Not sure where this should belong so mods can move it, but I just had an idea. What would you guys say to Larry Bowa as manager. I think he'd be perfect for this team. Hard nosed, tough, and strong on fundamentals. I'm watching the yankee game and there was a little bit of a mishap on the field and who's yelling at the players as they come in? Not Joe Torre, it was Bowa.

His success in Philly (W-L record, at least) is iffy. But I wouldn't mind hard-nosed and fundamentally sound for a change.

My knee-jerk reaction is an emphatic no.

I don't really care if the manager yells or lot like Bowa or makes excuses for his players like Baker.

I care more about whether Bowa believes in first inning sac bunts, keeping 12 pitchers on the roster, and starting Freddie Bynum, Neifi Perez, John Mabry, and Tony Womack.

Unlike Baker, Bowa didn't play in the 60's, but he did begin major league play in 1970, so I'd bet he wants to play the game like his managers played the game.

Those who are more familiar with Bowa's X's and O's should chime in.

Larry Bowa is a definite no. He was entertaining to listen to as a co-host of baseball this morning on XM, but I remember him emphatically saying he'd never read a book like "Moneyball" because there's nothing "those guys" could teach him. His views are too much like Joe Morgan for my liking. I want someone with a little more of an open mind.

How could someone ever say something like that and want to better themselves? Even if a book is compete poopoo you still read it and take something out of it.

I doubt many 'old school' baseball guys are going to admit to reading a book about baseball written by a finance guy.

Which is one reason I'm against any "old school" baseball guy.

Good guitar players don't necessarily know how to write hit songs, and good baseball players don't necessarily know the best way to win games.

Bowa played shortstop and I didn't, and that has little to do with knowing how to manage a baseball team.

The Trib would never allow Bowa to be hired. He'd figure out very quickly what a joke this franchise is, and then he'd start SAYING it publicly.

The truth just doesn't fly with the Cubs. They prefer their pleasant delusions.

No, Larry Bowa has about as much chance of becoming Cubs manager as Ralph Nader has of becoming President.

Jack Mckeon

Ozzie Guillen

Mike Scioscia

Terry Francona

Tom Kelley

Jim Leyland

Bobby Cox

Joe Torre

Some manager's that have won World Series since the late 80's. Brenly was not listed . Neither was Gaston because I just don't remember him enough to list him as a old school but if an old school manager can get us the results these guys have gotten i'm all for it. Not sure how many of these guys have moneyball in there library at home. I do know however that they have these things called World Series rings that Billy Beane doesn't. Not sure if that makes them relavant or not.

Larry Bowa just seems like a guy that will get you to a certain point and that's it. But that point is miles ahead of where the Cubs are now.
