Scott,

You've been consistently optimistic for the two or so years I've been reading this board, and I don't wish for that to change. It's certainly possible for the Cubs to get back to an even record by playing great baseball in the second half, and I hope they do that. However, that's not a goal that I deem to be important. A World Series title would be great, but the goal is to play in the postseason....Anything else is very disappointing.

Couldn't agree more. But 0.500 is a big enough of a goal now. Post season and World Series are the 2 outer layers of the cubs season that I had to cut off and abandon. The 0.500 layer is the much thicker layer and since being a Cubs fan unfortunatly is the 'normal' goal for this team.

I just wanna see the Cubs play good baseball. Do I wish they won evertime? Yes will htye, no not this year. But who's to say that good baseball, hitting and pitching can't be played by our Cubbies this year?

I say it.

If the pitchers gave quality starts

If the Cubs provided some good and early run support

If they keep their defense going

If the Pen does it's job, which it seems they have in Howry, Eyre, Novoa and Dempster.

If pigs had wings, they could fly.

Ostriches have wings but they can't fly?

Cubs getting back to 0.500 is more realistic, slightly more.

Scott,

Thanks for these threads. It's good to know that I'm not the only one that remains up beat for the Cubs. Yes, we all know the weaknesses of the players and the management, but I still go into each game thinking the Cubs can win.

Is it a long shot? Yes, but these are the Cubs and where there is life there is hope.

The worst thing in sports is to be mediocre. If .500 is a goal, its a goal that guarantees not only mediocrity for years to come, but also a never ending cycle of disappointment.

Getting to .500 would be the worst thing that could happen to this team and those of us who aren't just satisfied with "being entertained." Many of us would rather have a championship-and getting to .500 this year would push us further away from a championship.

Unfortunately, this post could be speaking the truth. While it is hard for me to ever root against the Cubs, losing may be the best thing to awaken management that changes need to be made.

If the Cubs pitchers can shutout the other team the rest of the year we wll probably win most of those games.

The slippery slope is this.

The Cubs pitching has failed due to trying to be perfect because poor offense. The offense has been just god aweful, but with D Lee, Barrett, Jones and JP getting in a grove, runs are going to be scored once again. Am Ram will alway be a side-kick, never a main hero. The defense as a whole is respectable.

So if the offense gives 3 runs a game, the pitchers can give quality starts and the pen does what it's suppost to do sans Fat Glendon. then I see the Cubs fighting for respectability once again.

(hears.. off in the distance the "neigh sayers" stampeding toward the thread.")

How's that coming along? Once again the Cubs prove you can't win if you don't score.

The Cubs pitching held them to 2 runs. The offense didn't get it done. What can I say.

The four pillors of winning Pitching, defense, offense and dusty not over/under coaching.

So the cubs lost but September 9th is viable still. They need to take the next 3 games. Which they will. No pitcher is hotter then Capacinno (what his name is). So the Cubs will go up against worse pitching which bodes well for the offense to score some runs. Look for D Lee and Am Ram, Todd Walker and MUrton to get it going.

The pitching staff has thrown quality at least the last 2 games. It's the offense's turn to show up and help them tonight. Look for a good win tonight.

These words, I do not think they mean what you think they mean.

Viable: feasible; capable of being done.

Yeah, it means exactly what I thought.

Weather? :sunny:

Weather, whatever. Sunny if we win.

KC won 11 out of 16. Another reason for hope.

That's not a sign for hope. What good is 11/16 when you are still just 30-54? It's just a sign that any crap team can have short bursts of decent results, but they are still very likely to remain a crap team when all is said and done.

I don't believe we have a crap team.

That another team won 11 of 16 is a reason for hope? That KC (if they haven't already) will probably pass the Cubs' soon is a reason for hope?

I give you credit Scott....you got 5 pages out of this thread.

That's 5 more than I thought you would.

That's because every Cub fan wants to believe it might turn around.

Because even in the depth of suckiness we are at, the Cubs could regain some level of respect.

So the level and bar is set at the 0.500 level. Not the playoffs or World Series.
