reaching that ceiling than Fox does.

Jake Fox's exploits in single A at a year older than Kottars is now should not have much if any affect on whether Kottaras would be a good acquisition.

I dont see Kottars getting traded anyways. If he is so damn good why would the Padres deal him? Specially when Piazza is about done.

It's quite likely that Kottaras wouldn't be dealt. The Padres would deal him for the same reason lots of teams deal good prospects at the deadline, to acquire the piece that they believe either gets them to the post season or makes the difference once they have gotten there.

The Padres are going to need one more starting pitcher. The NL West is winnable, but all the teams are very close. Right now, four games separate the top from the bottom of the division. Furthermore, the NL as a league is weak. A major acquisition could mean the difference in a World Series appearance or sitting home completely. The Padres may see this as an opportunity and may be willing to give up a player with Kottaras' future if they get a player they see as making a difference. Would they think a starting pitcher like Garcia or Vasquez is that difference? I don't know. It depends on how they value each of them. I don't think it is out of the realm of possibilities though.

Of course, what I'm reading now is that the Padres are focused on getting a third baseman right now. They might not be dealing for a SP until that need is met.

Williams says he isn't dealing anyone on his major league roster and Fields & Sweeney are untouchable. I can't see him dealing McCarthy either. Basically, he would deal Garcia or Vazquez in a second to put McCarthy in the rotation even though he said he wouldn't.

Then again, that's what they said about Jeremy Reed and Joe Borchard.

My question to you guys: why keep patching together a team hoping it works? Why not clear house and start over?

Starting over doesn't make sense. It wouldn't take a ton of moves to make this team a contender, and the Cubs are in the financial position to pull it off. Clearing house and starting over is for teams like Florida that can't keep expensive players.

did you see what the nats got for two average middle relievers?

just a little info on the Kottaras debate. the Padres are currently carrying three catchers. Piazza and

a 28 year old switch hitting catcher currently putting up a 1.035 OPS in 110 ABs

a 25 year old switch hitting catcher currently putting up a .819 OPS in 41 ABs

not that I advocate one way or another, but I'm sure the Pads would be willing to trade Kottaras as they are pretty set at catcher with or without Piazza.
