I'm quite surprised how bad Mulder has pitched.

Only 4 quality starts out of 15.

18 HRS allowed and a 6.09 ERA.

I thought he would have a good year......Meh, was I wrong.... #-o

They sucked on paper. They had a good couple of months to start the season. Reality is closing in on them.

Actually, based on paper, most prognosticators thought they'd win the division, didn't they?

They're about where I expected them to be right now, actually. I know they'd have rough stretches.

They were expected to win the division, but looking at the staff on paper even at the beginning of the year they didnt look that good. I am suprised we got as much out of Ponson as we did.

I don't think the prediction to win the central was based on their pitching. To me, it was more an indictment of the rest of the division.

Could be.

Carpenter is a stud. I think everyone assumed that Mulder would be terrific. Suppan is ALWAYS steady. Marquis looked like a solid #4, and most folks figured that one of Reyes/Wainwright/Ponson would impress.

I wouldn't say that the pitching looked great, but they certainly looked solid and deep. And, they may yet be. They certainly aren't right now.

If by being a career .500 pitcher ( 100-98 ) with a career ERA of 4.68 means steady, which I suppose it could be, you are kinda right.

But I don't think Suppan is a very reliable starter, IMHO.

Suppan has had an ERA+ of under 100 only once in the last 7 years. That's steady........ and not just kinda.

Well, steady could mean that there aren't any surprises...

I have to agree with KTown Suppan has been a fairly steady number 4 or 5 pitcher in his career. He is durable, will pitch a good amount of innings a year and keep his era in the mid 4's not bad for an end of the rotation guy.

There is a guy that you might have heard of that was the big reason behind this. His name is Pujols. Not sure if you've heard of him.

Exactly right. Also, the presence of Pujols in the lineup makes "reliable" guys like Suppan tolerable in the rotation -- his MIA status has in effect exposed the starters.

St. Louis starters by VORP:

Carpenter 29.1

Reyes 5.1

Sir Sidney 3.7

Marquis 1.9

Suppan 1.6

Mulder -4.5

Blechhh!

so does mulder really have an injury or are they just buying him some time to rest mentally and physically.

It sounds like a combo of tired arm, badly needed mechanics retooling, and some mental rest as well.

I think he's really hurt. I've seen his last few starts and he's struggled to reach 90mph for a while now. Too bad since it's his free-agent year.

If the Cubs were to have 2005 Derrek Lee (who I'm afraid will never exist again) for the whole season, they would change from an incomparably sucky team to only a pretty sucky team. The Cardinals go from above-average without to division champions with Pujols, especially since the NL Central isn't too hot these days.

Looks like Reyes may be our best pitcher now..

Na, just those pesky Tigers stealing signs. Now we know why the Cubs pitching staff is so bad this year...those dadgum sign stealers.
