And Steve Posted and Answered my Question:

cubbiechris (chicago, IL): When are the Cubs going to let Dusty Baker go already? The team is a fundamental mess...

SportsNation Steve Phillips: (3:08 PM ET ) Well, I find it hard to completely blame Dusty for the Cubs struggles. He hasn't had a healthy team all season long. They were built around the pitching staff and the injuries to Wood and Prior have crippled them this year. Throw in the loss of Derek Lee for two months and you can understand why they have struggled. Dusty is a great motivator and his players have always played hard for him in the past. I don't think it is Dusty's fault and I would give him another chance to see if he can turn it around before the end of the season. The Cubs might have to make a move at some point just because they have to make a move, not necessarily because Dusty is to blame for the struggles.

I bet he hasnt watched more of 40 miuntes of the Cubs this year

You're absolutely right. If he watched the game on 6/25/06 and still said those things he has no right to ever GM again. This team is lost and Bakers country club atmosphere let's it continue.

It would be one thing if this team was struggling to stay at .500. You could make an argument that Dusty was getting the most out of the team in that situation. But this team is 18 games under .500. They are playing sub .400 baseball, and have been as bad as a team could be for May and June. You can't give the "see what he can do with everybody" excuse and also talk about how he's a great motivator that gets the most out of players. Part of getting the most out of your pitchers is keeping them healthy, and part of getting the most out of your players is having guys step up when guys go down to injury.

does anyone else absolutely hate it when people who are supposed to be "in-the-know" misspell names?

Huh?

Phillips misspelled Derrek Lee's name.

I figure it's because he's written "Steve <3 Derek" in all of his notebooks roughly 100,000 times over the past 10 years or so. Jeter's a cutie, can you blame him? :P

exactly. if the team was fighting to keep its head above water during those injuries, it would be one thing. but they've tanked. a healthy wood, prior, and lee would probably not make this team a .500 club. and even if they did, a .500 club w/ those three healthy is terrible.

i also find it amusing that wood and prior's injuries are often given as reason not to fire baker, when, in fact, their injuries should be a reason for firing baker, given how he's handled them.

Let's not forget Hendry in the mess. Hendry knew he couldn't count on Wood and Prior to stay healthy, and YET the only thing he did to address the starting rotation is re-signing Glendon "Two Ton" Rusch.

All I know is you know the famous pictures of three monkeys (you know the one with one monkey covering his eyes, one covering his ears, and one covering his mouth):

MacPhail: Hear no evil.

Hendry: See no Evil (not the movie)

Baker: Speak no Evil

And the Cubs would not be worthy of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog of "pooping" on them,

I certainly have not forgotten him. But his presence is no defense for Baker.

I would flip those roles around.

Baker "speaks evil". Despite his reputation as a player manager that deflects heat, he will target guys he feels are letting him down and subtely, or not so subtely, call them out in the press. Usually they are young guys. I'd say that MacPhail is speaks no evil. He only talks about how happy he is with Hendry's work and has said little else about the Cubs themselves.

I'd say Hendry sees no evil because he's just absolutely blind to the real problems that have held down this team.

Baker hears no evil because he gets asked the questions all the time and will hear none of it.

jeez, lighten up. he missed a single "R". it's not like he had mistaken derrek lee for derek harper.

it just bothers me because i've seen so many people do it (derek, derrick, derreck). I don't get what's so hard about spelling a name correctly. If it was Mientkiewicz or something, fine. But Derrek? Ugh.

Just a pet peeve.

It's not spelled correctly so often because it was poorly spelled by his parents. Blame them. Derek is how you spell Derek in America. If you want to spell it differently, expect mistakes.

I spell mine Derek, but it is still spelled incorrectly more often than correctly by people other than family and friends. Even they spell it wrong occasionally.

No offense but who really cares about the correct spelling of Derrek?

I do, obviously, that's why I posted about it. It bothers me when people can't spell a simple name. Especially a former GM that actually GM'd in the same division as Derrek.

Like I said, it bothers me.
