Okay, it's an off day so just some thoughts

Where were you when.....

The Cubs had to walk down the left field line to get to the clubhouse?

Some ballparks had baseball-shaped golf carts to bring in the relief pitchers from the bullpen?

ABC had Monday Night Baseball?

Brant Brown dropped the fly ball in Milwaukee?

The 1994 World Series was canceled?

The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds were in the NL West?

Shawon Dunston would charge the mound just about everytime he was hit by a pitch?

Harry Caray would call Andre Dawson "Andre Rogers"?

Kirby Puckett became the first $3 million player?

George Foster became the first $2 million player?

On 8/8/88 the first night game at Wrigley was rained out?

Jack Brickhouse would say, "The upper deck is closed today."

Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau were the best in the biz?

30 homers was considered a "monster" year?

Marla Collins was the hottest woman in sports?

The worst words you'd hear after a Cub home game was "Game suspended due to darkness?"

The Cubs had Andy Frain ushers?

Lee Elia went on an obscenity laced tirade against Cub fans?

Again, just some thoughts. Feel free to add as you wish.

You generally ran down my childhood.

I recall waiting all freaking day for the 8/8/88 game. Then, it came and stupid ol' Phil Bradley hit a homer. Then RYNO went yard! Then the studpid rain. But Jody made up for it by slip n and slidin' all over the tarp. I also remember Bill Murray and Harry Caray yelling "RAFFY" during the rain out.

I remember as a 17 year old, crying when I came home from school and learning that Sandberg had retired. To add insult to injury, my family and I had tickets to the Braves / Cubs game just as the strike hit.

I remember feeling like an 8 year old at his first ball game when Ryno un retired!

I remember climbing the grandstand steps and having the aura of Wrigley Field Slap me in the face on 8/8/89. I remember thinking that life just doesn't get any better than being in Wrigley, seeing Ryno hit a homer, and watching the Cubs go into 1st place.

My earliest Cub memories come from the '84 season.

I remember my excitement when, in the summer of 85, my parents told me I get to go see the Cubs (in st louis)!

I remember two of my best friends (as a child) were Steve Stone and Harry Caray --- I spent 144 days a year with them!

- Wood's 20k game. I was in class at Grad School at the time but checked the score online. For whatever reason the 1 hitter is what stuck out to me and I didn't realize the importance of the 20 k's until I got home and watched Sportscenter.

- Brant Brown drop - in my apartment, screaming just as loud as Santo

- Game 163 - again, in my apartment, and I was jumping up and down so hard I'm surprised my downstairs neighbors didn't call the cops. I almost ran to Wrigley to buy playoff tix but didn't.

- Game 6 - Working at Harpo. We were putting together the set for some fashion show or something and the video guys were nice enough to pump the game in to the monitors in the studio but we had no audio. I didn't see the play live, but someone said something about fan interference and we stopped to watch the replay. (I also saw the Pistons/Pacers crowd brawl on a monitor in the video room at Harpo.....missed so many sports moments due to those horrible hours...)

- Nomar trade - I was at my in-laws house for a party and kept finding reasons to slip out and check the internet for Cubs news. I was so freaking thrilled when I read the news that I was SURE it was our year. Dammit.

Brant Brown dropped the fly ball in Milwaukee?

I was in the LF bleachers ... it wasn't the can of corn a lot of people think. He SHOULD have caught it of course but it had a slight hook on it, like a golf drive. That game was totally nuts, probably the craziest I've ever seen, between the Brewers comeback and the HR chase.

> The Cubs had to walk down the left field line to get to the clubhouse?

I can still see Ronnie jumping along the left field line, doing his patented heel-click after a Cub win. :)

> ABC had Monday Night Baseball?

The good ol' days ...

> The 1994 World Series was canceled?

.. and the bad ol' days.

> Harry Caray would call Andre Dawson "Andre Rogers"?

