Dave Matthews Band + annoying black lights + horrible beer = lame college party

pumpkins 4 eva

when i was in college back in the late 90's) it was the same thing but replace DMB with Phish or Blues Traveller

I wish I were at your college. Mine was like CFICT's apparently. I couldn't get away from DMB.

Well, I guess it was mid-90's. I was at DePaul from 92-96, so basically before DMB broke big

Oh, I was 96-00. I think their 2nd CD came out my freshman or sophomore year. Couldn't take 5 steps w/o hearing it blaring from somewhere.

I haven't heard the double disc, but the 5 song sampler of his college tour eith Tim (included in the first pressing of "Some Devil") is awesome. "Grey Street" is 100x better acoustic than with the band

I had to vote Dave Matthews Band out of sheer gratitude to how many times their music helped me get into some girl's pants.

Must give credit where credit is due.

Considering Marvin Gaye isn't in this poll, yes.

I'd vote for literally any band over DMB. Seriously.

I'm staying out of this drummer discussion for the time being, it's more fun to see what you guys have to say. I'm almost done with my percussion performance degree, and I've met most of my idols at different Percussive Arts Society International Conventions, so my opinions on some have changed as a result of their character.

Short list of favorites: Danny Carey, Johnny Rabb, John Bonham, Dave Weckl, Ndugu Chancellor, Billy Cobham, Dave Garibaldi. Much more to come.

I can't believe the results of this poll. Ridiculous.

I concur. Part of my faith in fellow Cub fans having good taste has died. I can only assume this has something to do with the tour bus incedent!

Regardless of the poll results I still consider this a slam dunk win for DMB.

Don't wait any longer, you are only hurting yourself and I don't feel good about just sitting here and letting you do that to yourself. You wont regret it if you liked the bonus disc. Minarets, Warehouse and Halloween are brilliant from that double disc.

All this discussion of great drummers and no mention of Carter Beauford of DMB.

This may be the greatest drummer matchup of the poll.

As much as I hate DMB, I respect Beauford as a drummer. My hate of DMB most stems from Dave himself.

if you haven't listened to Mellon Collie and the infinate sadness i suggest it to all, its a great double album.

oh and, billy corgan ftw.

Oh god, my favorite band of all-time is seeded lower than one of my least favorite of all-time. Thank God it's not even close.

I remember the first time I heard the Smashing Pumpkins. My friend was listening to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness on the bus and he let me listen. I fell in love. I borrowed that 2CD album and rocked out to it for days, taping it to a cassette before giving it back. Then I found Adore, Gish, and the beautiful Siamese Dream. 7 years later, I'm still obsessed. I have exactly 500 of their songs (live, covers, bootlegs, demos, released, unreleased, etc.) on my computer, including some greats like the Mashed Potatoes Box Set, Billy's Gravity Demos, MCIS Demos, the final show at the Metro, the show before at the UC, tons of stuff. This band got me through lots of hard times, and I've never forgiven myself for not seeing them live. Thankfully, I should get another chance. I still think Machina is one of the most underrated albums of all-time. It's definitely not their best, but the replay value is fantastic. Tons of great songs on there.

Also, if you like their solo work, Melissa Auf Der Maur's solo album, "Auf Der Maur" is solid, and James Iha's "Let It Come Down" is absolutely fantastic. Billy's "The Future Embrace" is also solid, but his unreleased song "Tilt" is probably better than anything else on the CD. I've never listened to Jimmy Chamberlain's "Life Begins Again," but I'm trying to get ahold of it.

Anyways, I'm rambling, I apologize.

I really like the pumpkins and feel like they're on of the bands that helped define 90's rock.

DMB just annoys me -- its what all the potheads and hippie girls used to listen to at my hs.

DMB is one of my favorite bands. I think there's a certain auora about them that most people hate and therefore never can get into them. Also, there's the people who have only heard the pop songs on the radio (Crash, Where are you going, American Baby, etc...) and base their opinion of DMB on that. I find their music very original and I love listening to it. His more recent stuff is not to my taste as much (most of the Everday and Stand Up albums) but his live shows are still amazing. He also has great opening bands like Matisyahu, OAR, Robert Randolph, Umphrey's McGee, Jurassic 5, Victor Wooten.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. DMB got to be so huge and so affiliated with the "frat boy music" label that many people not already into them turned against them. I admit that while I am a big DMB fan, it is not any fun to go to a concert and sit in the lawn with a bunch of people that are 90% there for the party and 10% there for the music.

DMB gets my vote, although Mayonnaise by SP is probably on my Top Ten list of favorite songs ever.

Although I think that's an overstatement and a lot are there for both, that's one reason why I don't sit in the lawn when I go. I find that a lot of Dave Matthews fans are as loyal and hardcore as they come. One of my friends has been to NY, St. Louis, Colorado, Boston, NC just to see DMB. I'm pretty insane about going (already been to 4 shows this summer) but not as bad as him.
