Soriano - 2006

Home: .305/.397/.705/1.101

Away: .301/.344/.556/.899

WTF? That doesn't make any sense AT ALL.

By the way, I don't want Soriano on the team.

umm ... point is Soriano's OPS (that would be the last number over there on the right) this year is astounding, given that "RFK" means "Place of Exceedingly Prolific Outs." (Or maybe I missed some sarcasm here ... it was a REALLY long day ... )

Yeah that's what I meant. RFK is incredibly difficult to hit in, how the hell is he doing so well at home!?! That's just sick.

Did you see him single handedly win the game for the Nats last night? Got on against Rivera, stole second, stole third, scored winning run. Oh, and he's almost tied with Pujols for HR lead.

According to Stark, Soriano envisions himself as a 12-14 million dollar a year player. Anyone trading for him would have to pay him that to extend him or it's going to be a rental. This team doesn't need to be acquiring rental property with the way this season is going.

Soriano or Zito would be good guys to trade for now, with the extension being part of the deal. They are both going to be in extremely high demand if they go to free agency, and a trade not only assures that you get him but maybe you can sign him for a little less money than he could potentially get as a free agent.

Soriano will not sign an extension unless it's 12-14 million per year. I just don't see him worth that kind of money. Say no to Alphonso.

So, you are about to hit pay dirt on the free agent market. Your value couldn't be any higher.

Do you?

A. Sign an extension with a team you just got traded to?

B. Let 30 teams attempt to outbid each other?

So, a crappy, poorly run organization like the Cubs has this illusion that they are just 1 good player away from turning things around, so they trade off most of their farm for a guy like Soriano. Keeping in mind the Cubs are one of the most futile organizations in any sport, do you?

A. Sign an extension to play on a team that may never be competitive?

B. Let 30 teams attempt to outbid each other, and choose one of the teams that has the best chance of reaching the World Series some day?

Zito? The dude loves to surf. Expect him to sign with San Diego or LA next year. Trading for him and giving him an extension will require lying to him about the size of the waves on Lake Michigan.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. If people think that Giles was never going to come to the Cubs because he's a "west coast guy", what makes them think Zito is going to come to the Cubs? Sure, he could get traded, but there's no reason to think he'd sign long term. He's a west coast guy...him and Giles should start a club.

He's not going to re-sign with an NL team unless he got a similar deal that Beltran got. And quite frankly, neither player is worth that contract.

Yeah, the problem with this attitude is that just about every superstar player gets overpaid. Is A-Rod worth $25M? Manny Ramirez worth $20M? The Cubs can keep waiting for a superstar who will sign for a lower figure, but they'll probably keep ending up with the Jacque Jones and Juan Pierres of the world manning the outfield.

Rolen could have created one of the biggest bidding wars ever, but he signed with St. Louis right away. The Cubs were attrocious when they traded for White, who was a good young player back then, and he signed before even getting here.

That's right. Bigbad, this contradicts your thoughts on Giles.

There was some sarcasm in my post.

There's nothing preventing us from working out a trade contingent on Soriano signing an extension with the Cubs.

The real problem is that we have little to trade and Soriano will probably not sign an extension with the Cubs because the Cubs are in the National League and he would have to remain an outfielder. There's no harm in asking him, but do we really have anything of value that the Nats would want?

Posted
I'm not a Soriano fan, and would not target him for my ideal team. But I wouldn't mind having him on the Cubs. The problem would be trading for him during a lost season and having him walk this offseason, or risk overpaying heavily to keep him here.

Um, hello, Neifi & Bynum? If Bowden is willing to sign Christian Guzman to a four-year deal, he'd practically hump Hendry's leg for a shot at those two. :)

I am less worried about the overpaying issue, more worried about spending much needed prospects to get him in a season where we our team is synonymous with the Pirates and Royals.

This is what I think the lineup would be next year if we got him:

CF Pie

SS Cedeno

2B Soriano

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Jones

C Barrett

LF Murton/platoon

Pitcher

I've got no interest in seeing Pie in the leadoff spot next year. I'd rather have Walker leadoff and play 2nd, play Soriano in LF and platoon Murton with Jones in RF.

Pie is NOT ready for next year. I'd have him spend most of '07 in AAA.

Agreed. We need someone like Kenny Lofton there to bridge the gap. Maybe not necessarily Kenny, but someone like him who could come in on a 1-year deal and produce. I don't like the idea of adding Soriano when players like Abreu or Cabrera could be available. I'd rather trade some talent for either of those 2 than to take a gamble that Soriano can repeat the first half he's having.

When's he going to be ready then? He's already getting a full year in AAA. He needs to learn to be more selective, but he's had a lot of success as a hacker, and he's in the wrong organization to get a better eye.

Agreed.

Walker 2B

Lee 1B

Soriano LF

Ramirez 3B

Barrett C

Jones/Murton LF

Pie CF (IF you think he's ready to be called up)

Note: I'm not advocating trading for Soriano.

Lee would have 35 Hr's and 50 RBI in that lineup.

Darnit, I finally remembered what Stoney said on the radio yesterday. Someone asked if he saw Kenny Williams going after Soriano, and long story short, Stoney said Soriano is a leadoff man and not a middle of the order guy.

He's on pace for 54 HRs, Stoney!

Pie-How long does this guy need in AAA?

Lineup-I'd be shocked if the Cubs resigned Walker. Maybe you know something I don't, but I just don't see that happening.

Does anyone have some park adjusted type stats for Soriano? RFK being such a pitcher's park, I find it impressive he is doing so well at home.
