I just want to take a moment to applaud Goony's outstanding "Trading Places" reference, which seems to be lost on everyone.

Kudos

Looking good, Billy Ray!

Alright, I'll take this one...

Feeling good, Lewis!

First of all, I doubt Hendry trades Jones. He signed him to that contract and Hendry likely sees Jones playing well enough to justify it.

That being said, I'd do this deal in a heartbeat. It doesn't matter who plays right for the remainder of 2006 as we're not contending anyway.

I'd let the Yankees have him. If I could get Jose Tabata or Eduardo Nunez, I'd do it.

How about a little imagination? The BOSS looks and feels panicked over this year, why not really get something good? He needs pitching and outfield, right? Why not Jacque, ARam and Prior for A Rod? I know, I'm high, but I'm all for blowing up our particular team and getting something worthwhile.

first- i agree that i can't see hendry doing it because he would be admitting his mistake

second-jones is not in his prime and will not keep up these stats...think burnitz last year

third- he is being paid 6 mil per year that can be used to land some real help next year. also because of his deal and the fact that we need a lead off guy, if he stays he will block either murton or pie from playing or force a deal of one of them. we can have pie play cf but we can not have him lead off.

fourth-we have a 95 mil dolar payroll. we are the worst team in the nl and arguably becoming the worst in baseball(kc is 6 behind and we started 14-9 while they were like 3-18) why pay a player 6 mil for 3 years of decent production(at best) while risking he could freefall and we would be completely stuck. he may be our best hitter in the of right now but on a sinking(sunk) ship who cares...look at the big picture.

if we could get anything for wood and prior i would take that also.

we are bad, and ANY room we can get to amke moves for next year is a bonus no matter how bad we might be this year. seriously, do we need to keep jones do that we can stay ahead of pittsburgh and kc..is that our goal?

whats wrong with melky? he's a switch hitter, only 21 and is hitting .385 at aaa with a .995 ops. i would say jones for melky would be an acceptable trade. if he doesnt work out, at least jones wouldn't be in rf anymore.

Career minor league numbers entering 2006, .285/.339/.409. He's got like a 650 OPS in the majors this year. He's a short pudge ball with just about no upside and no history of production.

If my choices were Jacque for Melky or keep Jacque for three years, I'd probably make the deal just to clear the space. But Melky doesn't seem like a prize to me.

he's listed at 5'11 170. i've never seen melky but aaron wasnt much bigger than that. again, at 21 maybe he's figured it out (as his #'s at aaa seem to indicate). from what i've read, at least he's got a good arm.

The only problem is you need to find two OF bats instead of 1 if you trade Jones. Jones platooned with someone who kills lefties is very good production out of RF.

Not if you can somehow acquire an OPS machine to take his place, not necessarily from the Yanks. We can still afford to be buyers as long as the deal is right. This season may be over, but it's never to early to build for next.

I don't think Jones will be traded to NY. I think they have their sights set on Abreu or someone of more significance.

However, if Jones were to be traded they could bring up someone from the minors like Sing (even though he looks like he'll never make it) or put Mabry out there. It's not like the Cubs are going anywhere this year.

If the Cubs are interested in dealing Jones I hope they do it now because hopefully the Yankee's will overpay so that they get his bat a month early. Maybe the Cubs can offer them Blanco, Wuertz,Williamson if he gets to healthy to increase the chances of getting some vaule.

The Cubs probably won't get anyone of much value from the Yankees. Thankfully, two of their pitchers I'm curious about (Jeff Marquez and Tyler Clippard) are both struggling in High A and AA (respectively), yet are still putting up some nice peripherals. I'd like to see Jimbo get one or both of them for Jones.

But then again, if Hendry can get a sack of magic beans for Jones, I'd be all for it.

It all depends on whether Hendry thinks he can find the missing pieces this offseason to compete next year. If he thinks he can position the team for success in 2007, then it doesn't make sense to go into an all-out firesale mode. It would actually make more sense to be a buyer at the deadline if guys like Abreu, Cabrera, etc. become available.

If his assessment is that we have too many holes to fill and that we don't have a chance of competing, then sell like there's no tomorrow.

Personally, no matter how bad the team has been so far this year, I'd say that #1 is closer to the truth. I don't really care for Jones, so if someone offered me something decent for him, I'd sell. But I'd hang onto the guys I figured as my core.

I agree with you 100% on this Tim, especially considering how weak the NL is now. You can make the case that Kenny Williams set up the 2005 world championship by using this exact same strategy in the summer of 2004 when the White Sox weren't going anywhere, by acquiring Contreras and Garcia.

For me, there's too much of a bitter taste in my mouth with this team. There's too many guys I flat out don't like, and I don't want them on the team anymore. I'll take whatever works as far as building a successful team, but given my choice, it's fire sale. It's like I've swallowed something that tastes horrible...it's time to wash out my mouth.

I'd hold onto the core in either scenario. The problem is the core is extremely small. Or maybe that's a blessing since it allows you to trade just about everybody.

What is that core? Z, ARam, Cedeno, Lee, Barrett?

Gonny who's in your core for next years team?

Cedeno

Lee

Ramirez

Barrett

Zambrano

Prior

I am holding judgement on Marshall and Marmol before I lump them into next years core.

I don't know that Cedeno is on my core...if he can help bring another good talent in, I go for it. He's not so valuable that he's untouchable for me.