And Lou Boudreau saying "George Hendricks" ... I always maybe he might be a Jimi Hendrix fan b/c he NEVER said George Hendrick.

> Kirby Puckett became the first $3 million player?

> George Foster became the first $2 million player?

Who was the first $1 mil player, Rose?

> Marla Collins was the hottest woman in sports?

"Heyy there she is without her shorts! haha"

Great post, tnx for the memories...

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane...

Forgot completely about them going out there to access the clubhouse, but when I read that, it brought those memories back.

Cincinnati, Saint Louis & Pittsburgh come to mind first as places with those golf carts.

Do you recall Garagiola & Kubeck doing Saturday games?

Seemed like the upper deck was only opened on opening day, and on holiday weekends (e.g. Memorial Day)

Vince and Good Kid were the best.

25 HRs was pretty darn good too.

Sometimes they would finish the game the next time that team was in town for an odd kind of doubleheader.

Those old movie theatre uni's were bizarre, especially on a 90-degree day.

Brant Brown dropped the fly ball in Milwaukee?

I remember my dad taking me to one of my first games. It was Dave Kingman day, Kingman was on Injured Reserve and didn't even have the decency to show up to the park that day (I've hated him every day since).

I have too many memories I don't know where to start.

When I was 10, I would jump on the L at Rosemont, get off at the Addison stop, take a bus and watch a game from the bleechers. All for less than $10.

Ryno was the man, and the 1984 team was awesome. I was in 6th grade and remember every moment of the losses to San Diego. I still hate Steve Garvey to this day.

When game 163 was to be played I jumped in my car and drove to Jewel to get tickets. By the time I got there the line was around the block. I got in line and when I got to the counter I was told that they just sold out. (no lie). I bought two tickets through a scalper for $120 each, one was obstructed view but that game was incredible.

Wood 20K game? How about Jeff Pico's rookie debut of 1 hit shutout ball? Or Fergie coming back. Steve Trout anyone? How about Rick Reuschel? Or the excitement of signing Guzman and then learning that it was the "other" Guzman.

I miss Harry.

My best memory was going to the park with a friend and his dad. His dad knew an usher that got us onto the field after the game. We ran the bases and his dad took a picture of us sliding into home. He still has that picture to this day.

Speaking of Kingman, does anyone remember when he got into a fight with Cub shortstop 5'6" Mick Kelleher?

* Brant Brown dropped the fly ball in Milwaukee?

watching the game at home and having my stomach turn. was it the same day or a few days later when neifi hit the home run against the giants? i remember flipping off the cubs game that day and switching on sportscenter just in time to see the baseball tonight update with neifi's home run going over the fence. i just about pooped my pants in excitement. i was a junior in high school at this time. wow, what a few days!

* The 1994 World Series was canceled?

i barely remember watching the last cubs game of '94. i think they were on a west coast road trip or were about to go on one.

* The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds were in the NL West?

i remember the cubs winning the nl east.

* Shawon Dunston would charge the mound just about everytime he was hit by a pitch?

i just tossed an old vhs tape from '95 where shawon got into someone's face after they slid hard into second base. dunston flipped off the runner's helmet with his hand and everything...i miss shawon and his 300-mph throws to second and first.

*Harry Caray would call Andre Dawson "Andre Rogers"?

i miss harry, period. even when the cubs were atrocious, harry would find some silver lining like this gem:

"hey, the moon's orange! it's gonna be a hot day tomorrow!"

* On 8/8/88 the first night game at Wrigley was rained out?

i watched that with my family way back when. i remember the cubs going slip 'n sliding on the tarp during the rain delay, too.

* 30 homers was considered a "monster" year?

barry larkin won the '95 mvp with numbers close to corey patterson's '03 mid-season numbers. that shows you how much has changed in MLB in 10 years...

