Jason Lane anyone? / Crazy Idea: Astros (Merged)

Yes, Jason Lane. Mr .205. Well his OBP this year despite the .205 average is .330, which is seemingly mediocre, but on the Cubs, that would bit him in the top third of the lineup. Also, he has 11 HRs this year, hit 26 last year, so he has some pop in his bat. He was sent down to AAA right now after 2.5 full seasons in the majors, so he is getting the Corey Patterson treatment on that roster. Buy low for once?

While in division trades are not always a good idea, it's less of a concern now that 2006 is hopeless. If you could trade the Astro components who help them in 2006 but likely don't help them in 2007, why not go for it?

So, here would be my proposal. Lets take Jason Lane off of their hands. They just demoted him to make room for Aubrey Huff, and speculation is that he may be moved.

Now, I realize he is having a terrible 2006, but we're looking towards 2007. And there is reason to hope that his struggles are a fluke. His splits are reversed from his career averages, he's hitting lefties better than righties this year. So it's not completely stupid to hope that he's having a fluke down year but is learning to handle lefties and that might carry over to the future.

My big positive on him is he has already walked more than he did last season, in half the at bats. He's still striking out as much as always, but the walks are encouraging.

If (and I realize it's a big if) he could find his power back and hit for average again, he'd almost be a poor mans Dunn.

While I realize it's a gamble, it's doing something incredibly un-Cub like, and that's buying low.

Now, as for what to give them...think they could be made to be interested in Greg Maddux? The allure of having another Hall of Fame bound pitcher in the rotation might be inticing.

Can anyone think of any other potential deals which might push The Astros into the 2006 playoffs but not screw up over come 2007?

You couldn't just post in the "Jason Lane anyone?" thread?

Since Adam Everett has a 605 OPS, and Houston's relief pitching ERA is ranked 10th in the NL, why not trade them Scott Williamson and Neifi Perez (hitting very well in July) for a prospect? Houston selects any prospect to trade if they pick up Neifi's salary in 2007; the Astros select one prospect from a group of 10 specified by Cubs scouts, if the Cubs pick up Neifi's 2007 salary.

Plant that bug in someone's ear and get it done.

Sounds good to me.

Can we change it so that the list of 10 is determined by another team's scouts? I don't think we'd make out well if the Cubs scouts pick 10.

Jason Lane and/or Morgan Ensberg would be great! :D Now, try to tell Hendry that! :(

If the cost was cheap enough, I'd take a flyer on him. With the acquisition of Huff, he won't see the Houston line-up again until September.

What do you think it would take to get Lane?

Guzman? Nevin? Ryu? Williams? Williamson? I dunno, just throwing names around. I'd love to land Lane.

If we trade Guzman for Lane I hope we are all forced to be remided of it everytime he shuts down our lineup in the next few years. Those other guys I would do.

What's so great about Lane?

Nothings really "great" about him, but he does have the ability to get on base and hit for power that would be nice to see on this team. Interestingly, both this year and last hes had horrendous Mays that have really hurt his #s. The astros may be able to use Nevin to platoon with Lamb. Nevin alone wont get Lane, but there might be a match.

He has a .330 OBP this year, .328 for his career. That's not very good at all for a corner OF, this year it would be 19th of 22 RFs or 17th of 20 LFs if he had the at bats to qualify. He'll be 30 in December and isn't hitting for any power this year. We could do much better than Lane, I'm not even sure he's appreciably better than Murton.

Yeesh. I didn't realize that.

Matt Murton projects to be better than Lane from 2007-2010 according to PECOTA.

Why trade for a player inferior to what we already have?

I don't really see what people see in Lane. Yeah, he's been walked quite a bit this year, but its not like he's been doing that over his career. He's almost 30 years old so I don't see him improving too much. He's a decent option for a 4th outfielder, but not someone I'd want starting for me.
