I would have voted for anybody in this poll over Dave Matthews. That includes KISS, Yes and Genesis.

I may have even voted for Weird Al over DMB. Forget that, I TOTALLY would have voted for Weird Al.

But I don't feel bad about this pick, I really like the pumpkins.

I like DMB if I'm in the right mood, and his solo disc is quite good.

I do blame him for spawning the entirely unlistenable string of cute young male singer/songwriters. Jack Johnson, John Mayer, etc., etc., etc. I swear, all those guys should go on tour as a male Lillith Fair.

All that said, the Pumpkins rock way harder and I hope the rumors of their reuniting are true. It's one band I truly regret never seeing live.

Great idea!

They can have a tent where the women can bring their boyfriends to make them Eunuchs (sp?)

Pumpkins for me, but only Pumpkins WITH Jimmy Chamberlain, whom I consider to be the best modern rock drummer alongside Danny Carey of TOOL.

When I played, I always taught myself the drum parts (as all drummers do) by ear, whereas guitar players can have tabs, chords, etc. When "Mellon Collie" came out, I would just sit there and listen to some of those drumparts off that album and just say "Aw Helllll naw". What a freak.

"Mellon Collie", alongside "Nevermind", are in my view the two greatest and most important alternative rock albums ever released.

Although, I must admit that I really do enjoy the "Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds: Live at Luther College" double disc. That's some really really good stuff.

I'd put Dave Grohl in that list. I remember seeing him on Letterman a few years back after he'd won some award for "guitarist of the year" or something. He turns to Letterman and says, "that's funny, b/c, you know, I'm a drummer."

I'd also add Jon Fishman, but it's hard to convince others that he's as good as he is.

I'd say Grohl is an excellent musician before I'd say he's an excellent drummer. The fact that he's great a drums, vocals, and guitar make him an excellent overall musician. As far as what he has contributed to the modern drumming community, i'm not sure. Definitely not as much as Carey or Chamberlain.

While I do recognize that Fishman is a great drummer from both things i've read and his drumming that i've heard, you don't have to convince me of that, I just don't care for Phish.

my favorite drummers list is, in order: Bonham, Peart, Danny Carey, Keith Moon, Jimmy Chamberlain, Alex Van Halen, and Matt Cameron.

That's a great list. Bonham and Moon are my two favorites. Fishman's drumming is just unique, at least to me (and the man plays wearing a dress). But as for Grohl not contributing to the drumming community, I can't agree. I was in HS when Nevermind came out. Suddenly, everyone and their brother was playing the beat from Smells Like Teen Spirit. I realize he wasn't the first to play that style, but every HS drummer I saw started playing that way after that album came out.

But my favorite drummers include guys like Charlie Watts, who was more subtle. He wasn't playing like Bonham and Moon, but he was smooth.

Yes, in hindisight, I shouldn't have said that about Grohl. Because I remember immediately learning the drum parts off "Nevermind". My favorite is the drum part on "In Bloom"

Watts is also a fav of mine. Most musicologists put him in the same field as Ringo Starr or Mick Avory i.e. british drummers who come from an almost minimalist approach to drumming. Steady those guys were. They normally didn't try and do anything too elaborate. If you listen to both Stones and Beatles songs you will hear that Watts and Ringo rarely do fills while there is a vocal part playing.

I agree about In Bloom. And I'd put Ringo right there with Watts. Sometimes the minimalist approach is perfect for a given song. Although it'd be interesting to hear what Bonham would have been like with the Stones on some songs.

BTW - no Mitch Mitchell?

Dave Grohl plays as hard as anyone since Bonham live. He just hits the crap out of the drums. His work on the Queens of the Stone Age album is great too.

My favorite drummers border on the obscure. Scott Churilla, Brain, Josh Garza, Taz Bentley.

Neil Peart is the worst kind of show off. I really, really hate drummers with 97 drums for no good reason. You don't need 5 bass drums! Alex Van Halen is pushing it in this regard too.

8)

My favorite CD ever. Timmy is an amazing guitarist.

I am a Dave-head though.

Anyone that hasn't ever seen them play live should not be allowed to vote but that just wouldn't be fair to the poor Pumpkins. Robert Randolph on stage with DMB & their regular tour buddies = musical glory!

Check out John Mayer Trio's album. Great trio in the mold of Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experiment and Stevie Ray Vaughn. John gets props in my book for trying to keep blues-rock alive. It's not the "Your Body Is A Wonderland" type of stuff you typically hear on the radio from him. I feel it's a safe bet that it would change anyone's opinion about him.

This guy speaks the truth. I'd have abstained completely but Billy Corgan is a Cubs fan so I figured I might as well give him a vote.

I totally agree about Grohl on Queens of the Stone Age. Don't like the group really, but I like having Grohl behind the drums again.

And I have to agree about Peart as well. But I just can't stand Rush at all.

Dave Matthews Band + annoying black lights + horrible beer = lame college party

when i was in college back in the late 90's) it was the same thing but replace DMB with Phish or Blues Traveller

Dave Mathews band just is not a rock band. So whoever they face should win this pairing. And I'm more than happy to vote for the Pumpkins. Sometimes I think my Chicago-centricness is part of the reason I like them so much, but the fact is I think they're great, and they were a huge part of the 90's music scene. Billy Corgan seems like the kind of guy I could never get along with on a personal basis, but I really like his music.

Yes, DMB in the right mood. And its been said twice and thats still not enough....Daves double disc with Tim Reynolds is absolutely amazing. Its an accoustic guitar disc that i totally love to crank.

Siamese Dream is so cool. Living in college it was push play and fire one up. Very original sound.

I wish I were at your college. Mine was like CFICT's apparently. I couldn't get away from DMB.
