  1. I think he had lost some velocity at some point, but he has been solid for two months. At what point does your performance start to count? He has made around 20 appearances with a whip of close to 1... Anyway, I was wondering if he has made some adjustment that may lead to long term success.
  2. Does anyone have any thoughts on him? Does he stick with the team, or was he a flash in the pan? Was there any suggestion of a change in his delivery or approach that made him succeed in his second Cub stint?
  3. 2015 lineup? Fire up the Delorean... Jackson cf Castro ss Baez 3b Rizzo 1b Soler rf FA lf Lake 2b Castillo c
  4. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/history/boxscore.asp?GID=CHN198708020 Two Phillies fans were talking smack bigtime, but Manny Trillo blasted a homer to tie the game and the Cubs won in 10. Everyone in the section roasted those two saps.
  5. Which Cubs still have remaining options - particularly borderline bench players like DeWitt and Maine?
  6. I was going to guess Terry Mulholland. I think he won 10 games in 1999, but they weren't all with the Cubs.
  7. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060607&content_id=1492658&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd Barrett would have been gone after the season: this is the guy they have instead of a draft pick.
  8. A lineup like that can clog a lot of bases.
  9. Hendry expected Maddux and Prior to be guys who throw strikes, it's not like he doesn't grind his teeth when we walk six batters a game. The thing with our youth is that they throw strikes on the farm, but not in the majors. Prior, Hill and Marshall should all develop decent command. Marmol is young, and Guzman is just inconsistent. 2007- 1. Z 2. FREE AGENT 3. PRIOR 4. HILL 5. MARSHALL GUZMAN - PEN MARMOL - AAA The Cubs have so many possibilities to start, I would just sign one solid guy and spend the big money on Soriano.
  10. The Mariners will sign Schmidt, and the Cubs will sign Meche. He has struggled lately, but overall he has been decent. He's young for a free agent - around 27, I think. Padilla from Texas was discussed before, but Texas should ante up to keep him. If they do, how about Adam Eaton?
  11. "Let's also not pretend Mauer hasn't had his share of injuries." "And plays a position that can lead to shortened careers, etc." The position that leads to a shortened career is Cub pitcher.
  12. I would consider Wood as a closer, but only on the cheap. Eyre or Howry are about equal to Dempster, and if the Cubs add a free agent pitcher they might look at someone like Guzman to close. I think Marmol has closer stuff, but he has been doing decently as a starter. By the way, I like Dempster: I just name him as one of the players who might bring a real prospect in return. I wouldn't trade Barrett or ARam.
  13. I wouldn't give Pierre any kind of long term deal, but they should at least offer him arbitration. If he signed for a year, Pie might be ready to replace him. If someone else gives him the long term deal, at least we would get a couple of draft picks and free up money to sign a replacement. Maybe the Cubs could get a power bat for center and stick Pierre's arm in left like the Sox did with Podsednik. I would trade Dempster and someone like Harvey for someone's ready to play prospect.
  14. I live near Detroit, and I was listening to the game on the local radio today. The announcers were raving about Guzman's stuff, especially how the Tigers always seemed off balance. They didn't understand why he wasn't starting, but didn't want to openly criticize Dusty. When Dusty came out to the mound in the seventh, they made the comment "I don't know if Baker is the kind of manager who checks how much fuel a guy has left in his tank." I couldn't help but think he'll take Maddux out after 80 pitches but leave Z in untill he can't lift his arm.
  15. My first cub game was in, I think, '87. I was sitting in the left field corner surrounded by Phillies fans... the Cubs were down a run or two going into the bottom of the ninth and the Phillie fans were really letting us have it. Manny Trillo blasted a two out homer to tie the game, and all the out of towners were stunned - some were cussing, some were laughing, the whole spectrum of reactions. The Cubs went on to win the game. Priceless.
  16. The difference is that Corey still doesn't understand what happened, and Pierre is kicking himself because he knows better.
  17. I managed to miss second base by about ten feet once while trying to stretch a similar situation into a triple. I was staring at the outfielder so hard that I completely lost track of where I was. I stood on third and stared at the ground, hoping no one would notice. No such luck. Of course, I was maybe 13...I don't know what CPatt's excuse is.
  18. Wilkerson leaves game after crashing into wall ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Texas Rangers left fielder Brad Wilkerson left Thursday night's game against Baltimore with a mild concussion after catching a flyball and then crashing hard into the wall. Wilkerson's catch started a strange inning-ending double play in the fifth. Drew Meyer pinch hit for Wilkerson in the bottom of the inning. Nick Markakis hit the ball that Wilkerson tracked down. He slammed so hard into the wall that he knocked a panel out of the out-of-town scoreboard. While Wilkerson sat dazed on the warning track, Corey Patterson never tagged up from first base. Wilkerson managed to throw the ball a few seconds later, getting it to second baseman Mark DeRosa. Patterson was tagged when he stopped a couple of steps shy of second base after wandering between the bases while Wilkerson was down.
  19. Sutcliffe hitting a bomb in the playoffs.
  20. If we could get Wilson for prospects, this is what I had in mind: Pierre Murton Walker Ramirez Wilson Barrett Jones Cedeno I didn't mean to bring up re-considering trading Walker, I was commenting that Wilson would be a good fit now.
  21. If the Cubs deal for Wilson they would probably offer prospects. I've never understood the Walker anti-love, he's a good hitter and has always done anything they ask of him. The only squeak we heard from him was when he thought his position was being given away. Wilson is the kind of guy they might pick up to platoon with JJ if they stay in contention; Lee's injury gives them reason to do it now.
  22. I don't think Walker will be brutal. The knock on him at second has always been his range, not his hands. Mabry will probably play half the time, anyway. Now, about that Craig Wilson trade...
  23. Pierre Murton Walker Ramirez Mabry Barrett Jones Cedeno
  24. Right. The box score on CBS must have been wrong, it showed Carpenter replaced by Suppan before he threw a pitch. Thanks for checking.
  25. I was looking at box scores for games in progress, and I noticed that Suppan is getting pounded instead of Carpenter. Does anyone know what's up?
