Bruce's story on the subject.

Hard to say what Hendry is thinking. At this point, I really can't tell if he's just saying what he has to say (i.e. not going to trash Baker in public) or if he really believes this crap. Hopefully it's the former, but I'm not optimistic.

Hendry was on Dan Jiggetts show on comcast and said that Dustys job is not in jeopardy. I openly weeped. He also said that most of the current Cub players are in their future plans??? So they probably are not going to clean house. So if Hendry is saying that the current players are good enough to win with and not wouldnt that be saying that Dusty is not doing a good enough job. This turned my weeping into bawling!!!

Did anyone else watch this? I saw this last night while the cubs game was on commercial. I have never been so angry.. I have no confidence that Hendry will every make a right move. All he kept blamming it on was clutch hitting. Then they compared the cubs to the Yankee's, saying that they lost more in the terms of players than the cubs have and they are still only a few games out of first. Jim answered by saying we have players that have a history of performing and just haven't had the clutch hits, and then used the injury excuse. Which the question was alread addressing the injury issue... I hate this team..

until baker's ties with the cubs are completely severed i'm never going to be convinced that hendry doesn't think baker is the absolute right man for the job, and that baker is perfectly capable of managing through this.

I might have agreed a few months ago, but based on some of JH's recent's comments, I think the tide has turned for good. Read today's paper again.

I have a nasty feeling that if the team finishes anywhere near .500 that will be a "turnaround" and Baker will get his extension.

They don't have to finish around .500. They'll just have to play around .500 ball the rest of the way and Hendry will feel it's justified to bring the idiot and his band of loonies back.

Didn't they say publicly that Don Baylor's job wasn't in jeopardy...then they fired him? I don't believe anything management says, especialy the cubs.

Going to? I'd say they are already dead.

They are wounded now. But all they need to do is spot their weaknesses and improve upon them. Continuing on the futile quest for more clutch will kill them.

If Hendry does indeed keep Baker around it proves without a reasonable doubt he should go too. I'm curious on how much Hendry listened to Baker when or if he asked about adding players.

I have to believe that Baker is leaving by or at the break. Baker is too thin skinned to last an entire season of this type of critisizm.

True enough, I suppose. I guess I just assume they are giong to continue down the path of the mystical clutch until Hendry is gone. Since he's got his extension, I'm not holding my breath.

"Every opportunity to succeed" = Hendry covering his rear since a minority is probably going to get fired here at some point.

I feel that's already been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. It was proven last year when he didn't shut Wood down last year and have him undergo surgery immediately when it was determined he needed it.

I have pretty much stayed out of the "Fire Dusty" fray....until now.

I don't believe that this team has what it takes to win, even if God (or your omnipotent deity of choice. If you are agnostic, I guess maybe Bobby Cox would fit the bill there) was the manager. That being written, I don't believe that this team's faults are necessarily Baker's fault. The old saying - "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken poop" holds here. It is what it is.

I will say however, that this poor team has really magnified Mr. Baker's shortcomings, and it seems very obvious to me that he has lost the players.

Baker is a decent manager when he has talented players who all get along (team chemistry?). But, when you toss in a heavy dose of adversity, he clearly cannot hold the team together and get them to PLAY together.

Besides, he is very average at in-game strategy, and poor at handling his pitching staff.

His man-love for certain veteran players is befuddling.

His absolute refusal to change strategies, even in the face of overwhelming statistics proving the folly of said strategies is also befuddling. It makes him look either stupid, subborn, or arrogant..., or all three.

He needs to go. This organization needs to get rid of the whole coaching staff, except for Dick Pole (don't you laugh at that name!) and Chris Spier.

My dog is a good manager if you give him great players and no adversity.

I disagree. God would not have Neifi playing almost everyday and batting 2nd.

hendry's thoughts are consistent with what i've believed for a while now.

hendry will never embrace OBP, never embrace plate discipline as part of team philosophy. he will, instead, continue to putz around attempting to win without anyone being able to get on base. even when this appears impossible, he will still continue to press it 100%. either out of spite for "baseball outsiders" or out of sheer obstinance, he will continue to embrace his theories until he is fired. what scares me is that macphail is going nowhere, thusly hendry will be going nowhere, he's been given a virtual "license to lose".

dusty only perpetuates the flawed logic of upper management onto the baseball diamond.

"swing at everything, but don't strike out, just put it in play weakly because striking out is the end of the world."

Andy might be in NY within a year or two. When he's gone, Hendry's biggest supporter is gone. I believe Hendry will have to turn things around by next season or he'll be canned either way. The Cubs are not afraid to fire people.

i hope you're right, but i'm wondering what macphail has done in chicago that other teams might admire and covet.

The first one to be fired will most likely be the trainer.

I hope Dusty stays the rest of the year.

If we have to watch this abomination, he should too.

The last thing I want to read about is Dusty enjoying relaxing fishing trips, while the Cubs season continues its swirl around the toilet bowl.
