Manager Dusty Baker won't call current Billy Goat Tavern owner Sam Sianis for a designated billy goat on Monday, but he said he may play Phil Nevin in left field.

Whether Nevin has more range than a goat is questionable. This will mark the first time Nevin has played the outfield since 2003 with San Diego.

"I haven't really seen it, but there's a distinct possibility," Baker said. "We need his bat in the lineup, and I might put him out there until he shows he can't do it."

Cubs management quiz.

Question 1 Who to play in LF?

a. Phil Nevin and sit Murton on bench.

b. Phil Nevin and make sure that Murton still gets at least 3 or 4 starts a week somehow

c. Understand that the season is over and just let Murton play and develop

d. Phil Nevin and send Murton down so he will certainly be playing.

The correct answer if you were in Cubs management would be a. Any well run and building for the future team b but most likely c. What a well run but unrealistic about this years team would do d.

I at least hope they send Murton down if he isnt going to play most everyday. For some reason I dont think they will until the great Bynum or Pagan return.

I actually like the theory behind that strategy. Too bad he'll only use it for an aging veteran that won't help this team do a darned thing. And too bad they didn't think that way with Nomar, instead of just assuming from the start he couldn't help at another position.

In other words, until the first inning of his first start in LF.

I think there are plenty of reasons not to like Nevin over Murton (age, etc.), but I don't think defense is one. Murton is a hack out there (as is Nevin), and LF defense is relatively overrated anyway. That said, I still would rather have Murton out there b/c the season is over anyway.

Everyone will have a newfound respect for Murton's defense in LF once they see the great Phil Nevin play there. Phil's one of my favorite players (back in his days with San Diego), but outfield defense is definitely not one of those traits that earned my obsession.

I'm not sure I could have respect for Murton's defense in left even if Nevin sits down indian style and soils himself before each batter-the difference between horrific and bad isn't a big deal to me.

Well at least you aren't overstating it... 8-[

you have to understand, Baker is fighting for his job. We would love to have the team play lots of younger players as our season is over, But Baker doesn't care about next year, only saving his job and playing the old guys. I expect Neffi to play SS and 2nd base at the same time to sit Cedeno, and Nevin play Left. Slappy in CF and No baseball skills Jones in RF. Roush to come off the DL and start twice a week, Sit all those young pitchers on the bench and tell everyone it's their fault Baker is such a bad Manager.

exactly. there will be no development of young players as long as baker's still on the hot seat. funny thing is, the young guys could get more of a chance to play if dusty got extended. you can tell by his ridiculous quotes/excuses in the press that baker is in full on panic mode right now.

But his bat at least knocks in some runs.

BP's fielding metrics have Murton well above average in LF, probably gold glove caliber. BTF has Murton above average but middle of the pack overall. No matter how you slice it he's not a hack.
I guess BP doesn't actually watch games.

Well, it's hard to knock in runs when there is nobody on base.

BP isn't the greatest, but they're at least as good as any of our hazy recollections. Again, he's not a hack by any stretch.

I have no problem with playing Nevin in LF until the all-star break. I'm still hoping the cubs can win 11 out of 14 here. And if they do they still have a slim chance of making the playoffs. However, if they go 7 and 7 then it doesn't make a big enough difference to play Nevin in Left and you have to let Murton play.

Maybe i'm just dreaming, but I see no reason not to hope for the best until the All-star break. If we cannot make a run then throw in the towel but not yet.

they need to win 69% of their games over more than half a season to get to 90 wins. That's 111 win pace. We've passed "well, the Astros did it" levels here

The Astros had a much better team too.

Not if we can get Pagan back soon
