Jim Hendry will make any trades or waiver deadline moves this offseason? I don't think he believes--or is ready to admit--that this season is over for the Cubs. Anyone believe he'll try to get an impact bat by the end of July?

before the deadline or this offseason? Yes, he'll make some sort of move before the trading deadline, and probably a waiver deal as well, and some offseason moves.

Will he get an impact bat? No.

I meant before the deadline at the end of July and the waiver deadline at the end of August.

It was wishful thinking on my part as far as his getting an impact bat. He doesn't seem to value OBP...or walks!

I think he's still holding out hope the team goes on a run and gets into some semblance of contention by the end of the month. However, I also think he understands the odds of that happening are pretty bad.

He won't do anything at the deadline and over the winter, he will pretend to go after Carlos Lee, Alfonso Soriano, Jason Schmidt, and Baryy Zito and give his typical "I fell short" crap.

Their goal at this point is to attempt to win as many games as possible to give an impression the season wasn't really all that bad.

Which means that Murton will stay on course as a part time/seldom used option in LF. Neifi will continue to get incredible amounts of playing time, etc...

I honestly don't think they'll make any significant moves. I also don't think any of the players that will be tradeable parts will have very much value at the trade deadline.

Who in their right mind will pay top dollar for Pierre, Nevin, Maddux, etc...?

Assuming Maddux was to agree to a trade then maybe a team would be willing to pay rather heavily for Maddux.

1. Post season experience.

2. Proven winner

3. A name that fans know and would embrace (i.e. appeasing the fans)

GMs have paid for these type of guys in the past.

Pierre....I honestly have no idea if other GMs value him or not.

I'm sure there's a market for both Pierre and Maddux. Pierre has gotten his average up (his OBP and OPS still suck) and he has a lot of stolen bases. I'm sure there are quite a few GMs who are dumb enough to want Pierre. You probably won't get all that much for Nevin though. Maybe a halfway decent prospect if you're lucky, but nothing much.

I bet he'll get at least one and maybe 2 out of those guys. My guess would be Carlos Lee and one of the pitchers. I could also see him getting Mulder instead of Zito/Schmidt, which would not be good.

It's going to be August before Hendry realizes the team isn't going to contend which will make it much harder to make trades to help the team in 2007.

Wouldn't getting Mulder be redundant? I mean the Cubs ALREADY have a batting practice pitcher who moonlights as a starter, in Glendon, do we REALLY need two of those types of "pitchers?"

Here's the way I see it. I'm not saying all these guys will be traded but here's where I'd categorize the players the Cubs have:

Hendry will keep unless totally blown away

Lee

Barrett

Ramirez

Zambrano

Hendry will probably keep

Eyre

Howry

Marshall

Guzman

Marmol

Murton

Cedeno

Jones

Prior

Most valuable pre deadline trading chips (not listed above)

Pierre

Maddux

Novoa

Ohman

Waiver deal candidates

Perez

Nevin

Rusch

Notes:

There must be other GMs that value what Pierre brings.

Despite his struggles after the good start, Maddux is a name. Shouldn't he be at least worth what the Pirates got for Kris Benson?

There will be a team desperate enough to take Rusch. He won't net anything in return, likely a PTBNL.

I could see a team valuing Perez's flexibility for the stretch run. In fact, if used in that capacity he wouldn't be a liability.

Did Nevin prove he could still play OF? He's said he doesn't want to DH, and he can't play 3rd anymore.

I sincerely hope he can dump, er, I mean trade Neifi and Rusch. Seriously, though as you said, if used properly, Neifi's flexibility can help a team down the stretch. As we all know, Dusty doesn't use him properly. :(

hendry will go after zito..but not want to overpay. so when his 10 mil a year offer is 1.5 mil short he will rebound by trading for 6 mil a year veteren and than signing a 6 mil a year swing man..thus spending 12 mil in order to not pay 11.5 mil to zito.

You make a valid point but I think Zito's going to get at least $12 mil a year on his deal and could be up to $15 mil a year.

His agent is Boras now and the Yankees and Red Sox will be going after him. Forget it.

Yeah, the only way the Cubs get him is if he really wants to come to Chicago and will take a $2-3 less mil a year to come here. So like CBB said, forget it. For that matter, I think we can forget about Jason Schmidt too especially if the Giants want to keep him, which I think they do. San Francisco has a TON of money coming off the books this year and will probably have over $30 mil to spend. If they want Schmidt in a Giants uniform in 2007, they'll have him in one.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Seriously I think this is exactly what will happen. Even if Hendry were to get one of the above something oddball will happen to that player as always when they put on the Cubbie blue.

if you folks may recall, the last time a young lefty with similar cache as Zito was on the market, MacPhail/Hendry put out the best offer in baseball.
