My suspicion is that if we hire Piniella, we are going to end up on the same road we have traveled with Baker. Proven mediocrity, aggressive singles, sacrifice bunting up the ying yang when we already make outs at a record pace, etc.

Hypothetical:

What if the Cubs/Hendry evaluated Baker decided to hang on to him and then fired him at the end of the year due to continued losing and the Yankees missed the playoffs and fired Torre?

Would Torre be a good option? Would he even consider the Cubs?

The reason I ask is because I really don't know if Torre is a good manager or not. I never really scrutinized his managing skills when he was with the Cardinals and I was young when he managed the Braves.

Pros:

1. Has won

2. Respected by players

Cons:

1. American league managing is easier

2. not to hard to figure out a line up for the Yankee temas he has had

Would he be a viable option if this were the scenario?

Lou won his World Series managing in the NL.

My post that you quoted is about Joe Torre. Or are you just stressing that Piniella should be the choice. I'm confused.

Opps...I'm the one that's confused.

Shouldn't this thread title have a question mark on it or (report)? I heard Jayson Starks saying basically the same thing yesterday morning on the Mike and Mike show and he stated that it was his opinion that Piniella wouldn't manage the Cubs.

The title makes it appear as Piniella came out and said he wasn't interested or wouldn't take the job.

C'mon now. It was simply an attention getter and the bulk of the post implies it is the opinion of Stark.

From the original thread:

Plus, Stark believes Piniella is waiting for the Yankee job

It is a message board not the NY Times. But, I'll make sure I hire an editor next time before hitting submit.

Sorry, I thought this was NSBB and not Cubs.com or ESPN message boards.

Sorry! Will a mod please delete my solacious trash(this entire thread)? I put a exclamation point instead of a question mark in the title.

Edit to add: If the title was misleading to you, then there might be bigger issues at hand considering that no one else seemed to be confused by the thread.

How about both of you take a step back?

I'll step back, but is it possible that the entire thread be deleted considering I started the thread?

Not by you, only by a mod.

I don't see why it should be deleted. I edited the thread title to note that Stark said it, not Sweet Lou.

FWIW, I don't like misleading titles anyway.

But back on topic -

I've just had a feeling that Lou Piniella would become another Dusty in the fans' eyes. He seems like the kind of old-fashioned guy that would be a detriment to a modern baseball team.

Fine, I'm requesting that the entire thread be deleted.

Taking your ball and going home?

Yes...it was misleading and I've gotten a couple complaints so it is better it just be eradicated.

Edit to add.....it serves no purpose any longer since the title became the object of the response. So it really has no merit. It is not really a "taking the ball and going home" situation. But, this thread does not seem conducive to baseball discussion so I probably shouldn't have posted it to begin with.

No reason to make a federal case out of a possibly misleading thread title. It happens. As a moderator, when I see a title that I think is misleading I simply edit the title; no big deal. The topic of the thread is a legitimate topic for discussion, so I see no need to delete it.

No need to take it personally either.

Ronnie sent me a PM asking for the thread to be deleted. I don't want to do it because the topic is timely, but to keep the thread going the discussion must get back on topic without any further bickering. If there's any more discussion about the title of the thread, as opposed to the topic, it will be deleted or at least locked.

I'm gonna guess that everybody plays a lot nicer in the sandbox when the Cubs aren't 20+ games below .500?? :?

I think that would be a safe bet. :D

Anyway, interesting article in the Sun-Times about Piniella for the Cubs job; despite what Stark says.

Not that I'm paranoid, but Stark is a big Phillie guy who knows that Manuel is going to get canned soon; he might be banging the drum for Sweet Lou to take over that ship.