* Marla Collins was the hottest woman in sports?

i wonder what she's up to now...

i also remember when frank dipino and mark grace getting into a brawl, being bummed when shawon dunston missed a ton of the season back in the summer of '91, ryno breaking his hand in spring training in '93, ryno retiring for the first time in '94 (one of the papers headlines wrote "another no. 23 hangs it up"), the wild-card fight in '95, the highs and lows of '98, the god-awfulness of the '99 and '00 club, the hope of the 2001 team (roosevelt brown!), hating will clark because of the '89 playoffs and much much more. this team is like a forever pimple on my body...they'll never go away.

Moved back to Illinois to go to grad school. Was working at the Illinois State Geologic Survey analyzing oil well readings. Listening to the FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR.

Cubs up 1 or 2 in the 9th. They bring in Wild Thing. His first game as a cub. Walks the first man.... o.k.... walks the 2nd man... hum.... walks the 3rd man... head in hands now.....

Strikes out the side.

It was that kind of year.

1984-

I was 14 at the time and had already been a long suffering Cub fan.lol I remember how great it was that my dad went out and bought a VCR towards the end of the season so he could capture a bit of history I still have that clinching game in Pittsburgh on tape somewhere. I believe Sutcliffe started, can't remember if he threw a complete game or if it was Lee Smith who recorded the final out. Joe Orsulak made the final out and the Cubs clinched the Eastern Division title, and my dad popped the cork on a bottle of champagne and let us kids have a little sip out of a dixie cup.

I know the upper deck was sometimes closed. When was that approximately?

I'm just curious because the first Cub game I went to, we sat in the upper deck and it was either '78 or '79.

One more memory of days gone by: buying Wrigleys gum instead of bubble gum because it might help the Cubs get some better players!

Game 6 - in my room at home, not really grasping the enormity of what was going on. At the time I was just down that my team had failed to clinch a WS berth, not really realizing that a generation of fans were dying all over again watching the game.

Nomar trade - Watched the game (Saturday game - Clement pitching with trade rumors swirling). Went to work. I'd stated previously that I wasn't willing to give up Clement to get Nomar (I'd still stand by that). Friends came in to see me and tell me that we'd gotten Nomar for Gonzo, Harris and F Beltran. I couldn't concentrate the rest of the evening.

The 84 Cubs were still my greatest memory. I was about 20 and long suffered already.

To answer an earlier question I think Catfish Hunter was the first 1 million a year player.

My first cub game was in, I think, '87. I was sitting in the left field corner surrounded by Phillies fans... the Cubs were down a run or two going into the bottom of the ninth and the Phillie fans were really letting us have it.

Manny Trillo blasted a two out homer to tie the game, and all the out of towners were stunned - some were cussing, some were laughing, the whole spectrum of reactions. The Cubs went on to win the game. Priceless.

you're in McHenry County, aren't you? I was 11th in line at Jewel in Crystal Lake. we were in the car about 2 minutes after Neifi went deep (best damn thing he's ever done for us).

there were cars coming from everywhere speeding to Jewel as we drove. the only reason we were able to get tickets is I jumped out of the car and ran in as soon as we got in the parking lot, then my brother parked. people who parked and then walked in were left out, as were people who didn't have cash in hand.

* Brant Brown dropped the fly ball in Milwaukee?

watching the game at home and having my stomach turn. was it the same day or a few days later when neifi hit the home run against the giants?

If I remember correctly, Neifi's homer was just after the Cubs lost to Houston and everyone thought we were toast. It was in the Astrodome in the series when Terry Mulholland overthrew a little lollipop throw to Mark Grace at first that allowed the Astros to win. I mean it was literally "Cubs lose, they're now a 1/2 game out" to "news from Coors Field: Neifi Perez has hit a homerun to defeat the Giants, the Cubs are back in it!"

we were all consoling each other, then someone clicked over to the national game right as a ball was leaving the yard. I didn't know who hit it, but knew it won the game and forced game 163. two minutes later we were in the car, speeding down the street, weaving through other maniacs just like us.
